Computational study of the intermolecular interactions and their effect on the UV-visible spectra of the ternary liquid mixture of benzene, ethanol and propylene glycol

Influence of the substitution of different functional groups on the gas sensing and light harvesting efficiency of zero-dimensional coronene quantum dot: A first principle DFT study

The present study accounts for the structural and electronic properties of a zero-dimensional coronene quantum dot (QD) and its substituted structures with seven different functional groups. The substitution of functional groups lead to the alteration of the centrosymmetric geometry of the coronene flake and thus, incredible properties were observed for the functionalized QDs. The increment in the band gap after the substitution of the functional groups was responsible for the increase in the chemical stability. The cohesive energy however decreased for the functional QDs. Fourier transform Infrared spectra were traced for all the QDs to confirm the availability of the functional groups and their participation in the chemical reactivity. After the substitution of functional groups, the extremely enhanced light harvesting efficiency of functionalized QDs was obtained. Furthermore, the sensing capability of the functionalized QDs for CO, CO2, and NH3 was also calculated and it was found that C-cyano, C-nitro, C-nitroso, C-pyrrolidine, and C-thionyl QDs have better sensing capabilities for CO2 molecules. C-pyrrolidine had the highest value of light harvesting efficiency of about 96%. This reflects the potential photosensitive candidature of C-pyrrolidine. Therefore, the present study sets a perfect benchmark for designing and fabricating efficient photosensitive materials and gas-sensing devices using the introduced QDs in the near future.

Uptake of Hydrogen Bonding Molecules by Benzene Nanoparticles

The uptake of molecules on nanometer-size clusters of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is important for the condensation of water on PAH aerosols in the atmosphere and for ice mantle growth on nanoparticles in the interstellar medium. We generate benzene clusters Bz_N of mean size N̅ ≈ 300 (radius R̅ ≈ 2.2 Å) as a model system for the PAH nanoparticles. Using molecular beams and mass spectrometry detection, we investigate the uptake of water, methanol, and ethanol by these clusters. All picked up molecules are highly mobile on Bz_N and generate clusters within <3 ms. The relative uptakes for the different investigated molecules can be directly compared and quantified. Water molecules exhibit the lowest relative pickup probability that is ∼30% lower than those for methanol and ethanol, which are approximately the same.

Surface-Radical Mobility Test by Self-Sorted Recombination: Symmetrical Product upon Recombination (SPR)

We describe here a study of the mobility of the alkoxy radical on a surface by detection of its recombination product. A novel method called symmetrical product recombination (SRP) uses an unsymmetrical peroxide that upon sensitized homolysis recombines to a symmetrical product [R'OOR → R'O^•↑ + ^•OR → ROOR]. This allows for self-sorting of the radical to enhance the recombination path to a symmetrical product, which has been used to deduce surface migratory aptitude. SPR also provides a new opportunity for mechanistic studies of interfacial radicals, including monitoring competition between radical recombination versus surface hydrogen abstraction. This is an approach that might work for other surface-borne radicals on natural and artificial particles.
