Recent Advances of Food Hazard Detection Based on Artificial Nanochannel Sensors

Food quality and safety are related to the health and safety of people, and food hazards are important influencing factors affecting food safety. It is strongly necessary to develop food safety rapid detection technology to ensure food safety. As a new detection technology, artificial nanochannel-based electrochemical and other methods have the advantages of being real-time, simple, and sensitive and are widely used in the detection of food hazards. In this paper, we review artificial nanochannel sensors as a new detection technology in food safety for different types of food hazards: biological hazards (bacteria, toxins, viruses) and chemical hazards (heavy metals, organic pollutants, food additives). At the same time, we critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of artificial nanochannel sensor detection, as well as the restrictions and solutions of detection, and finally look forward to the challenges and development prospects of food safety detection technology based on the limitations of artificial nanochannel detection. We expect to provide a theoretical basis and inspiration for the development of rapid real-time detection technology for food hazards and the production of portable detection equipment in the future.

Water purification modeling by functionalized hourglass-shape multilayer nano-channel

In this study, inspired by the overall structure and operation of the aquaporin channel, graphene-based nanochannels are proposed to be used as potential membranes for the water purification process. To this end, an hourglass-shaped channel has been designed using the three-layer porous graphene sheets and the effects of some main channel's elements, such as the channel bending angle and attached functional groups to it, on the filtration performance have been examined by using molecular dynamics simulations. We find that a suitable bending channel shape can improve the channel efficiency, i.e. both the water permeability and the ion rejection rate of the suitable bent channels were more than for the straight channels. In addition, regarding the different functionalized channels, the half-functionalized channels were more efficient than the completed functionalized ones. Furthermore, by monitoring the dynamics of water molecules as they pass through the narrowest part of the channels, it was found that water molecule rotation assists water transport.

Modeling the influence of the external electric fields on water viscosity inside carbon nanotubes

Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were performed to explore the effects of external electric fields and confinement on water properties inside various carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Using different GHz electric field frequencies as well as various constant electric field strengths, the radial distribution function and density profile were investigated, by which the impact of the electric fields and confinement on the water structure are revealed. The results indicated water molecules inside the CNT form layered structures due to topological confinement applying external electric fields can disturb this ordered water molecules structure and increase the viscosity of confined water, particularly in the case of CNTs with a radius less than 13.5 Å. Conversely, for CNTs with a radius greater than13.5 Å, the viscosity decreases under the influence of external oscillating or constant electric fields. How dose the synergism of confinement and external electric fields affect the water properties inside the CNTs?

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics study of human aquaporin-2 in the static external electric fields

In this paper, non-equilibrium MD simulations (NEMD) of human aquaporin-2 (AQP2) in the presence of an external static electric field have been performed along + z and - z directions of the pore axis. The impacts of the electric field direction on the gating mechanism corresponding to the selectivity filter (SF) region of AQP2 have been studied. Besides, the effects of applied external electric field on the PMF profile of water molecules translocation, water permeability, and molecules dipole orientation are investigated. Our results showed that when the external electric field is implemented along the + z direction of the channels, the selectivity filter region is kept in the wide conformation for the majority of the time. Therefore, a remarkable increase in the overall water permeability can be seen compared to the case without any external electric field. This is in contrast to the effects of - z-directed electric field on the conformations of the selectivity filter, which induces mostly narrow conformations in this constriction region. A substantial higher energy barrier emerged in the middle of the AQP2's pores under the effect of -z-directed electric field in comparison with the zero and + z-directed electric field strengths, which is mainly ascribed to the deviation from bipolar dipole orientation within the AQP2's pores.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Nano-biotechnology, an applicable approach for sustainable future

Nanotechnology is one of the most emerging fields of research within recent decades and is based upon the exploitation of nano-sized materials (e.g., nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanomembranes, nanowires, nanofibers and so on) in various operational fields. Nanomaterials have multiple advantages, including high stability, target selectivity, and plasticity. Diverse biotic (e.g., Capsid of viruses and algae) and abiotic (e.g., Carbon, silver, gold and etc.) materials can be utilized in the synthesis process of nanomaterials. "Nanobiotechnology" is the combination of nanotechnology and biotechnology disciplines. Nano-based approaches are developed to improve the traditional biotechnological methods and overcome their limitations, such as the side effects caused by conventional therapies. Several studies have reported that nanobiotechnology has remarkably enhanced the efficiency of various techniques, including drug delivery, water and soil remediation, and enzymatic processes. In this review, techniques that benefit the most from nano-biotechnological approaches, are categorized into four major fields: medical, industrial, agricultural, and environmental.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Ion Drift in Nanochannel Water Flow

The present paper employs Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to reveal nanoscale ion separation from water/ion flows under an external electric field in Poiseuille-like nanochannels. Ions are drifted to the sidewalls due to the effect of wall-normal applied electric fields while flowing inside the channel. Fresh water is obtained from the channel centerline, while ions are rejected near the walls, similar to the Capacitive DeIonization (CDI) principles. Parameters affecting the separation process, i.e., simulation duration, percentage of the removal, volumetric flow rate, and the length of the nanochannel incorporated, are affected by the electric field magnitude, ion correlations, and channel height. For the range of channels investigated here, an ion removal percentage near 100% is achieved in most cases in less than 20 ns for an electric field magnitude of E = 2.0 V/Å. In the nutshell, the ion drift is found satisfactory in the proposed nanoscale method, and it is exploited in a practical, small-scale system. Theoretical investigation from this work can be projected for systems at larger scales to perform fundamental yet elusive studies on water/ion separation issues at the nanoscale and, one step further, for designing real devices as well. The advantages over existing methods refer to the ease of implementation, low cost, and energy consumption, without the need to confront membrane fouling problems and complex electrode material fabrication employed in CDI.

Water distillation modeling by disjoint CNT-based channels under the influence of external electric fields

Using molecular dynamics method, the ion rejection and water flow inside flexible disjoint carbon-based channels were examined in the presence of electric fields. The effects of the carbon nanotube diameters and field magnitude on the nano-channel efficiency were investigated. It was observed that water flow through the filter was modified by increasing the radius of nanotubes, while the salt rejection was reduced. The particles' behaviors inside the channel were described in view of Van der Waals interactions between the water molecules, ions, and carbon atoms. Furthermore, the results indicated that the ion rejection and water flow were increased under the application of proper magnitude of electric fields. Graphical abstract Using MD simulation method, a disjoint CNT-based filter was designed to produce freshwater from a NaCl solution by the aid of external electric field. It was observed that the filter operation was significantly affected by channel structural parameters and amount of applied electric fields.
