Abstract
Previous research has suggested that fear of flying, which is defined as a situational, specific phobia, could overlap with depressive and anxiety disorders. Whether the neuronal dysfunctions including altered serotonergic activity in the brain and altered neural oscillations observed for depressive and anxiety disorders also overlap with alterations in fear of flying is unclear. Here, thirty-six participants with self-reported fear of flying (FF) and forty-one unaffected participants (NFF) were recruited. The participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the State-trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Fear of Flying Scale (FFS). EEG-recording was conducted during resting-state and during presentation of auditory stimuli with varying loudness levels for analysis of the Loudness Dependence of Auditory Evoked Potentials (LDAEP), which is suggested to be inversely related to central serotonergic activity. Participants with fear of flying did not differ from the control group with regard to BDI-II and STAI data. The LDAEP was higher over F4 electrode in the FF group compared to controls, whereas exploratory analysis suggest that differences between groups were conveyed by female participants. Moreover, the FF group showed relatively higher right frontal alpha activity compared to the control group, whereas no difference in frequency power (alpha, beta and theta) was observed. Thus, this study brought the first hint for reduced serotonergic activity in individuals with fear of flying and relatively higher right frontal activity. Thus, based on the preliminary findings, future research should aim to examine the boundaries with anxiety and depressive disorders and to clarify the distinct neural mechanisms.

Abstract
PURPOSE Recently, altered visual cortical processes i.e., lack of habituation to visual evoked potentials (VEP), has been highlighted in both photosensitive epilepsy and in a specific i.e., analytic mode of processing visual inputs. In this study we aimed at evaluating the relationship between photosensitivity (PS) and analytic style of processing visual information, in a sample of 30 patients with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy (IGE) and matched healthy controls. METHODS At our Epilepsy unit of the Sapienza University of Rome, we consecutively enrolled 15 patients with IGE with PSand matched them with 15 patients with IGE without PS and 15 Healthy Volunteers. All patients underwent EEG recording in basal conditions during hyperventilation (3 Min), and intermittent light stimulation. The most effective frequencies comprised from 12 to 16 Hz. The instruments used to gather psychological cognitive behavioral data, consisted of participation in two tests: the Sternberg-Wagner Self-Assessment Inventory and the Mariani Learning Style Questionnaire. RESULTS Compared to controls, both IGE groups show significantly higher scores for the analytic style (One-way ANOVA, F(2,44) = 110.3, p < 0.0001). Epilepsy groups thereby showed very distinctive cognitive styles as measured with the Sternberg test. In the visual style, scores of the photosensitive Individuals with IGE were significantly higher than the non-photosensitive individuals with IGE (p < 0.0001, Tukey's post hoc test). CONCLUSIONS An association between analytic style of processing visual information and PS in IGE has been shown. The common neurophysiological features between these two factors, suggest the possibility to evaluate this cognitive behavior as a potential target for nonpharmacological therapeutic strategies in photosensitive epilepsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite pain being its most prominent feature, migraine is primarily a disorder of sensory processing. Electrophysiology-based research in the field has consistently developed over the last fifty years. OBJECTIVE To summarize the current knowledge on the electrophysiological characteristics of the migraine brain, and discuss perspectives. METHODS We critically reviewed the literature on the topic to present and discuss articles selected on the basis of their significance and/or novelty. RESULTS Physiologic fluctuations within time, between-subject differences, and methodological issues account as major limitations of electrophysiological research in migraine. Nonetheless, several abnormalities revealed through different approaches have been described in the literature. Altogether, these results are compatible with an abnormal state of sensory processing. PERSPECTIVES The greatest contribution of electrophysiological testing in the future will most probably be the characterization of sub-groups of migraine patients sharing specific electrophysiological traits. This should serve as strategy towards personalized migraine treatment. Incorporation of novel methods of analysis would be worthwhile.

Abstract
Relevant to the study of epileptogenesis is learning processing, given the pivotal role that neuroplasticity assumes in both mechanisms. Recently, evoked potential analyses showed a link between analytic cognitive style and altered neural excitability in both migraine and healthy subjects, regardless of cognitive impairment or psychological disorders. In this study we evaluated analytic/global and visual/auditory perceptual dimensions of cognitive style in patients with epilepsy. Twenty-five cryptogenic temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients matched with 25 idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) sufferers and 25 healthy volunteers were recruited and participated in three cognitive style tests: "Sternberg-Wagner Self-Assessment Inventory", the C. Cornoldi test series called AMOS, and the Mariani Learning style Questionnaire. Our results demonstrate a significant association between analytic cognitive style and both IGE and TLE and respectively a predominant auditory and visual analytic style (ANOVA: p values <0,0001). These findings should encourage further research to investigate information processing style and its neurophysiological correlates in epilepsy.

Abstract
Background Lack of habituation of visual evoked potentials (VEP) is a common finding in migraine patients between attacks. Previous studies have suggested an electrophysiological familial aggregation pattern associated with migraine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of a positive familial history of migraine on VEP amplitude and habituation. Methods We recorded six blocks of 100 VEP during continuous pattern-reversal stimulation in 30 patients with migraine between attacks (MO) and in 30 healthy volunteers, of whom 15 had a first-degree relative suffering from migraine (HVm) and 15 had not (HV). Results Both MO and HVm had a significant deficit of VEP habituation and similarly reduced N1-P1 first block amplitudes, compared to HV (habituation slope: MO = 0.033, HVm = 0.021, HV = −0.025, HV vs. MO p = 0.002, HV vs. HVm p = 0.036; mean N1-P1 amplitude in the first block: MO = 9.08 µV, HVm = 9.29 µV, HV = 12.19 µV. HV vs. MO p = 0.041, HV vs. HVm p = 0.076). The first block N1-P1 amplitude was negatively correlated with the habituation slope for both MO (ρ = −.44, p = 0.015) and HVm (ρ = −.56, p = 0.031) while no significant correlation was found in HV (ρ = .17, p = 0.53). There were no differences in VEP latencies between the groups. Conclusions Our study suggests that lack of habituation of visual evoked potentials is probably a genetically determined endophenotypic trait that is associated with both migraine and migraine susceptibility. We hypothesize that genetic diversity of populations could account for some of the discrepancies between electrophysiological studies performed in migraine and for interindividual variations among the subgroups.
