Abstract
BACKGROUND Spending time away from bed is important in older adults. Not doing so can lead to functional decline rapidly. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between oral function and time spent away from bed in older adults living in nursing homes. METHODS We enrolled 748 adults aged ≥65 years across eight nursing homes between April 2022 and March 2023. 'Problems with oral hygiene' and 'problems with oral function' were the dependent variables in the multiple regression analyses to determine their association with time spent away from bed. RESULTS We selected 304 participants (76 men; mean age, 86.3 ± 7.5 years) and divided them into three groups: group S (< 4 h), group M (4 to < 6 h) and group L (≥ 6 h), with 28, 23 and 253 participants, respectively. Comparison of the characteristics between the groups demonstrated significant differences in the Barthel index (p < .001), time spent away from bed (p < .001), history of aspiration pneumonia (p < .001), confirmation of meals and food forms (p = .010), problems with oral hygiene (p = .014), and problems with oral function (p = .002). Based on multiple regression analyses, 'problems with oral hygiene' (p < .001) and 'problems with oral function' (p < .001) were significantly associated with time spent away from bed. CONCLUSIONS The time spent away from bed was significantly associated with both oral hygiene and function in older adults, suggesting the importance of extending the time that older adults spend away from bed.

Abstract
Removing dental plaque by using a toothbrush is the most important measure for oral hygiene. The aim of the present study was to estimate the impact of the coordination skills of children and adolescents on their oral health (plaque level, DMF/T: decayed, missing, filled teeth). Within a prospective cohort study, 996 children (10 to 18 years) were examined. The results of three coordination tests from the Motorik Modul (MoMo) were included to evaluate the coordination skills. Other parameters taken into account were age, sex, orthodontic treatment and socioeconomic status (SES). Univariate and various multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate relationships. Better results in precision coordination tests were significantly related to a better oral hygiene (backward balancing: logistic regression OR 0.86, 95%CI: 0.73−0.99, p = 0.051, proportional odds model OR 0.86, 95%CI: 0.75−0.99, p = 0.037; one-leg-stand: logistic regression OR 0.78, 95%CI: 0.63−0.96, p = 0.018, proportional odds model OR 0.77, 95%CI: 0.64−0.92, p = 0.003). Higher scores on one-leg-stand were significantly related to a lower caries prevalence (logistic regression OR 0.81, 95%CI: 0.66−0.99, p = 0.037; Poisson regression exp(ß) 0.82, 95%CI: 0.74−0.91, p < 0.001). Coordination test under a time constraint (jumping side-to-side) showed no significant relation. Oral hygiene was poorer in younger children, boys and low SES. Caries prevalence increased with low SES and increasing age. The present results suggest that oral health is influenced by coordinative skills.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Mozart's music on the learning of toothbrushing behavior in children with high and low dental anxiety levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS A randomized, controlled, single-blinded, and observational study was conducted with 60 children, aged 8-12, who were recruited to high dental anxiety level (HDAL) and low dental anxiety level (LDAL) groups. Both groups were divided into two equal subgroups (with or without Mozart's music). In the Mozart's music subgroups, children were exposed to Mozart's Sonata for 7 min and toothbrushing training was given accompanied by music. The training was instructed to the second subgroup without listening to Mozart's music. The periodontal measurements were repeated after 15 days. Three-factor variance analysis was used to analyze the data. RESULTS There was a statistically significant decrease in plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) scores in the follow-up visits for all groups (p < 0.05). A statistically significant decrease was found in PI values between groups with or without music in those with HDAL (p < 0.001). However, no statistically significant differences were found between groups with or without music in those with LDAL (p = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS Listening to Mozart's music before toothbrushing training had a significant effect on plaque removal in children with high dental anxiety, while Mozart's music did not have a positive effect in the group with low dental anxiety. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of Mozart's music may be beneficial in oral hygiene education for children with high dental anxiety levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fixed orthodontic appliances impair oral hygiene increasing the risk of non-cavitated lesions (NCLs) and tooth decay. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of fluoride and xylitol varnishes in preventing NCLs during comprehensive orthodontic treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample comprised 55 volunteers from 15 to 20 years of age under orthodontic treatment that were randomly divided into three groups: Fluoride Group (FG; n=17), Xylitol Group (XG; n=19), and Placebo Group (PG; n=19). The patients in each group received two applications of the following varnishes: DuraphatTM (5% NaF), 20% xylitol, and placebo (no F/Xylitol) in the three groups, respectively. The varnishes were applied in the first appointment (T0) and 3 months later (T1). Clinical examinations were carried out at T0 and 6 months after (T2) using the ICDAS index and the QLF system (fluorescence difference). The intergroup comparisons were performed by ANOVA/Tukey's or Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn's tests (P<0.05). RESULTS There was no significant intergroup difference regarding ICDAS index changes from T0 to T2. Fluoride varnish produced significantly greater increase in fluorescence of NCLs (mean change of -0.65 +0.78 and -0.56 +0.83, for maxilla and mandible, respectively) in comparison to the other groups. The majority of non-cavitated lesions improved in the fluoride and xylitol varnish groups. CONCLUSIONS Fluoride varnish produced significantly greater increase in enamel fluorescence compared to xylitol and placebo varnishes. In short term, both fluoride and xylitol varnishes produced remineralization of NCLs in orthodontic patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Non-cavitated lesions can be effectively controlled in high-risk orthodontic patients by means of fluoride varnishes. Abstract
Video observation (VO) is an established tool for observing toothbrushing behaviour, however, it is a subjective method requiring thorough calibration and training, and the toothbrush position is not always clearly visible. As automated tracking of motions may overcome these disadvantages, the study aimed to compare observational data of habitual toothbrushing as well as of post-instruction toothbrushing obtained from motion tracking (MT) to observational data obtained from VO. One-hundred-three subjects (37.4±14.7 years) were included and brushed their teeth with a manual (MB; n = 51) or a powered toothbrush (PB; n = 52) while being simultaneously video-filmed and tracked. Forty-six subjects were then instructed how to brush their teeth systematically and were filmed/tracked for a second time. Videos were analysed with INTERACT (Mangold, Germany); parameters of interest were toothbrush position, brushing time, changes between areas (events) and the Toothbrushing Systematic Index (TSI). Overall, the median proportion (min; max) of identically classified toothbrush positions (both sextant/surface correct) in a brushing session was 87.8% (50.0; 96.9), which was slightly higher for MB compared to PB (90.3 (50.0; 96.9) vs 86.5 (63.7; 96.5) resp.; p = 0.005). The number of events obtained from MT was higher than from VO (p < 0.001) with a moderate to high correlation between them (MB: ρ = 0.52, p < 0.001; PB: ρ = 0.87; p < 0.001). After instruction, both methods revealed a significant increase of the TSI regardless of the toothbrush type (p < 0.001 each). Motion tracking is a suitable tool for observing toothbrushing behaviour, is able to measure improvements after instruction, and can be used with both manual and powered toothbrushes.

Abstract
There has been a call for evidence-based oral healthcare guidelines, to improve precision dentistry and oral healthcare delivery. The main challenges to this goal are the current lack of up-to-date evidence, the limited integrative analytical data sets, and the slow translations to routine care delivery. Overcoming these issues requires knowledge discovery pipelines based on big data and health analytics, intelligent integrative informatics approaches, and learning health systems. This article examines how this can be accomplished by utilizing big data. These data can be gathered from four major streams: patients, clinical data, biological data, and normative data sets. All these must then be uniformly combined for analysis and modelling and the meaningful findings can be implemented clinically. By executing data capture cycles and integrating the subsequent findings, practitioners are able to improve public oral health and care delivery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional range of motion is defined as the required range of motions for individuals to maintain maximal independence, along with optimal conditions for activities of daily living. Intervention plans for rehabilitation are directed towards the acquisition of anatomical range of motion. However, this isn't always possible based on person's etiology, prognosis, or severity of disease. RESEARCH QUESTION The aim of this study is to determine functional range of motion during different unilateral, bilateral symmetrical and bimanual asymmetrical tasks of activities of daily living. METHODS Participants completed nine basic activities of daily living (hand to head, hanging jacket, eating, wallet placement to back pocket, washing hands and face, removing belt, water pouring, brushing teeth) linked according to International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, while joint kinematics of the trunk and upper extremity were recorded with inertial measurement units. Peak values of mean joint angles were determined for each activities of daily living. MVN BIOMECH Awinda MTW2-3A7G6 sensors (Xsens Technologies B.V. Enschede, Netherlands) were used for 3D kinematic analysis of activities. RESULTS Forty-six healthy subjects (right-dominant) were included in this study. Range of motion requirements of all activities were defined 37.85° extension, 91.18° flexion, 1.25° adduction, 39.45° abduction, 63.6° internal rotation, 21.8° external rotation in the dominant shoulder, 124.17° flexion in the dominant elbow, 40.29° extension, 23.66° flexion, 18.31° supination, 12.56° pronation, 18.27 ulnar deviation and, 18.36° radial deviation in the dominant wrist. Maximum trunk range of motions were found to be 29.75° flexion in C7-T1, 10.74° flexion in T12-L1, and 24.16° flexion in L5-S1. SIGNIFICANCE It is thought that the results of this research will contribute to the determination of normative data needed for surgical interventions, technological rehabilitation devices and task-spesific rehabilitation programs which based patient's motor skill level.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effects of the Bass brushing method on dental plaque and pneumonia in older adults hospitalized with pneumonia after discharge. BACKGROUND Poor oral hygiene may lead to pneumonia. Complications of pneumonia in older adults can be life-threatening during hospitalization and after discharge. METHODS Older adults hospitalized with pneumonia (n = 30) were randomly assigned to intervention (with the Bass brushing method; n = 15) or control (with usual care; n = 15) groups. Dental plaque index and pneumonia as detected on chest x-rays were evaluated prior to the intervention (baseline) and every month for six months after discharge. RESULTS Participants in the intervention group experienced a sustained reduction in dental plaque from the fourth to the sixth months (p = .024; p = .025; p = .000, respectively) that was not found in the control group. There were no group differences in detected pneumonia throughout the follow-up period. Pneumonia as detected on the chest x-rays at baseline (p = .001) and dental plaque index (p = .021) were significant predictors of the risk of pneumonia across groups. CONCLUSIONS The Bass brushing method is a simple and effective oral hygiene practice that reduces dental plaque in older adults hospitalized with pneumonia after discharge.

Manual dexterity and dental biofilm accumulation in independent older adults without hand disabilities: A cross-sectional study. Photodiagnosis Photodyn Ther 2019; 25:74-83. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effect of differential learning of toothbrushing compared to habitual toothbrushing and instruction/demonstration of toothbrushing on plaque reduction and gingival inflammation of primary school children. METHODS Children (6-9 years) were subjected to a toothbrushing training consisting of 15 days (3 × 5 days, interval 2 days, 3 min/day) and randomly assigned to one of three groups (each n = 18): habitual toothbrushing/control, instruction/demonstration of toothbrushing, differential learning of toothbrushing. The differential learning approach comprised 15 different movement exercises (1/day), while instruction/demonstration of toothbrushing was based on repetitive practice of toothbrushing. Plaque (Turesky-modified Quigley-Hein plaque index (T-QHI)) and papilla bleeding (papilla bleeding index (PBI)) scores were assessed prior to the first toothbrushing (t0, baseline) and 21 (t1), 42 (t2) and 63 (t3) days after beginning of the study. Primary statistical analyses were performed with cumulative logit regression models with repeated measures. The global significance level was set to 5% two-sided. RESULTS At all time points, PBI and T-QHI were significantly reduced by differential learning compared to instruction/demonstration of toothbrushing and habitual toothbrushing. Compared to baseline, differential learning improved PBI and T-QHI significantly at all time points. In the other groups, no significant reduction of PBI compared to baseline was observed. T-QHI was significantly reduced by habitual toothbrushing only at t1 and by instruction/demonstration of toothbrushing at t1 and t2. Differential learning had an improved effect on posterior compared to anterior teeth. CONCLUSION Differential learning of toothbrushing improved plaque reduction and reduced gingival inflammation compared to habitual toothbrushing and instruction/demonstration of toothbrushing in 6- to 9-year-old children in mixed dentition.
