Sol-gel derived Li+-doped poly(ε-caprolactone)/siloxane biohybrid electrolytes

Preparation of Gellan Gum-Inorganic Composite Film and Its Metal Ion Accumulation Property

Gellan gum is one of the water-soluble anionic polysaccharides produced by the bacteria Sphingomonas elodea. In this study, we prepared gellan gum-inorganic composite films by mixing the gellan gum and a silane coupling reagent—3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). These gellan gum-GPTMS composite films were stable in an aqueous solution and showed a thermal stability. In addition, these composite films indicated a mechanical strength by the formation of the three-dimensional network of siloxane. We demonstrated the accumulation of metal ions from a metal ion-containing aqueous solution by the composite film. As a result, although the composite film indicated the accumulation of heavy and rare-earth metal ions, the light metal ions, such as Mg(II) and Al(III) ions, did not interact with the composite material. Therefore, the accumulative mechanism of metal ions using a composite film was evaluated by IR measurements. As a consequence, although the accumulation of heavy and rare-earth metal ions occurred at both the −COO− group and the −OH group in the gellan gum, the accumulation of light metal ions occurred only at the −OH group.

Luminescent Electrochromic Devices for Smart Windows of Energy-Efficient Buildings

To address the challenges of the next generation of smart windows for energy-efficient buildings, new electrochromic devices (ECDs) are introduced. These include indium molybdenum oxide (IMO), a conducting oxide transparent in the near-infrared (NIR) region, and a NIR-emitting electrolyte. The novel electrolytes are based on a sol-gel-derived di-urethane cross-linked siloxane-based host structure, including short chains of poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL(530) (where 530 represents the average molecular weight in g mol−1). This hybrid framework was doped with a combination of either, lithium triflate (LiTrif) and erbium triflate (ErTrif3), or LiTrif and bisaquatris (thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) erbium (III) ([Er(tta)3(H2O)2]). The ECD@LiTrif-[Er(tta)3(H2O)2] device presents a typical Er3+ NIR emission around 1550 nm. The figures of merit of these devices are high cycling stability, good reversibility, and unusually high coloration efficiency (CE = ΔOD/ΔQ, where Q is the inserted/de-inserted charge density). CE values of −8824/+6569 cm2 C−1 and −8243/+5200 cm2 C−1 were achieved at 555 nm on the 400th cycle, for ECD@LiTrif-ErTrif3 and ECD@LiTrif-[Er(tta)3(H2O)2], respectively.

Li(+)- and Eu(³+)-doped poly(ε-caprolactone)/siloxane biohybrid electrolytes for electrochromic devices

The sol-gel process has been successfully combined with the "mixed cation" effect to produce novel luminescent and ion conducting biohybrids composed of a diurethane cross-linked poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL530)/siloxane hybrid network (PCL stands for the poly(ε-caprolactone) biopolymer and 530 is the average molecular weight in gmol(-1)) doped with a wide range of concentrations of lithium and europium triflates (LiCF(3)SO(3) and Eu(CF(3)SO(3))(3), respectively) (molar ratio of ca. 50:50). The hybrid samples are all semicrystalline: whereas at n = 52.6 and 27.0 (n, composition, corresponds to the number of (C(═O)(CH(2))(5)O) repeat units of PCL(530) per mixture of Li(+) and Eu(3+) ions) a minor proportion of crystalline PCL(530) chains is present, at n = 6.1, a new crystalline phase emerges. The latter electrolyte is thermally stable up to 220 °C and exhibits the highest conductivity over the entire range of temperatures studied (3.7 × 10(-7) and 1.71 × 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 20 and 102 °C, respectively). According to infrared spectroscopic data, major modifications occur in terms of hydrogen bonding interactions at this composition. The electrochemical stability domain of the biohybrid sample with n = 27 spans more than 7 V versus Li/Li(+). This sample is a room temperature white light emitter. Its emission color can be easily tuned across the Commission Internationale d'Éclairage (CIE) chromaticity diagram upon simply changing the excitation wavelength. Preliminary tests performed with a prototype electrochromic device (ECD) comprising the sample with n = 6.1 as electrolyte and WO(3) as cathodically coloring layer are extremely encouraging. The device exhibits switching time around 50 s, an optical density change of 0.15, good open circuit memory under atmospheric conditions (ca. 1 month) and high coloration efficiency (577 cm(2) C(-1) in the second cycle).
