Abstract
Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare malformation or hamartomatous lesion in the central nervous system, characterized by a plaque-like mass within the leptomeninges and cerebral cortex. An even rarer condition is MA complicated with meningiomas. We herein report a case of meningioma associated with MA that might be erroneously interpreted as a higher-grade lesion or an invasion by preoperative radiologic and postoperative histological examinations.

Pure and non-pure meningioangiomatosis of 36 Chinese patients: an analysis of clinical presentation, diagnosis, histopathology and prognosis. Neurosurg Rev 2022; 45:3405-3415. Abstract
Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a disease that is extremely rarely reported. Sporadic MA is occasionally combined with meningioma or other lesions (identified as non-pure MA). This retrospective study investigated the difference between pure MA and non-pure MA by exploring clinical manifestations, histopathology characteristics, and outcomes of MA after surgery. We reviewed the medical records of 36 histopathologically confirmed MA patients (18 pure MA and 18 non-pure MA) who received surgery at our institution between 2012 and 2021. We compared differences in demographic, clinical, imaging, pathological features, and surgical outcomes between pure MA and non-pure MA through descriptive statistics. Compared to non-pure MA, pure MA presented with a more prominent male predilection (5:1 vs. 1.57:1, P = 0.264), a higher seizure incidence (83.3% vs 50.0%, P = 0.038), a more seizure type of GTCS (14/15 vs 5/9, P = 0.047), a less prominent enhancement on MRI (27.8% vs 88.9%, P < 0.001) and a preference of temporal and frontal lobe (100% vs 44.4%, P < 0.001). The differences in clinical characteristics between pure MA and non-pure MA demonstrate their disparate biological natures. Pure MA seems to be a non-neoplastic lesion, while non-pure MA is commonly combined with meningioma, which is a neoplastic lesion. A correct differential diagnosis can be achieved via a triad of the type of seizure, the location of lesion and the radiological presentation. MA is curable and the prognosis is excellent as most patients are free of seizure and recurrence after surgical treatment.

Abstract
Meningiomas combined with meningioangiomatosis (MA-M) present similarly to more invasive lesions because of their appearance on neuroimaging. These lesions are especially rare in pediatric patients and suggestive imaging can help identify them for differential diagnosis. An 11-year-old male child who presented with diplopia and a headache was found to have an edematous invasive appearing temporal lobe mass on magnetic resonance imaging. Despite the lesion’s appearance, it was completely resected and found to be a benign MA-M upon histopathologic examination. The present case demonstrated a rare meningioma with meningioangiomatosis that appeared to be a higher grade or invasive lesion upon initial imaging in a pediatric patient. A review of the literature was performed on patients who presented similarly. Despite the rarity of this condition in children, neuroimaging should be carefully examined prior to surgical resection of similar masses in preparation for highly vascular tissue, and post-operative course can be better anticipated when MA-M is considered during differential diagnosis.

Abstract
Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare process at the intersection of cerebral developmental and neoplastic disorders that often results in epilepsy. We evaluated molecular alterations in MA to characterize its biology and pathogenesis. We searched a comprehensive institutional database for patients with MA treated between 2004 and 2019. Demographic, clinical, surgical, and radiographical data were collected. MA and associated meningioma tissues were evaluated using a next-generation sequencing assay interrogating 1425 cancer-related genes. We studied 5 cases: 3 with MA and 2 with MA associated with a meningioma. Of the MAs associated with a meningioma, 1 had deletions in the NF2 gene in both the MA and the meningioma components, whereas the other had an NF2 deletion in only the MA component. Additional mutations were identified in the MA components, suggesting that MA arises from the meningioma rather than the meningioma resulting from a transformation of the MA. The 3 cases of pure MA showed variants of unknown significance with no alterations in known oncogenic drivers. Our findings provide a starting point to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of this rare lesion. Our study indicates that MA-meningiomas have a neoplastic nature that differs from the hamartomatous/developmental nature of pure MA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare cerebral lesion. Sporadic MA occasionally combines with meningioma (MA-M). The aim of the present study was to clarify whether MA-M and pure MA have clinical differences and to determine risk factors for unsatisfactory seizure outcomes in sporadic MA. METHODS We reported 14 sporadic MA cases in our center and conducted a literature review. We compared the demographic, clinical, imaging, electrophysiological and pathological features and surgical outcomes. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the risk factors for poor seizure outcomes. RESULTS MA-M cases showed a more prominent male predilection (4.2 times vs. 1.6 times, p = 0.04), a shorter duration of symptoms (2.8 ± 0.8 years vs. 5.2 ± 0.6 years, p = 0.02), and a lower seizure incidence (53.6 % vs. 89.3 %, p < 0.001) as compared to pure MA. A gyriform alteration on imaging was exclusively associated with pure MA. The Ki-67 was higher in the meningioma component than in the MA component in MA-M (1.2 ± 0.3 % vs. 6.1 ± 1.1 %, p < 0.001). Lesions located in the temporal lobe predicted poor seizure outcomes (p = 0.02, OR = 4.4, 95 % confidence interval, 1.24-15.89). CONCLUSION Clinical differences may be caused by the different biological natures. MA-M seems to be a neoplastic lesion, while pure MA seems to be a non-neoplastic lesion. Long-term follow-up is required for MA-M. Because the coexistence of hippocampal sclerosis may explain the poor seizure outcomes of MA located in the temporal lobe, it is important to identify underlying hippocampal sclerosis and to perform complete resection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare benign cerebral lesion. We aimed to evaluate the CT and MR features of sporadic MA, with a focus on the correlation between imaging and histopathologic findings. METHODS CT (n = 7) and MR (n = 8) images of eight patients (6 men and 2 women; mean age, 12.8 years; range, 4-22 years) with pathologically proven MA were retrospectively reviewed. After dividing the MA lesions according to their distribution into cortical and subcortical white matter components, the morphologic characteristics were analyzed and correlated with histopathologic findings in seven patients. RESULTS CT and MR images showed cortical (n = 4, 50%) and subcortical white matter (n = 7, 88%) components of MA. All four cortical components revealed hyperattenuation on CT scan and T1 isointensity/T2 hypointensity on MR images, whereas subcortical white matter components showed hypoattenuation on CT scan and T1 hypointensity/T2 hyperintensity on MR images. Two cortical components (25%) demonstrated enhancement and one subcortical white matter component demonstrated cystic change. Seven cases were available for imaging-histopathologic correlation. In all seven cases, the cortex was involved by MA and six patients (86%) showed subcortical white matter involvement by MA. There were excellent correlations between the imaging and histopathologic findings in subcortical white matter components, and the accuracy was 100% (seven of seven); whereas there were poor correlations in cortical components, and the accuracy was 43% (three of seven). CONCLUSIONS The cerebral cortex and subcortical white matter were concomitantly involved by MA. Subcortical white matter components of MA were more apparent than cortical components on CT and MR imaging.

Abstract
Aim. To analyze the clinicopathological features of meningioangiomatosis (MA) associated with meningioma. Methods. We present one case of MA associated with meningioma. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry were used. Results. The age of the patient was 33-year-old man. Histopathologically, MA was characterized by vascular proliferation with perivascular meningothelial cells and/or fibroblast proliferation, entrapped glial islands. In addition, MA was associated with transitional meningioma. The patient was alive without evidence of recurrence at 18 months after mass resection. Conclusion. MA associated with meningioma is an extremely rare lesion. The differential diagnosis includes cortical invasion by meningioma and intracerebral schwannoma. Patients with MA associated with meningioma often have a good prognosis after operation.

Abstract
Group I p21-activated kinases (PAK) are important effectors of the small GTPases Rac and Cdc42, which regulate cell motility/migration, survival, proliferation, and gene transcription. Hyperactivation of these kinases have been reported in many tumor types, making PAKs attractive targets for therapeutic intervention. PAKs are activated by growth factor-mediated signaling and are negatively regulated by the tumor suppressor neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)/Merlin. Thus, tumors characterized by NF2 inactivation would be expected to show hyperactivated PAK signaling. On the basis of this rationale, we evaluated the status of PAK signaling in malignant mesothelioma, an aggressive neoplasm that is resistant to current therapies and shows frequent inactivation of NF2. We show that group I PAKs are activated in most mesotheliomas and mesothelioma cell lines and that genetic or pharmacologic inhibition of PAKs is sufficient to inhibit mesothelioma cell proliferation and survival. We also identify downstream effectors and signaling pathways that may contribute mechanistically to PAK-related tumorigenesis. Specifically, we show that inhibition of PAK results in attenuation of AKT and Raf-MAPK signaling and decreased tumor cell viability. Collectively, these data suggest that pharmacologic inhibition of group I PAKs may have therapeutic efficacy in tumors characterized by PAK activation.

Abstract
Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare, benign hamartomatous lesion found in cerebral cortex and leptomeninges. It occurs mostly in 5 - 15 year old children in form isolated or diffuse; the diffuse form may be associated with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). The sporadic type in the adults is less common.The patient was a 37 year-old man with a long history of frontal headache. In suspected sinusitis, the patient underwent cerebral MRI that showed hypointense lesion in the right frontal lobe with heterogeneous contrast enhancement after gadolinium administration. There were no stigmata or family history of neurofibromatosis. A right pterional approach with a supraorbital craniotomy was performed. The lesion was removed with complete remission of the headache in the postoperative time. MA enters into differential diagnosis with several other diseases and a correct diagnosis is mandatory. The total surgical removal is the treatment of choice, and the prognosis after surgery is usually excellent for the absence of recurrence in sporadic cases.

Abstract
Purpose. Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare, benign lesion that commonly mimics other intracranial malformations in clinical presentation and appearance on imaging. The case presented and the literature review performed highlight the importance of combining MRI and CT results to better characterize intracranial lesions and including MA on the list of differential diagnoses of patients presenting with seizures. Methods. The case described is of a 19-year-old male with a 10-year history of worsening seizures refractory to multiple drug regimens. MRI revealed an atypical vascular malformation. The patient underwent surgical resection of the epileptogenic cortex. Results. Although the radiologic impression of the lesion was a vascular malformation, pathological examination revealed MA. A literature search performed highlights the variability of the appearance of MA on CT and MRI and suggests the utility of the T2 GRE sequence in illustrating the presence of calcification and, in a lesion with other characteristic features, the diagnosis of MA. Conclusion. MA can be a difficult diagnosis to make based on imaging findings alone. However, in a patient with a characteristic history and presentation, the presence of a calcified mass on CT and MRI brain susceptibility artifact on a T2 GRE sequence may suggest MA.

Abstract
Meningioangiomatosis is a rare hamartomatous lesion or meningiovascular malformation in brain. In extremely rare condition, meningioma may occur together with meningioangiomatosis, and only 19 cases have been described in English literature until now. We now report a case of meningioangiomatosis-associated meningioma with atypical and clear cell variant. A 34-year-old man presented a 3-month history of progressive numbness and weakness of his left lower extremity. He had no stigmata of neurofibromatosis type 2. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multifocal lesions in the right frontoparietal lobe. The lesions were totally removed. Microscopically, parts of lesions were atypical and clear cell meningioma corresponding to WHO grade II. The adjacent brain parenchyma showed the histological features of meningioangiomatosis. Neoplastic cells in atypical meningioma area were immunoreactive to epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) with high MIB-1 index of up to 20%. However, the spindle cells in meningioangiomatosis area were negative for EMA with low MIB-1 index of up to 1%. The diagnosis of atypical meningioma associated with sporadic meningioangiomatosis was made. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a meningioangiomatosis-associated meningioma with atypical and clear cell variant component to be described. The patient had been followed-up for 11 months without adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy. No tumor recurrence was found during this period. Meningioangiomatosis-associated meningioma is more likely to occur in younger patients and histologically to mimic parenchymal invasion of brain. We suggest that postoperative radiotherapy or chemotherapy should be given careful consideration to avoid over-treatment due to erroneously interpret as malignant meningioma.

Abstract
Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare congenital tumor that occurs mostly in 5-15 year old children. There have been only 5 cases previously reported that described the cystic nature within these tumors. We present a case of a MA accompanied by a separate macrocyst. A normally developed 2 year-old female patient presented with partial and generalized seizures. The brain computerized tomogram and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of a calcified mass accompanied by a cyst in the right parietal area, surrounded by low density and high attenuation edema and hemorrhage. Upon right parietal craniotomy, a 1.6 cm x 1.2 cm x 0.5 cm sized plate-like, gray-white, slightly hard mass was seen and it was completely excised. Approximately 1 cm from the mass in the anterior lateral direction, a cyst was found and subsequent biopsy of the cyst wall revealed no tumor tissue, and therefore the cyst was not removed. Pathologic report demonstrated the meningioangiomatosis. Follow up examination 2 years later showed no recurrence of the tumor, and there was no evidence of neurological deficits. Authors suggest that cysts that arise in the surrounding tissues of tumors may not be tumor cysts, and do not require surgical removal.

Abstract
Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare lesion appearing sporadically or as a part of neurofibromatosis 2. The occurrences of meningiomas arising from MA (MA-M) have raised doubts about the traditional concept of a hamartomatous origin for MA. Cytogenetic or molecular studies on MA, with or without meningiomas, are limited because of the rarity of MA. The current study was to evaluate the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in seven cases of MA-M and two cases of pure MA. LOH on six chromosomes (1p32, 9p21, 13q14, 16q22, 17p, and 22q12) were investigated using 13 sets of microsatellite markers, including D1S193, D1S463, D22S193, D22S929, D22S282, TP53, D17S796, D16S421, D16S512, D13S118, D13S153, D9S162, and D9S104. PCR was performed using each marker and polymorphic analysis was accomplished by silver staining. Immunohistochemical stain for Ki-67 was carried out and labeling index was measured by using a semiquantitative manual counting method. The meningioma portions of MA-Ms showed LOH for loci on chromosomes 22q12, 9p21, and 1p32 in 57.1% (4/7), 28.6% (2/7), and 28.6% (2/7) of cases, respectively. The MA portions of MA-M had a LOH for loci on 22q12 in 28.6% (2/7) of cases, whereas each pure MA harbored one LOH on either chromosome 22q12 or 9p21. The proliferation indices of MA-Ms were significantly higher in the meningioma than in the MA components. Our data suggest that both the meningioma and the MA undergo the same overlapping clonal process, with the MA-M while undergoing additional genetic alterations that confer a greater proliferative potential.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare benign disorder. It may occur sporadically or in association with neurofibromatosis (NF). The sporadic type typically presents with seizures, whereas that associated with NF is often asymptomatic. Of the 100 cases reported, only 14 are associated with NF. We now report 2 additional cases of MA associated with neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) in a single family, with one occurring in the cerebellum. The etiology, pathology, and imaging features of MA are presented. CASE DESCRIPTION A 38-year-old woman (patient 1) presented with a 4-month history of ataxia. She had been diagnosed previously with NF2. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brain revealed bilateral acoustic neuromas and multiple calcified intracranial lesions. Her 13-year-old daughter (patient 2) presented with complex partial seizures. MRI scans of the brain revealed bilateral acoustic neuromas and a right parietal mass. Patient 1 underwent a suboccipital craniotomy to resect the right-sided acoustic neuroma. A small portion of normal-appearing cerebellar cortex was resected to avoid undue retraction. Histopathologic examination showed the presence of a lesion consistent with MA. Patient 2 underwent a right temporal-parietal craniotomy to remove the enhancing epileptogenic right posterior temporoparietal lesion. Histopathologic analysis showed a lesion consistent with meningioma and MA. CONCLUSIONS MA has been reported infrequently in association with NF2. We now report 2 cases of MA associated with NF2 in one family, and we add the cerebellum to possible locations of occurrence. MA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cortical lesions, particularly in patients with NF2.

Abstract
Meningeal derived tumors of the first 2 decades of life are often diagnostically challenging due to the wide morphologic spectrum encountered and the rarity of most individual entities. The 2 most common patterns include the dural/leptomeningeal-based mass and neoplastic meningitis. Both primary and secondary meningeal presentations may occur, either early or late in the course of various meningothelial, mesenchymal, embryonal, glial, hematopoietic, histiocytic, melanocytic, and inflammatory tumors. As in other areas of pediatric pathology, there are significant differences between this patient cohort and adults, differences which will be emphasized in this review.

Abstract
Over the last decade, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) has emerged as a powerful clinical and research tool for the assessment of target DNA dosages within interphase nuclei. Detectable alterations include aneusomies, deletions, gene amplifications, and translocations, with primary advantages to the pathologist including its basis in morphology, its applicability to archival, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) material, and its similarities to immunohistochemistry. Recent technical advances such as improved hybridization protocols, markedly expanded probe availability resulting from the human genome sequencing initiative, and the advent of high-throughput assays such as gene chip and tissue microarrays have greatly enhanced the applicability of FISH. In our lab, we currently utilize only a limited battery of DNA probes for routine diagnostic purposes, with determination of chromosome 1p and 19q dosage in oligodendroglial neoplasms representing the most common application. However, research applications are numerous and will likely translate into a growing list of clinically useful markers in the near future. In this review, we highlight the advantages and disadvantages of FISH and familiarize the reader with current applications in diagnostic and investigative neuropathology.

Abstract
A case of cerebral meningioangiomatosis with rare cyst formation is reported. A 14-year-old boy without any stigmata of neurofibromatosis type 2 presented intractable complex partial and generalized seizures since the age of 12 years. Neuroradiological studies showed an abnormal cystic mass with calcification in the left frontal lobe of the cerebrum. The tumor was located in the leptomeninges and cerebral cortex. The patient underwent surgical treatment because medical treatment with phenytoin and sodium valproate was not sufficient to control the seizures. An intraoperative electrocorticogram revealed that epileptic foci were recorded from the cortex, which was adjacent to the lesion. Histopathology showed specific features of meningioangiomatosis with meningioma-like nodules. The patient did not have any seizures with anticonvulsants after surgery. It is important to distinguish meningioangiomatosis from other possible cortical lesions and epileptic foci should be carefully considered before resection, because it is a benign and surgically manageable cause of seizures.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare lesion, probably of malformative origin, consisting of meningovascular proliferation and leptomeningeal calcification. Patients with MA usually present with seizures or persistent headaches. Neurofibromatosis may be associated in a variable proportion of patients, while in others it may be sporadic. Surgical treatment is usually recommended, and is gratifying in most cases. Rarely, MA has been described coexisting with meningiomas, arteriovenous malformations, encephaloceles, oligodendrogliomas, meningeal haemangiopericytomas and orbital erosion. Among these, meningiomatosis with meningioma is the most frequent combination. CASE REPORT We report a case of MA with meningioma in an 18-month-old girl, who presented with recurrent seizures. DISCUSSION In these situations, it is extremely important for the pathologist to be aware of this entity and to distinguish it from other lesions, like cortical invasion by a meningioma, intraparenchymal meningioma and intracerebral schwannoma, which it may mimic.

Abstract
Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare seizure-associated lesion of presumed hamartomatous or developmental origin. It is occasionally combined with a neoplasm, most commonly meningioma (MA-M). In the current study, we examined 24 cases (14 pure MA, 10 MA-M) using immunohistochemistry for merlin, protein 4.1 B, progesterone receptor (PR), and MIB-1, as well as FISH for NF2 and 4.1B gene dosages. Nine cases of MA-M (90%) had gene deletions (NF2/4.7B), protein losses (merlin/protein 4.1B), and/or PR positivity, with a similar or identical phenotype in both components. No PR positivity or gene deletions were seen in pure MAs, though merlin and/or protein 4.1B were immunonegative in six cases. Our data suggest that in most MA-Ms, the MA component is neoplastic, likely representing an exuberant perivascular pattern of spread from the meningioma, rather than an underlying hamartoma. This pattern of spread may be facilitated by meningiomas that are predominantly leptomeningeal or intracerebral in origin. It remains important to distinguish this pattern from true brain invasion, given the more ominous prognostic significance of the latter. In contrast, most perivascular spindled cells of pure MA are genetically and immunohistochemically similar to non-neoplastic meningothelial cells, consistent with current histogenetic theories.

Abstract
Meningiomas are common central nervous system tumors that originate from the meningeal coverings of the brain and the spinal cord. Most meningiomas are slowly growing benign tumors that histologically correspond to World Health Organization (WHO) grade I. However, certain rare histological variants (clear cell, chordoid, papillary, and rhabdoid), as well as atypical (WHO grade II) and anaplastic (WHO grade III) meningiomas show a more aggressive biological behavior and are clinically associated with a high risk of local recurrence and a less favorable prognosis. This review summarizes the most important features of meningioma pathology and provides an up-to-date overview about the molecular mechanisms involved in meningioma initiation and progression. Current data indicate that meningioma initiation is closely linked to the inactivation of one or more members of the highly conserved protein 4.1 superfamily, including the neurofibromatosis type 2 gene product merlin/schwannomin, protein 4.IB (DAL-1) and protein 4.1R. The genetic alterations in atypical meningiomas are complex and involve losses on 1p, 6q, 10, 14q and 18q, as well as gains on multiple chromosomes. The relevant genes are still unknown. Anaplastic meningiomas show even more complex genetic alterations, including frequent alteration of the CDKN2A, p14ARF, and CDKN2B tumor suppressor genes at 9p21, as well as gene amplification on 17q23. A better understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in meningioma pathogenesis may not only lead to the identification of novel diagnostic and prognostic marker but will also facilitate the development of new pathogenesis-based therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
We report a case of sudden, unexpected death associated with meningioangiomatosis in a 13-year-old, previously healthy male without a history of seizures, neurologic deficits, or clinical stigmata of neurofibromatosis. There was no family history of neurofibromatosis. The postmortem examination showed a 5-cm mass involving the right posterior frontal and orbital frontal cortex that had microscopic features diagnostic of meningioangiomatosis. Because no other cause of death was found, we postulate that he likely died as a result of a seizure secondary to meningioangiomatosis.
