Abstract
Background The concept of wellbeing is expansive and intricate, making it challenging to define precisely. Similarly, the instruments employed to assess wellbeing are complex and multifaceted. Therefore, it is more appropriate to refer to the notion of wellbeing as Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), which is the central focus of many measures used to assess the feeling of wellbeing. This review aimed to identify the tools most commonly used to evaluate HRQoL in individuals with Parkinsonism-a group of movement disorders that negatively impact the quality of life due to the intricate interplay of symptoms, socio-demographic characteristics, and psychological factors. The main aim was to assess the psychometric properties of these measures in terms of validity and reliability. Methods A literature review was conducted, focusing on research related to the assessment of HRQoL in connection to symptoms of Parkinsonism. This review included all studies that examined HRQoL using evaluation scales, exams, or self-reported questionnaires. The literature review was conducted using the databases Scopus and Web of Science and the search engine PubMed to identify studies published between 1996 and 2023. Only records that assessed HRQoL in individuals with Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonism were selected for evaluation. Results A total of 393 records were examined, and eight tools were identified as the most frequently used in the evaluation of HRQoL. Discussion The results show a significant gap in knowledge regarding the latent structure and measurement invariance of HRQoL measurements, which may have a significant influence on the interpretation of test outcomes. Moreover, there is a lack of clear divergent validity between HRQoL assessments and other tests used as predictors of HRQoL. This could represent a significant limitation, affecting the construct and criterion validity of HRQoL measures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Progressive Supranuclear Palsy quality of life scale (PSP-QoL) has been shown to be a useful tool for capturing health-related quality of life of patients in "everyday life" and in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) research. However, at 45 items in length, the questionnaire can take a long time, exhausting PSP patients, in particular if cognitive impaired, which can have a negative impact on the assessment. The aim of this study was to establish a condensed version of the PSP-QoL for research and routine clinical care. METHODS In this retrospective study, data originating from a German cohort of PSP patients was analyzed. Data from 245 PSP patients were included in this study. The short PSP-QoL questionnaire was created using a two-factor solution and item-total and inter-item correlations for mental and physical aspects of daily living of the PSP-QoL followed by confirmatory factor analysis. RESULTS The final scale included 12 items representing mental (five items) and physical symptoms (seven items). The specified two-factor model displayed an excellent fit in the confirmatory factor analysis. The short Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Quality of Life scale (PSP-ShoQoL) correlated moderately with the PSP Rating Scale (r [243] = 0.514, P < 0.001) and Geriatric depression scale (r [231] = 0.548, P < 0.001). Sensitivity to change confirmed a significant decrease in QoL after 12 months. DISCUSSION In this study, we created a 12-item PSP-ShoQoL designed to "facilitate" daily clinical work that correlated strongly with the PSP-QoL and was sensitive to change. © 2024 The Author(s). Abstract
BACKGROUND Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare 4R-tauopathy. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may improve specific symptoms. OBJECTIVES This randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled trial aimed at verifying the short-, mid-, and long-term effect of multiple sessions of anodal tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) cortex in PSP. METHODS Twenty-five patients were randomly assigned to active or sham stimulation (2 mA for 20 minute) for 5 days/week for 2 weeks. Participants underwent assessments at baseline, after the 2-week stimulation protocol, then after 45 days and 3 months from baseline. Primary outcomes were verbal and semantic fluency. The efficacy was verified with analysis of covariance. RESULTS We failed to detect a significant effect of active stimulation on primary outcomes. Stimulation was associated to worsening of specific behavioral complaints. CONCLUSIONS A 2-week protocol of anodal left DLPFC tDCS is not effective in PSP. Specific challenges in running symptomatic clinical trials with classic design are highlighted. © 2024 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Abstract
Background Psychometric instruments assessing behavioural and functional outcomes (BFIs) in neurological, geriatric and psychiatric populations are relevant towards diagnostics, prognosis and intervention. However, BFIs often happen not to meet methodological-statistical standards, thus lowering their level of recommendation in clinical practice and research. This work thus aimed at (1) providing an up-to-date compendium on psychometrics, diagnostics and usability of available Italian BFIs and (2) delivering evidence-based information on their level of recommendation. Methods This review was pre-registered (PROSPERO ID: CRD42021295430) and performed according to PRISMA guidelines. Several psychometric, diagnostic and usability measures were addressed as outcomes. Quality assessment was performed via an ad hoc checklist, the Behavioural and Functional Instrument Quality Assessment. Results Out of an initial N = 830 reports, 108 studies were included (N = 102 BFIs). Target constructs included behavioural/psychiatric symptoms, quality of life and physical functioning. BFIs were either self- or caregiver-/clinician-report. Studies in clinical conditions (including neurological, psychiatric and geriatric ones) were the most represented. Validity was investigated for 85 and reliability for 80 BFIs, respectively. Criterion and factorial validity testing were infrequent, whereas content and ecological validity and parallel forms were almost never addressed. Item response theory analyses were seldom carried out. Diagnostics and norms lacked for about one-third of BFIs. Information on administration time, ease of use and ceiling/floor effects were often unreported. Discussion Several available BFIs for the Italian population do not meet adequate statistical-methodological standards, this prompting a greater care from researchers involved in their development. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Depression is one of the most common neuropsychiatric symptoms in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Yet, few studies have examined the ability of available instruments to detect depressive symptoms in PSP. Aims of the present study were to (I) report psychometric properties of the Beck Depression Inventory Second Edition (BDI-II) in PSP, (II) establish the BDI-II cut-off indicating the presence of depression in PSP and (III) describe clinical correlates as well as correlation with quality of life of depressive symptoms in PSP. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS At the Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases of the University of Salerno, Italy, the BDI-II was validated in 62 PSP patients diagnosed according to the Movement Disorder Society criteria. Patients underwent a clinical interview, a motor evaluation, extensive cognitive and behavioral testing. RESULTS The mean BDI-II total score was 15.92 ± 10.31. The internal consistency was high (Cronbach's alpha = 0.868); corrected item-total correlation was >0.40 for the majority of items. The significant and moderate correlation of the BDI-II with other tools evaluating depressive symptoms indicated adequate convergent validity of the scale. The satisfactory cut-off to identify patients with clinically significant depression was >14.5. We also showed a correlation between higher scores on BDI-II and lower quality of life, irrespective of motor and cognitive burden. CONCLUSION In conclusion, the BDI-II is a reliable and valid tool for the assessment of depression symptoms in PSP. Such data are useful to standardize studies of depression in PSP and to quantify the effectiveness of any interventions on this disabling symptom.
