Oxygen reduction reaction features in neutral media on glassy carbon electrode functionalized by chemically prepared gold nanoparticles

Machine learning-based inverse design for electrochemically controlled microscopic gradients of O2 and H2O2

In microbiology, extracellular oxygen (O₂) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are spatiotemporally heterogenous, ubiquitously, at macroscopic level. Such spatiotemporal heterogeneities are critical to microorganisms, yet a well-defined method of studying such heterogenous microenvironments is lacking. This work develops a machine learning–based inverse design strategy that builds an electrochemical platform for achieving spatiotemporal control of O₂ and ROS microenvironments relevant to microbiology. The inverse design strategy not only demonstrates the power of machine learning to design concentration profiles in electrochemistry but also accelerates the development of custom microenvironments for specific microbial systems and allows researchers to better study how microenvironments affect microorganisms in myriads of environmental, biomedical, and sustainability-related applications.

A fundamental understanding of extracellular microenvironments of O₂ and reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as H₂O₂, ubiquitous in microbiology, demands high-throughput methods of mimicking, controlling, and perturbing gradients of O₂ and H₂O₂ at microscopic scale with high spatiotemporal precision. However, there is a paucity of high-throughput strategies of microenvironment design, and it remains challenging to achieve O₂ and H₂O₂ heterogeneities with microbiologically desirable spatiotemporal resolutions. Here, we report the inverse design, based on machine learning (ML), of electrochemically generated microscopic O₂ and H₂O₂ profiles relevant for microbiology. Microwire arrays with suitably designed electrochemical catalysts enable the independent control of O₂ and H₂O₂ profiles with spatial resolution of ∼10¹ μm and temporal resolution of ∼10° s. Neural networks aided by data augmentation inversely design the experimental conditions needed for targeted O₂ and H₂O₂ microenvironments while being two orders of magnitude faster than experimental explorations. Interfacing ML-based inverse design with electrochemically controlled concentration heterogeneity creates a viable fast-response platform toward better understanding the extracellular space with desirable spatiotemporal control.

Evaluation of mixed transition metal (Co, Mn, and Cu) oxide electrocatalysts anchored on different carbon supports for robust oxygen reduction reaction in neutral media

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a pivotal factor in assessing the overall efficiency of energy conversion and storage technologies. A promising family of ORR electrocatalysts is mixed transition-metal oxides (MTMOs), which have recently gained a growing research interest. In this study, we developed MTMOs with different compositions (designated as A_xB_3−xO₄; A = Cu, B = Co or Mn) anchored on two different carbon supports (activated carbon Vulcan XC-72 (AC) and graphene (G)) for catalyzing ORR in neutral media. Four different MTMO electrocatalysts (i.e., MnO₂–CuO/AC, CoO–CuO/AC, CoO–CuO/G, and MnO₂–CuO/G) were synthesized by a simple and scalable co-precipitation method. We documented the morphology and electrocatalytic properties of MTMO electrocatalysts using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and electrochemical techniques. Generally, MTMOs exhibited remarkably high ORR electrocatalytic activity with MTMOs anchored on an activated carbon support outperforming their respective MTMOs anchored on a graphene support, highlighting the importance of the catalyst support in determining the overall ORR activity of electrocatalysts. MnO₂–CuO/AC has the highest diffusion limiting current density (j) value of 4.2 mA cm⁻² at −600 mV (vs. SHE), which is ∼1.1–1.7-fold higher than other tested electrocatalysts (i.e., 3.9, 3.5, and 2.7 mA cm⁻² for CoO–CuO/AC, CoO–CuO/G, and MnO₂–CuO/G, respectively), and slightly lower than Pt/C (5.1 mA cm⁻²) at the same potential value. Moreover, all electrocatalysts exhibited good linearity and parallelism of the Koutechy–Levich (K–L) plots, suggesting that ORR followed first-order reaction kinetics with the number of electrons involved being close to four. Benefiting from their remarkable ORR electrochemical activities and low cost, our results reveal that non-precious MTMOs are efficient enough to replace expensive Pt for broad applications in energy conversion and electrocatalysis in neutral media, such as microbial fuel cells.

Control of Marine Bacteria and Diatom Biofouling by Constant and Alternating Potentials

The application of electrochemical potentials to surfaces is an easy and direct way to alter surface charge density, the structure of the electrochemical double layer, and the presence of electrochemically activated species. On such electrified interfaces the formation of biofilms is reduced. Here we investigate how applied potentials alter the colonization of surfaces by the marine bacterium Cobetia marina and the marine diatom Navicula perminuta. Different constant potentials between -0.8 and 0.6 V as well as regular switching between two potentials were investigated, and their influence on the attachment of the two biofilm-forming microorganisms on gold-coated working electrodes was quantified. Reduced bacteria and diatom attachment were found when negative potentials and alternating potentials were applied. The results are discussed on the basis of the electrochemical processes occurring at the working electrode in artificial seawater as revealed by cyclic voltammetry.

Characterizing salt permeability in polyamide desalination membranes using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Improving the performance of desalination membranes requires better measurements of salt permeability in the polyamide separating layer to elucidate the thermodynamic and kinetic components of membrane permselectivity. In this work, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is introduced as a technique to measure the salt permeability and estimate the salt partition coefficient in thin polyamide films created using molecular layer-by-layer deposition. The impedance of supported polyamide films ranging in thickness from 3.5 nm to 28.5 nm were measured in different electrolyte solutions. Impedance spectra were modeled with equivalent circuits containing resistive and capacitive elements associated with the EIS measurement system as well as characteristic low-frequency parallel resistive and capacitive elements that are associated with the polyamide film. The characteristic polyamide membrane resistance increases with film thickness, decreases with solution concentration, and is an order of magnitude greater for a divalent cationic solution than for a monovalent cationic solution. For each polyamide film, salt permeability is calculated from the membrane resistance, and a salt partition coefficient is estimated. At the highest solution concentration measured, which is representative of brackish water desalination conditions, the calculated salt permeabilities range from P _s = 1.3 × 10^-16 m s^-1 to 3.9 × 10^-16 m s^-1, and the estimated salt partition coefficients range from K _s = 0.008 to 0.016. These measurements demonstrate that EIS is a powerful tool for studying membrane permselectivity through the measurement of salt permeability in thin polyamide films.

Design of Therapeutic Self-Assembled Monolayers of Thiolated Abiraterone

The aim of our work was to synthetize of a new analogue of abiraterone-thiolated abiraterone (HS-AB) and design a gold surface monolayer, bearing in mind recent advances in tuning monolayer structures and using them as efficient drug delivery systems. Therapeutic self-assembled monolayers (TSAMs) were prepared by chemically attaching HS-AB to gold surfaces. Their properties were studied by voltammetry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A gold electrode with immobilized thioglycolic acid (HS-GA) was used for comparison. The surface concentration of HS-AB on the gold surface was 0.572 nmol/cm², determined from the area of the voltammetric reduction peaks (desorption process). The area per one molecule estimated from the voltammetry experiments was 0.291 nmol/cm². The capacity of thus prepared electrode was also tested. The calculated capacity for the HS-AB modified electrode is 2.90 μF/cm². The obtained value indicates that the monolayer on the gold electrode is quite well ordered and well-packed. AFM images show the formation of gold nanoparticles as a result of immersing the HS-AB modified gold electrode in an aqueous solution containing 1 mM HAuCl₄·3H₂O. These structures arise as a result of the interaction between the HS-AB compound adsorbed on the electrode and the AuCl₄^- ions. The voltammetric experiments also confirm the formation of gold structures with specific catalytic properties in the process of oxygen reduction.
