A deep insight into the polystyrene chain in cyclohexane at theta temperature: molecular dynamics simulation and quantum chemical calculations

A Comprehensive Study on the Effect of Highly Thermally Conductive Fillers on Improving the Properties of SBR/BR-Filled Nano-Silicon Nitride

The effect of silicon nitride (Si3N4) as a thermally conductive material on the mechanical, microstructural, and physical properties as well as kinetics of the curing reaction of styrene-butadiene rubber/butadiene rubber (SBR/BR) was investigated in this work. The results showed an improvement in tensile, hardness, and compression features of the composite due to the presence of Si3N4. The properties were enhanced with the filler loading content; somehow, the composite including Si3N4 = 6 parts per hundred (phr) had the most significant performance, an increase of ∼15 and 20% in the maximum strain and toughness of the composite, respectively, an increase of almost 7% in the hardness, and an ∼13% reduction in the compression set. Also, the filler led to an increase in the crosslink density (calculated via the Flory-Rehner equation using swelling test) by 7.12 × 10-5 mol/g, proving the increment of the covalent bonds between the polymer chains during the curing reaction. The kinetic consideration revealed a reduction in the scorch and optimum curing times by ∼40 and ∼25%, respectively. In order to describe the kinetics of curing reaction of SBR/BR-Si3N4, an autocatalytic model based on the Kamal-Sourour model was applied on the rheometry results. The calculated kinetic parameters indicated that the thermally conductive Si3N4 accelerated the curing reaction by ∼40%, particularly at Si3N4 = 6 phr. After 6 phr of Si3N4, agglomeration of the filler particles decreased its performance.

Improvement of XYL10C_∆N catalytic performance through loop engineering for lignocellulosic biomass utilization in feed and fuel industries

BACKGROUND

Xylanase, an important accessory enzyme that acts in synergy with cellulase, is widely used to degrade lignocellulosic biomass. Thermostable enzymes with good catalytic activity at lower temperatures have great potential for future applications in the feed and fuel industries, which have distinct demands; however, the potential of the enzymes is yet to be researched.

RESULTS

In this study, a structure-based semi-rational design strategy was applied to enhance the low-temperature catalytic performance of Bispora sp. MEY-1 XYL10C_∆N wild-type (WT). Screening and comparisons were performed for the WT and mutant strains. Compared to the WT, the mutant M53S/F54L/N207G exhibited higher specific activity (2.9-fold; 2090 vs. 710 U/mg) and catalytic efficiency (2.8-fold; 1530 vs. 550 mL/s mg) at 40 °C, and also showed higher thermostability (the melting temperature and temperature of 50% activity loss after 30 min treatment increased by 7.7 °C and 3.5 °C, respectively). Compared with the cellulase-only treatment, combined treatment with M53S/F54L/N207G and cellulase increased the reducing sugar contents from corn stalk, wheat bran, and corn cob by 1.6-, 1.2-, and 1.4-folds, with 1.9, 1.2, and 1.6 as the highest degrees of synergy, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides useful insights into the underlying mechanism and methods of xylanase modification for industrial utilization. We identified loop2 as a key functional area affecting the low-temperature catalytic efficiency of GH10 xylanase. The thermostable mutant M53S/F54L/N207G was selected for the highest low-temperature catalytic efficiency and reducing sugar yield in synergy with cellulase in the degradation of different types of lignocellulosic biomass.

Dissolution and conformational behavior of functionalized cellulose chains in the bulk, aqueous and non-aqueous media: A simulation study

In the present study, we employ all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the dynamic behaviors and structural properties of the native and modified cellulose chains in the bulk, aqueous, and organic media. Particular attention has been directed to the role of different hydrophobic and hydrophilic functional groups as linear and branched aliphatic and also cyclic pendent groups on the solubility and packing of the cellulose chain. The various properties related to density profile, mean squared displacement, intramolecular entropy, radius of gyration, and radial distribution function were calculated. The results showed that the chain tendency toward crystallinity decreased when the native cellulose chains were modified using functional groups. This issue is supported by the fact that modifying the chains decreases the compactness of the cellulose chains due to partial solubility increasing of the modified chains, especially for the chains functionalized by polyether groups. The present computational data highlights the crucial role of the functional groups with the hydrophilic nature and linear molecular architecture to reduce the cellulose chains compactness in both aqueous and organic media when compared with the other types of functional groups.

Molecular dynamics simulation of polystyrene copolymer with octyl short-chain branches in toluene

In this study, dimensional, conformational and dynamic behaviors of a short-chain branched styrene/1-octene copolymer chain with different 1-octene percentages, i.e., 0, 2, 4 and 6%, in toluene are investigated at the temperature of 298.15 K via molecular dynamics simulation. The chain dimensions and flexibility in the solvent are evaluated by calculating the radius of gyration (R_g), end-to-end distance (<r₀>), surface area (A_ch), and volume (V_ch) of the copolymer chain. The mean square displacement (MSD) and diffusivity coefficient for each copolymer chain are measured to determine its dynamic behavior and mobility in aromatic media. To consider the effect of increasing the 1-octene co-monomer percentage on the copolymer chain affinity to the solvent molecules, the interaction energy (E_int) and Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter are calculated for each equilibrated solution model. The simulation results indicate that the co-monomer level increment in the copolymer structure reduces the chain R_g amount and its interaction with the solvent. The <r₀> of the chain increases up to 4% co-monomer content, while further co-monomer content decreases the <r₀> value. Additionally, the viscosity of the equilibrated dilute solutions is calculated via non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation (NEMD). Moreover, the steric hindrance of the copolymers and the solvent molecules capturing in the dilute solution is determined via radial distribution function (RDF) analysis. Helmholtz free energy and the system entropy changes are calculated to evaluate the tendency of the copolymer to the solvent molecules and its dilute solution irregularity, respectively.
