Abstract
Background. Periradicular surgery is the last treatment option for teeth with persistent periradicular endodontic lesions. This study aimed to assess the adhesion of fibroblasts to root dentin conditioned with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), MTAD, and QMix. Methods. Twelve dentin discs were fabricated of 6 human single-rooted teeth. Fibroblasts were isolated from the periodontal ligament (PDL) of a premolar tooth. The teeth were healthy and freshly extracted from the socket. The samples were divided into four groups for surface conditioning with (I) EDTA, (II) MTAD, (III) QMix, and the control group. Fibroblasts were cultured on conditioned dentin discs at 37°C, 95% air, and 5% CO2 for 4 hours and then rinsed with PBS three times to eliminate unattached cells from the surface. The mean counts of attached cells were calculated using a Neubauer chamber. Also, the attachment of fibroblasts was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results. The mean counts of fibroblasts attached to root dentin in EDTA, QMix, MTAD, and control groups were 303±46, 243±41, 213±33, and 347±38, respectively. No significant difference was noted in the number of fibroblasts attached between MTAD, EDTA, and QMix and the control group (P>0.05). Under SEM, the fibroblasts were flat and spindle-shaped, with cytoplasmic processes covering the untreated dentin surface. In the experimental groups, the cells were rounder with fewer processes. All the three groups showed weaker adhesion to dentin compared to the control (untreated dentin) group. Conclusion. Under the limitations of this study, it was concluded that treating the dentin surface with EDTA, MTAD, or QMIX might not be an effective way to improve the adhesion of human PDL fibroblasts.

Abstract
Introduction: This study aimed to compare the effects of root biomodification by citric acid and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) with LED and laser on the proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). Methods: This in vitro experimental study evaluated 60 single-rooted teeth extracted due to periodontal disease. The teeth underwent scaling and root planing (SRP), and then 5 × 5 mm blocks were prepared from the cervical area of the teeth 1 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction. The blocks were divided into 4 groups (n=15 blocks): SRP alone (control), SRP + citric acid, SRP + toluidine blue (TBO) + LED light, and SRP + TBO + laser. HGFs were seeded on the surface of the samples, and the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay was performed after 24, 48 and 72 hours. Group comparisons were performed using repeated measures ANOVA, while pairwise comparisons of the time points were performed by an LSD test. Results: Cell proliferation was higher in all experimental groups at 48 and 72 hours, compared with 24 hours (P < 0.05). Cell proliferation was significantly different in the citric acid group at 24 hours (P = 0.016) and 48 hours (P = 0.015), compared with other groups. However, cell proliferation was not significantly different in the aPDT group with LED Photosan and a diode laser at 24 and 48 hours (P > 0.05). Conclusion: aPDT and citric acid can enhance the proliferation of HGFs on dentin blocks. Further studies can pave the way for their future use in the clinical setting.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Anodic oxidation of titanium implant abutment collars has been used to mask their unesthetic grayish color. However, the effect of anodic oxidation on the health and appearance of peri-implant soft tissues is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this split-mouth clinical study was to investigate the effect of anodized titanium on the health and esthetics of peri-implant soft tissues. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 60 osseointegrated implants placed in 30 participants were included in the present study. Each participant received 2 randomly allocated abutments, one with a pink anodized collar and the other with an unanodized one to form 2 groups: unanodized group (control group) and anodized group (experimental group). All implants were restored with lithium disilicate restorations. Evaluations of the peri-implant soft tissues were performed at the time of definitive restoration insertion (baseline) and after 3, 6, 12, and 18 months: peri-implant probing depth, soft tissue recession, modified sulcus bleeding index, modified plaque index, and modified gingival index. The esthetics of peri-implant soft tissues were evaluated by using the modified pink esthetic score. The paired t test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for comparing the 2 study groups at each point of time depending on the normality of the variables (α=.05). To compare each variable at different time points within each group separately, repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman tests were used according to the normality of the variables, followed by post hoc pairwise comparisons by using the Bonferroni adjusted significance (α=.05). RESULTS Five peri-implant soft tissue indices were followed up throughout the study. No statistically significant differences were found among the mean values of the tested indices in the anodized and unanodized groups throughout the evaluation periods (P>.05). The collective mean values of the modified pink esthetic score also showed no statistically significant differences between the groups (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS Based on this split-mouth clinical study, pink anodized titanium abutment collars do not produce a clinically significant effect on the health or esthetics of peri-implant soft tissues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is being used in endodontics to improve orthograde root canal disinfection as an adjunct to standard treatments. Conversely, evidence concerning the application of aPDT in retrograde endodontic surgery is limited. Thus, the aim of the present study was to provide additional data regarding the use of aPDT in the surgical endodontic treatment of periapical lesions. METHODS A total of 25 consecutive patients presenting teeth with periapical radiolucency eventually associated with clinical signs and symptoms of apical periodontitis were included. Following access flap completion, osteotomy, mechanical debridement, root apical third resection, and preparation of the root-end cavity, aPDT was applied to decontaminate the surgical site using phenothiazine chloride dye at a concentration of 10 mg/mL and irradiation with a hand-held 100-mW diode laser with a wavelength of 660 ± 10 nm. At the latest follow-up visit, healing was evaluated as successful, uncertain, or failure according to well-established clinical and radiological criteria. RESULTS Overall, 31 periapical lesions were treated with aPDT. Healing proceeded uneventfully. The mean follow-up time was 36.19 months, with times ranging from 12 to 85 months. A total of 25 (80.65%) cases were classified as successful, 5 (16.13%) as uncertain, and only one (3.22%) as failure. Irrespective of the treatment outcome, all treated teeth were still functional, with no symptoms reported by the patients. CONCLUSION aPDT as an adjunctive treatment modality in the surgical endodontic treatment of periapical lesions showed promising medium-term results associated with preservation of all diseased teeth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Wound healing is a multifactorial procedure involving different cell types and biological mediators. The principles of wound healing are also applicable to periodontal tissues. The formation and stability of blood clots play a vital role in successful healing of wounds in periodontal tissues. The aim of the present review was to highlight the vital factors of periodontal flaps associated with blood clot stability. HIGHLIGHT The data on periodontal regeneration and wound healing have evolved greatly in light of several factors, including space for blood clots and blood clot stabilization. In periodontal osseous defects, the stability of blood clots seems critical to wound healing. If mechanical forces can be managed by wound stabilization, the gingival flap-tooth root interface may show connective tissue repair. However, compromised adhesion is susceptible to mechanical forces and can cause wound breakage and epithelialization. CONCLUSION The presence of a thick blood clot may hinder the plasmatic circulation between the recipient bed and graft during the initial stage of healing, which is critical in cases of mucogingival surgery. Root conditioning can also determine the healing consequence by enhancing blood clot adhesion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the behavior of fibroblasts from human periodontal ligament (hPLF) cultured on dental roots subjected to different protocols of citric acid conditioning. MATERIALS AND METHODS 32 human teeth extracted due to advanced periodontal disease provided 63 radicular fragments, which were randomly divided in groups according to the treatment given to the surface: rinsing with saline solution for 90 s (C), 10 % citric acid (CA10), or 50 % citric acid (CA50). The treatments were applied during 90 s, 120 s and 180 s (n = 9). hPLF were cultured for 24, 48 and 72 h (n = 3) on the treated samples and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for surface area covered by cells and dentinal tubules widening. RESULTS Excepting group C, all the other groups showed almost complete coverage of root surface by hPLF with time. At 24 h of cell culture, the largest area of coverage was seen in the samples treated with CA10-90 (98 ± 0.89 %) at 24 h of cell culture and this difference was significant (p < 0.05) in comparison to CA10-180 (84.04 ± 5.01 %), CA50-90 (63.28 ± 12.46 %), CA50-180 (56.59 ± 8.76 %) and C (0.06 ± 0.11 %). In all the other comparisons, there was no statistically significant differences between CA10 and CA50 (p > 0.05). Cells grown on surfaces treated with CA10 were more spread and flatten than in the CA50 specimens. CONCLUSIONS Periodontally compromised roots surfaces conditioned with 10 % citric acid for 90 s resulted in better substrate for hPLF proliferation, in initial periods of culture than 50 % citric acid. The enlargement of the dentinal tubules did not seem to be influenced by the acid concentration.

Abstract
The main treatment of periodontal disease is the mechanical removal of supra and subgingival biofilm. Adjuvant therapies as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) may offer improved clinical and microbiological results. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of toluidine and methylene blue dyes, associated with red laser and LED, on elimination of a suspension of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A.a). Experimental groups (n = 29) consisted of positive (broth) and negative (gentamicin) controls, three different dyes concentrations (0.05; 0.1; 10 mg/ml) alone or associated with laser (660 nm) at two power settings (70 and 100 mW) and LED (627 ± 10 nm). Bacterial suspension received all treatments, and after serial dilutions they were cultured for 24 h in petri dishes for colony forming unit counts. Data were analyzed by ANOVA complemented by Tukey's test (p < 0.05). The results showed that both dyes, at a concentration of 10 mg/ml, alone or associated with laser and LED, caused 100% of death similar to the negative control (p > 0.05). It can be concluded that blue dyes for aPDT, at high concentration (10 mg/ml), are capable of eliminating A.a without adjuvant use of light sources.
