Abstract
A micro-electrochemical reaction cell was coupled to an electrospray mass spectrometer in order to track redox transformations for two representative medicinal gold compounds - i.e. [(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-1-thio-β-D-glucopyranosato-S)(triethylphosphine)gold(I)] and [Au(bipydmb-H)(OH)][PF6] (where bipydmb-H is deprotonated 6-(1,1-dimethylbenzyl)-2,2'-bipyridine), known as Auranofin and Aubipyc respectively - in parallel to square wave voltammetry (SWV) measurements. Irreversible oxidation of thio-glucose tetraacetate was the dominant reaction for the gold(I) compound Auranofin; oxidation was accompanied by hydrolysis leading to progressive deacetylation. Two main active forms were identified for this prodrug: the triethylphosphinegold(I) cation and a gold(I) thioglucose species, with a variable number of acetyl groups. For the gold(III) complex Aubipyc irreversible reduction of the gold(III) center was highlighted, accompanied by a ligand exchange process. The free gold(I) ion is proposed to be the final species that subsequently binds transport proteins in the bloodstream. Molecule specific mass spectrometry determinations provide complementary data to square wave voltammetry helping to understand the nature of the electrochemical conversions of complex or unstable compounds. Finally, it was possible to establish that oxidizing conditions during drug preparation and administration should be avoided in the case of Auranofin; conversely, reduction conditions typical for the blood or the cytosol environment are suitable to obtain the active gold(I) species from the gold(III) complex Aubipyc.

Abstract
Recent progress in the theory and practice of voltammetry is surveyed and evaluated. The transformation over the last decade of the level of modelling and simulation of experiments has realised major advances such that electrochemical techniques can be fully developed and applied to real chemical problems of distinct complexity. This review focuses on the topic areas of: multistep electrochemical processes, voltammetry in ionic liquids, the development and interpretation of theories of electron transfer (Butler-Volmer and Marcus-Hush), advances in voltammetric pulse techniques, stochastic random walk models of diffusion, the influence of migration under conditions of low support, voltammetry at rough and porous electrodes, and nanoparticle electrochemistry. The review of the latter field encompasses both the study of nanoparticle-modified electrodes, including stripping voltammetry and the new technique of 'nano-impacts'.

Abstract
The influence of the potential pulse height of square-wave voltammetry (SWV) (i.e., the SW amplitude) is studied for a variety of quasireversible electrode mechanisms, including a simple solution-phase electrode reaction at a planar or spherical electrode, a solution phase electrode reaction coupled with a reversible follow-up chemical reaction, and a diffusionless surface confined electrode reaction. The electrode kinetics of all the electrode mechanisms depends critically on the SW amplitude, and the quasireversible kinetic region is a function of both frequency-related electrode kinetic parameters and the SW amplitude. Thus, a novel methodology for electrode kinetics measurements is proposed by altering the SW amplitude only, at a fixed frequency of the SW potential modulation, that is, at a constant scan rate of the voltammetric experiment. Electrode kinetic measurements at a constant SW frequency are of exceptional importance especially when complex electrode mechanisms are studied, which depend on several frequency-related kinetic parameters. The electrode kinetic measurements are based on a novel feature termed the "amplitude-based quasireversible maximum", manifested as a parabolic dependence of the amplitude-normalized net SW peak current versus the SW amplitude. The position of the amplitude-based quasireversible maximum depends on the standard rate constant of the electrode reaction, enabling estimation of this important kinetic parameter in a simple and fast procedure. The novel quasireversible maximum is attributed to all studied electrode mechanisms, implying that it is a general feature of most electrode mechanisms under conditions of SWV.

Abstract
Thermodynamically unstable intermediate of fast and reversible two-electron electrode reaction can be stabilized by the adsorption to the electrode surface. In square-wave voltammetry of this reaction mechanism, the split response may appear if the electrode surface is not completely covered by the adsorbed intermediate. The dependence of the difference between the net peak potentials of the prepeak and postpeak on the square-wave frequency is analyzed theoretically. This relationship can be used for the estimation of adsorption constant.

Abstract
A theory of square-wave voltammetry of two-step electrode reaction with kinetically controlled electron transfers is developed, and a special case of thermodynamically unstable intermediate is analyzed. If the first reaction step is reversible and the second one is quasireversible, the response splits into two peaks if the scan direction is inverted. The separation of these peaks increases with frequency.
