Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the effectiveness of laser therapy for managing patients with orofacial pain (OFP). In addition, to determine which parameters provide the best treatment effects to reduce pain, improve function, and quality of life in adults with OFP. METHODS Systematic review. Searches were conducted in six databases; no date or language restrictions were applied. Studies involving adults with OFP treated with laser therapy were included. The risk of bias (RoB) was performed with the Revised Cochrane RoB-2. A meta-analysis was structured around the OFP type, and outcomes. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) assessed the overall certainty of the evidence. RESULTS Eighty-nine studies were included. Most studies (n = 72, 80.9%) were considered to have a high RoB. The results showed that laser therapy was better than placebo in improving pain, maximal mouth open (MMO), protrusion, and tenderness at the final assessment, but with a low or moderate level of evidence. The best lasers and parameters to reduce pain are diode or gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) lasers, a wavelength of 400-800 or 800-1500 nm, and dosage of <25 J/cm2. CONCLUSIONS Laser therapy was better than placebo to improve pain, MMO, protrusion, and tenderness. Also, it was better than occlusal splint to improve pain, but not better than TENS and medication.Implications for rehabilitationLaser therapy was found to be good in improving pain, maximal mouth opening, jaw protrusion, and tenderness at the end of the treatment.For patients with all types of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) (myogenous, arthrogenous, and mixed), the following lasers and parameters are recommended: diode or gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) laser, wavelength of 400-800 or 800-1500 nm, and a dosage <25 J/cm2.For patients with arthrogenous TMDs, the following lasers and parameters are recommended: Diode laser and a wavelength between 400 and 800 nm.For patients with myogenous TMDs, the following lasers and parameters are recommended: diode laser, wavelength between 800 and 1500 nm, and dosage of <25 J/cm2.For patients with mixed TMDs, the following lasers and parameters are recommended: diode, GaAlAs, or infrared laser, a wavelength of 800-1500 nm, a dosage >100 J/cm2, and an application time between 15 and 30 s or >60 seconds.

Abstract
PURPOSE to investigate the opinion of Brazilian speech-language pathologists on the training, performance, and parameters used for the application of photobiomodulation (PBM) in the vocal clinic. METHODS observational, cross-sectional, and quantitative study, carried out through a web survey hosted on the Google Forms digital platform, composed of questions related to training, professional performance, and knowledge about PBM in the voice area. Twenty-nine speech-language pathologists of both sexes participated. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS all participants knew the theoretical foundations of PBM, and among them, 28 (96.6%) knew its use specifically in the voice area; twenty-five respondents (86.2%) had a device to perform the irradiation, and all of them used it routinely in their clinical practice in voice. The majority (96.6%, 28) participated in a PBM training course, including specific approaches to the voice area. Participants stated that PBM is a resource that can be used in the area of voice to improve performance in sung (86.2%, 25) and spoken (82.8%, 24), in addition to its application in cases of inflammatory processes in the vocal folds (79.3%, 23). As for dosimetry parameters, the most used wavelength was 808 - 830nm (37.9%, 11) and 660/808nm simultaneously (37.9%, 11), with a dose of 3-5 J per point for the patients with inflammatory processes in the vocal folds (51.7%, 15) and 6-9 J (44.8%, 13) per point for patients whose objective was improvement/conditioning. CONCLUSION the study participants demonstrated knowledge and training in PBM and its applicability to the voice area.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Orofacial pain and tensional cephalea were symptoms commonly reported in COVID-19 patients, even after recovery, and were considered chronic pain in these cases. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effect of the application of photobiomodulation with red and infrared lasers applied locally and systemically. METHODS AND ANALYSIS For this purpose, individuals who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and have had a tension headache and/or orofacial pain for more than 3 months will be selected by convenience. The participants will be divided into two different groups: G1-photobiomodulation with red and infrared laser with local application on the pain points (808 nm and 660 nm, 100 mW, 6 J per point) and G2-photobiomodulation with red laser with transcutaneous application on the radial artery (660 nm, 100 mW, 30 minutes). All participants will be treated for a period of 4 weeks, with 8 application sessions. The effects will be measured by means of blood lactate level, Brief Pain Inventory, Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and Cephalea Impact Test. The data will be collected weekly before and after the treatment, and the following tests will be applied: Analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey paired t test, Kruskal-Wallis, or Wilcoxon, according to data distribution. α = 0.05 will be considered as the level of statistical significance. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study was approved by the Research Projects Committee of the Nove de Julho University (approval number 4.673.963). Results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals and events for the scientific and clinical community, and the general public. It is registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov database with the number NCT05430776.

Abstract
Fibrin, derived from proteins involved in blood clotting (fibrinogen and thrombin), is a biopolymer with different applications in the health area since it has hemostasis, biocompatible and three-dimensional physical structure properties, and can be used as scaffolds in tissue regeneration or drug delivery system for cells and/or growth factors. Fibrin alone or together with other biomaterials, has been indicated for use as a biological support to promote the regeneration of stem cells, bone, peripheral nerves, and other injured tissues. In its diversity of forms of application and constitution, there are platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF), fibrin glue or fibrin sealant, and hydrogels. In order to increase fibrin properties, adjuvant therapies can be combined to favor tissue repair, such as photobiomodulation (PBM), by low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or LEDs (Light Emitting Diode). Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate the relationship between PBM and the use of fibrin compounds, referring to the results of previous studies published in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science databases. The descriptors “fibrin AND low-level laser therapy” and “fibrin AND photobiomodulation” were used, without restriction on publication time. The bibliographic search found 44 articles in PubMed/MEDLINE, of which 26 were excluded due to duplicity or being outside the eligibility criteria. We also found 40 articles in Web of Science and selected 1 article, 152 articles in Scopus and no article selected, totaling 19 articles for qualitative analysis. The fibrin type most used in combination with PBM was fibrin sealant, mainly heterologous, followed by PRF or L-PRF. In PBM, the gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) laser prevailed, with a wavelength of 830 nm, followed by 810 nm. Among the preclinical studies, the most researched association of fibrin and PBM was the use of fibrin sealants in bone or nerve injuries; in clinical studies, the association of PBM with medication-related treatments osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Therefore, there is scientific evidence of the contribution of PBM on fibrin composites, constituting a supporting therapy that acts by stimulating cell activity, angiogenesis, osteoblast activation, axonal growth, anti-inflammatory and anti-edema action, increased collagen synthesis and its maturation, as well as biomolecules.

Abstract
Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a rising concern in clinical dentistry that causes pain and discomfort and negatively affects the quality of life of patients. Indian Society of Periodontology conducted a nationwide survey, involving 3000 dentists in December 2020, which revealed significant knowledge gaps regarding DH, viz., under-diagnosis, incorrect differential diagnosis, and treatment strategies/recommendations for the management of DH patients in daily clinical practice. The current paper has been envisioned and conceptualized to update the practicing Indian dentists regarding the so-called enigma of dentistry “Dentin Hypersensitivity,” based on the best available contemporary evidence. An expert panel was constituted comprising 30 subject experts from across the country, which after extensive literature review and group discussions formulated these recommendations. The panel advocated routine screening of all dentate patients for exposed dentin areas and DH to avoid under-diagnosis of the condition and suggested an early preventive management. Consensus guidelines/recommendations for the use of desensitizing agents (DAs) at home, including the use of herbal agents, are also provided within the backdrop of the Indian context. The guidelines recommend that active management of DH shall be accomplished by a combination of at home and in-office therapies, starting with the simplest and cost-effective home use of desensitizing toothpastes. A diagnostic decision tree and a flowchart for application in daily practice are designed to manage the patients suffering from DH or presenting with exposed dentin areas in dentition. Various treatment methods to manage DH have been discussed in the paper, including the insights from previously published treatment guidelines. Further, a novel system of classification of DH patients based on specific case definitions has been developed for the first time. Explicit charts regarding the available treatment options and the chronology of institution of the agent, for the management in different case categories of DH, have been provided for quick reference. The management strategy takes into account a decision algorithm based on hierarchy of complexity of treatment options and intends to improve the quality of life of the patient by long-term maintenance with an innovatively defined triple C's or 3Cs approach.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) with the simultaneous use of red and infrared LEDs on pain and mandibular range of motion in individuals with temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Eighteen participants were randomly allocated to an LED group or control group. The device had 18 red LEDs (660 nm) and 18 infrared LEDs (850 nm), with a total power irradiated of 126 mW and 75.6 J per point. The device was placed in the regions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and masticatory muscles once per day three times per week for 2 weeks. Pain intensity was measured using the visual analog scale (VAS). Mandibular range of motion was determined using digital calipers and considering different conditions (unassisted opening without pain, maximum opening with and without assistance, right and left lateral movements, and protrusion). Evaluations were performed before treatment, immediately after the first LED irradiation session and at the end of six sessions. A significant reduction in pain intensity was found in the LED group at the end of treatment compared to the control group (p < 0.001) as well as in the comparison between the pretreatment and end of treatment evaluations (p < 0.001). Regarding mandibular movements, no statistically significant differences between the LED group and control group were found at the end of treatment for any of the conditions analyzed or in the comparison between the beginning and end of treatment with LED. Photobiomodulation using a cluster with red and infrared LEDs induced a reduction in pain in individuals with temporomandibular disorder but did not alter mandibular range of motion in these individuals. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To critically evaluate the literature and answer the question, "How effective is photobiomodulation treatment on pain control in patients with TMJ disorder?". METHODS PRISMA, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases were used for the personalized search strategy. For risk of bias, Rob 2.0 for randomized clinical trials and ROBINS-I for non-randomized clinical trials were used. RESULTS Eighty-four articles were found and, after removing duplicates, seventy one studies were included for titles and abstracts. For a full reading, 30 articles were selected and, according to the eligibility criteria, 24 remained for qualitative analysis. The studies showed a low risk of bias. Due to the heterogeneity of the studies, it was not possible to perform a meta-analysis. CONCLUSION Photobiomodulation is an effective adjunct for the treatment of temporomandibular disorders, being a less invasive approach, safe, low-cost, and without side effects.

Abstract
This systematic review aimed to compare the efficacy of nonpharmacological therapies for painful temporomandibular joint disorders. The protocol was registered on International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (CRD42020171364). The search was performed on the electronic databases PubMed, Google Scholar, Clinical Trials, and Web of Science. The eligibility criteria were randomized controlled trials in patients diagnosed with painful temporomandibular joint disorders comparing the pain relief between conventional treatment and nonpharmacological therapies such as acupuncture, physiotherapy, low-level laser, and massage. Fourteen articles were included in this review. At the overall bias of the studies included, 71.42% exhibited some concerns and 28.57% had high risk. The efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions was found to be moderate in the short term and variable in the long term for pain reduction in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders. The evidence pointed out that acupuncture, laser therapy, and physiotherapy are potentially useful interventions for pain relief in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders. However, there is a lack of consistency and short-term follow-up in the studies to determine the lasting of such effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervicofacial burn (CB) is a unique type of burn, involving the lateral part of the face, neck and chest region with significant skin contractures. Temporomandibular joint (TJ) pain and orofacial myalgia (OM) are the major problems in physiotherapy context to treat. Laser is commonly used as an adjunct therapy in painful conditions. However, clinical studies are lacking in investigating the effects of gallium-arsenide (Ga-As) super pulsed laser therapy on temporomandibular joint pain and orofacial myalgia following healed cervicofacial burn patients. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of clinical and functional efficacy of Ga-As super pulsed laser therapy on temporomandibular joint pain with orofacial myalgia following healed cervicofacial burn patients. METHODS Through two block random sampling method, the eligible participants were randomized and allocated into active laser (Active-L; n = 18) and placebo laser (Placebo-L; n = 18) groups. The Active-L group received laser treatment and the Placebo-L group received placebo laser effect (inactive laser) with regular physiotherapy care for 3 times in a week for 4 weeks. Primary (pain intensity, pain threshold, pain frequency) and secondary (mouth opening, disability level and quality of life) measures were measured at baseline, after the end 4th week, 8th week and 6 month follow up. RESULTS Baseline subjective and clinical attributes show homogenous presentation among the study groups (p > 0.05). After four weeks of treatment, and at the end of 6 months follow up, the pain intensity, 2.9 (CI 95% 2.80-3.00), pain threshold 19.2 (CI 95% -30.4 to -7.9), pain frequency 3.4 (CI 95% 3.14-3.65), mouth opening, -16.0 (CI 95%-16.5 to -15.4), disability level 11.3 (CI 95%11.14-11.45), and quality of life -31.7 (CI 95%-37.1 to -26.2) showed more improvement (p < 0.001) in Active-L group than Placebo-L group. CONCLUSION The reports of this study proved that, four weeks active laser therapy with regular physiotherapy care has an ideal treatment protocol for temporomandibular joint pain with orofacial myalgia following healed cervicofacial burn. This study also provided a new knowledge for physiotherapists in the field of temporomandibular joint pain rehabilitation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a protocol of photobiomodulation (PBM) with light-emitting diodes (LED) on the clinical risk of bleaching-induced sensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-four volunteers were selected and randomly divided in two groups, placebo (PG) and LED (LG). The LG received PBM irradiation and tooth bleaching, while the PG received tooth bleaching and simulation of the irradiation. The occurrence of painful sensitivity was recorded during the dental bleaching; immediately after bleaching; and 24, 48, and 72 h after tooth bleaching. At the same measurement times, data were collected on the intensity of sensitivity (VAS and NRS scale) and teeth affected by bleaching-induced sensitivity. A questionnaire sought to measure how the painful sensitivity influenced basic daily activities. Tooth color measures were performed using subjective and objective methods. RESULTS LED irradiation decreased the occurrence of sensitivity at all studied evaluation times as well as its intensity, with the exception of the 72-h data when both groups presented no difference. Teeth affected by bleaching-induced sensitivity were significantly greater in the PG. Color measurements presented no differences between the groups in the recently after and later measures. CONCLUSIONS PBM with LED decreases sensitivity risk and sensibility intensity during and after office bleaching and causes no influence on the shade degree of whitening achieved. The decrease in tooth sensitivity provided more comfort and less suffering while drinking. CLINICAL RELEVANCE LED irradiation is a promising intervention in the control of bleaching-induced sensitivity. TRIAL REGISTRATION RBR-7hpfwj. Abstract
PURPOSE Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) causes masticatory muscle pain and mouth opening limitations and affects patients' ability to eat, practice oral health and perform other activities of daily living. Although the benefits of low-energy lasers in treating TMD have been reported, the results vary greatly depending on the equipment used and the energy output. This study systematically evaluated the efficacy of a low-level gallium aluminium arsenide (GaAlAs) laser treatment for TMD with myofascial pain and maxillary pain. METHODS We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published since database inception to April 5, 2020, that compared low-level laser treatment to sham/placebo treatment or no intervention in patients suffering from TMD with myofascial pain. Three reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed the quality of the included studies according to the risk-of-bias tool recommended by the Cochrane Handbook V.5.1.0 (Cochrane Collaboration, London, UK). Then, a meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 and Stata 15.1 software. RESULTS The data from 8 randomized controlled trials including 181 patients were analyzed. The severity of myofascial TMD pain (measured on a visual analogue scale, VAS) at the end of treatment was significantly different between the control laser therapy and the low-level GaAlAs laser therapy (weighted mean difference [WMD] = -0.76, 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.51 to 0.01, P = .046); at 3 to 4 weeks after treatment, there was no significant difference (WMD = 1.24, 95% CI -0.04 to 2.51, P = .057). In addition, there was no significant improvement in maximum mouth opening (MMO) at the end of treatment (WMD = -0.03, 95% CI -4.13 to 4.06, P = .987) or at 3 to 4 weeks after treatment (WMD = 1.22, 95% CI -2.94 to 5.39, P = .565). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that there is insufficient evidence to indicate an efficacy of low-level GaAlAs laser therapy in improving TMD pain and maximal oral opening. These results suggest that clinicians should make appropriate recommendations to inform patient decision-making.

Abstract
Introduction. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are considered multifactorial conditions, thereby with different therapy options, from occlusal equilibration, splint therapy, pharmacotherapy or physical therapy. Among the physical therapies, over the last years, laser therapy and ultrasound therapy have gained attention, as different experimental or clinical studies suggest their efficacy in case of TMDs. The aim of our literature review is to evaluate the available evidence on the effectiveness of laser and ultrasound therapy in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders. Material and method. A research of literature has been performed - articles published over the last 5 years (January 2016 until June 2021) were searched by introducing a combination of different terms, using the Pubmed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases. Results and discussions. A total number of 332 articles was found. For multiple publications regarding the same group of patients, the most recent studies were included. Initial analysis of titles and abstracts eliminated 232 articles, leaving 35 articles whose full text was examined. 20 articles met the inclusion criteria Conclusions. According to the findings of this literature update we can conclude that low level laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, and photobiomodulation may effectively reduce pain for patients suffering of muscular and joint TMDs. However, their effects appear to be only shortly maintained, and only for less complex cases. In addition, it was difficult to compare the studies included, as they do not offer an optimal usage (program, duration of sessions, or number of sessions) of each technique. In this context, we consider that further randomized clinical studies are necessarily to compare each physical technique as well as their synergic effect on the symptoms in case of temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with different wavelengths and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) and explore the optimal wavelength range of laser application in the treatment of pain caused by temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS An electronic search on PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science was undertaken to identify the randomised clinical trials (RCTs) published from database inception to 16 April 2021, aiming to compare the effects of LLLT with different wavelengths (632.8-672 nm, 780-904 nm, and 910-1100 nm) or TENS or placebo group on TMD patients pain reduction. In addition, manual search of the studies was performed. The reviewers assessed the risk of bias of individual studies with the Cochrane risk of bias tool and excluded the RCTs with a high risk of bias in any field. Meanwhile, the reviewers, after performing the network meta-analysis, assessed the quality of evidence, which contributed to network estimate via the GRADE framework. RESULTS Twenty-seven RCTs with 969 patients with TMD were included. In the meta-analysis, all treatment groups showed an overall improvement in pain scores, when compared with the placebo group. LLLT with wavelength ranging from 910 nm to 1100 nm produced more pain relief in the visual analogue scale (VAS) immediately after treatment [mean difference (MD) = 4.68, 95% confidence interval (CI):(3.08,6.28)]. After one-month follow-up, LLLT with wavelength ranging from 910 nm to 1100 nm also showed superior pain-relieving effects [MD = 3.61, 95% CI: (-1.77, 8.99)]. However, no significant difference was observed. Based on the SUCRA ranking, L3 ranked first immediately after treatment and 1 month later. CONCLUSION The results of the meta-analysis showed the LLLT had better short-term efficacy than TENS in the treatment of pain caused by TMD. Better results can be achieved with higher wavelengths. Therefore, we recommended to treat TMD using LLLT with wavelength ranging from 910 nm to 1100 nm.

Abstract
Background Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive and non-pharmacological treatment, which, has shown beneficial results in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) related pain. This systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of photobiomodulation in the treatment of myofascial pain associated with (TMD by analyzing randomized clinical trials published from 2007 to February 2019. The secondary objective of the study was to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis of TMD treatment with photobiomodulation in patients with myofascial pain. Material and Methods International databases were used: Pubmed, Medline and Web of Science; the initial search raised 316 papers, and only 17 papers met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review (SR). Of these, only 04 papers met the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis: VAS data represented by numerical scores and placebo control group. Results As for the wavelength, the most used value was 780nm (followed by 830nm. The most used treatment time was 4 offered treatments for 4 weeks; followed by 10 sessions. Regarding periodicity, 9 studies used 2 times a week. The meta-analysis showed that laser-treated groups had painful symptoms improvement that was superior to the control group (mean difference 1.49;95% CI = -1.67; -1.32). Laser therapy showed a cost-effectiveness of $1,464.28 by controlled pain intensity and placebo showed $2,866.20 by controlled pain intensity. Conclusions The studies were considered to have moderate quality of evidence. Laser-treated groups had painful symptoms improvement that was superior to the control group and photobiomodulation was more cost-effective than placebo in patients with TMD and myofascial pain. Role of Photobiomodulation Therapy in Modulating Oxidative Stress in Temporomandibular Disorders. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Human Randomised Controlled Trials. Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration; ref CRD 42020198921) aimed to govern photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) efficacy in temporomandibular disorder (TMD). PRISMA guidelines and Cochrane Collaboration recommendations were followed. Differences in pain reduction assessment by qualitative measurement with visual analogue scale pain (VAS), pressure threshold (PPT) and maximum mouth opening (MMO) were calculated with 95% confidence intervals and pooled in a random effects model with a subgroup analysis, evaluating the role of follow-up duration. Heterogeneity was analysed using Q and I2 tests. Publication bias was assessed by visual examination of funnel plot symmetry. Qualitative analysis revealed 46% of the 44 included studies showed a high risk of bias. Meta-analysis on 32 out of 44 studies revealed statistically significant intergroup differences (SSID) for VAS (SMD = -0.55; 95% CI = -0.82 to -0.27; Z = 3.90 (p < 0.001)), PPT (SMD = -0.45; 95% CI = -0.89 to 0.00; Z = 1.97 (p = 0.05)) and MMO (SMD = -0.45; 95% CI = -0.89 to 0.00; Z = 1.97 (p = 0.05)), favouring PBMT compared to control treatment strategies. Sensitivity analysis revealed SSID (SMD = -0.53; 95% CI = -0.73 to -0.32; Z = 5.02 (p < 0.0001)) with low heterogeneity (Τ2 = 0.02; χ2 = 16.03 (p = 0.31); I2 = 13%). Hence, this review, for first time, proposed suggested recommendations for PBMT protocols and methodology for future extensive TMD research.

PURPOSE To investigate the influence of photobiomodulation associated with orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) in patients with temporomandibular muscle disorders (TMD). METHODS Randomized, blinded trial clinical study with a sample of eleven women with muscle TMD divided into two groups. The experimental group (EG) consisted of five women submitted to orofacial myofunctional therapy associated with photobiomodulation, and the control group (CG) consisted of six women submitted to orofacial myofunctional therapy associated with inactive photobiomodulation (placebo). The intervention was performed in the following twelve sessions: one evaluation, ten speech therapy sessions associated with photobiomodulation, and one reevaluation. For outcomes, investigation on pain perception using the visual analogue scale (VAS), investigation of palpation sensitivity with the research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD), and quality of life (QOL) verification through oral health impact profile - short form (OHIP-14) were considered. RESULTS The EG increased measurements of mandibular movements of opening and protrusion and improved in the evaluation of QOL. CONCLUSION Orofacial myofunctional therapy, when associated with photobiomodulation, contributed to increase the range of mandibular movements, with important improvements in the perception of quality of life and with significant improvement in the painful conditions of volunteers with TMD.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Purpose: to conduct a literature review on the therapeutic effects of photobiomodulation applicable to speech-language-hearing therapy. Methods: the databases searched were the Cochrane Library, Virtual Health Library, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) via PubMed, and Web of Science/ISI.The selected articles were original ones whose abstracts were available and that evaluated the therapeutic effect of photobiomodulation in situations related to speech-language-hearing practice. Results: the sample comprised 23 articles, most of them being indexed in PubMed. The fields of health with the largest number of publications were Physical Therapy and Medicine. The sample size ranged from1 to 99 people, aged 15 to 77 years, and the most applied wavelength was the infrared one. Most of the studies had positive photobiomodulation application results - although in a few publications the effects of this treatment modality were assessed in a combination with rehabilitation exercises. Conclusion: photobiomodulation benefits different disorders treated by speech-language-hearing therapists, however, there is a broad methodological diversity, lacking specific protocols for the ideal dosimetry for each disorder.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Purpose: to know the profile of Brazilian speech-language-hearing (SLH) therapists and their level of information on the use of low-level laser photobiomodulation. Methods: an observational, cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted with a self-administered online questionnaire related to the professional education, work, and knowledge of SLH therapists on low-level laser photobiomodulation. Two hundred sixty-one speech-language-hearing therapists of both sexes participated in the research. The data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: the speech-language-hearing therapists had graduated predominantly 10 to 20 years before, their highest degree was mainly specialization, and most of them worked in the fields of oral-motor functions, dysphagia, voice, language, and audiology. Most of them knew photobiomodulation and its use in SLH therapists; also, they agreed on using a low-level laser as a therapeutic resource. Even so, most did not use it in clinical practice, although those who did, reported greater patient adherence. Statistical significance was verified for the association between laser use and access to resolution number 541 of the Federal Speech-Language-Hearing Council, time in the profession, main specialization, and required qualification. Conclusion: the participating speech-language-hearing therapists showed knowledge on low-level laser photobiomodulation and its applicability. However, most of these professionals did not use the resource yet.

Abstract
Several studies have investigated the possible influence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) on body posture and whether cervical spine disorders, such as cervicogenic dizziness (CGD) could play an additional role in affecting static balance. The purpose of this study was to analyze static postural behavior by means of static posturography, in patients affected by either TMD or CGD alone or by both conditions, and to compare findings with a group of healthy subjects. Significant changes in posturographic parameters were found among the three groups of patients and when compared with controls. When the three study groups were compared to each other, subjects affected by a combination of TMD and CGD showed worse postural performances with respect to subjects affected by CGD or TMD alone. Correlations with self-perceived dizziness, anxiety, depression and jaw functionality, investigated by means of validated questionnaires, were found among all patient groups. These results provide new evidences for the presence of static balance alterations in patients suffering from TMD with and without associated cervical spine impairment, by using a reliable diagnostic technique. Further studies are needed in order to identify any causal relation between these two disorders.

Abstract
Though dentin hypersensitivity (DHS) is one of the most common complaints from patients in dental clinics, there are no universally accepted guidelines for differential diagnosis as well as selection of reliable treatment modalities for this condition. The neurosensory mechanisms underlying DHS remain unclear, but fluid movements within exposed dentinal tubules, i.e., the hydrodynamic theory, has been a widely accepted explanation for DHS pain. As several dental conditions have symptoms that mimic DHS at different stages of their progression, diagnosis and treatment of DHS are often confusing, especially for inexperienced dental practitioners. In this paper we provide an up-to-date review on risk factors that play a role in the development and chronicity of DHS and summarize the current principles and strategies for differential diagnosis and management of DHS in dental practices. We will outline the etiology, predisposing factors and the underlying putative mechanisms of DHS, and provide principles and indications for its diagnosis and management. Though desensitization remains to be the first choice for DHS for many dental practitioners and most of desensitizing agents reduce the symptoms of DHS by occluding patent dentinal tubules, the long-term outcome of such treatment is uncertain. With improved understanding of the underlying nociceptive mechanisms of DHS, it is expected that promising novel therapies will emerge and provide more effective relief for patients with DHS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the cervical range of motion (CROM) and clinical parameters in patients affected by myogenous temporomandibular disorders (TMD), cervicogenic dizziness (CGD), both TMD and CGD (TMD/CGD), and a group of healthy subjects (HS). METHODS CROM degrees, Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-17), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Jaw Functional Limitation Scale 20 (JFLS-20) scores were compared between 46 TMD patients, 49 CGD subjects, 43 TMD/CGD patients, and 98 HS. RESULTS TMD/CGD and CGD patients demonstrated significantly lower CROM degrees and higher DHI, TSK-17, and HADS values when compared to TMD patients. TMD/CGD and TMD patients demonstrated higher JFLS-20 values when compared to CGD and HS. Significant negative correlations were found in TMD/CGD and TMD patients between JFLS-20 and CROM in flexion and extension. DISCUSSION Present findings demonstrated a relation between spine movement impairment and TMD.

Abstract
Objective: We evaluated the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM), mandibular advancement (MA), and the combination of both treatments (PBM+MA) on condylar growth, by the analysis of cartilage and bone formation, fibrillar collagen deposition, proteoglycan content, cell proliferation, and clastic cell index (CCI). Methods: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to CONTROL, PBM, positive control-MA, and PBM+MA groups. The appliance was worn 10 h/day. Laser was irradiated bilaterally on mandibular condyles in 8 alternate days (1 irradiation point per condyle) using the following parameters: 780 nm, 10 J/cm2, 40 mW, 1 W/cm2, 10 sec/point, 0.4 J/point, and cumulative dose per point: 3.2 J. PBM+MA received both treatments simultaneously. After 15 days, the animals were euthanized and the condyles dissected and embedded in paraffin. Histological sections from the intermediate portion of the condyle were used for morphometric analysis. The relative frequency (%) of fibrillar collagens was determined in sections stained with picrosirius red-hematoxylin under polarized light or Gömöri's method for reticular fibers. Proteoglycan content was evaluated by computerized photocolorimetric analysis. CCI was determined by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results: PBM and MA influenced condylar cartilage thickeness and matrix deposition, but none of the treatments affected significantly the area of the condyle. CCI were not influenced by the treatments, but clastic cells distribution was influenced by MA and PBM+MA treatments. There was no significant difference in proliferating cells among the groups. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that PBM and MA stimulates matrix deposition and cartilage thickening in the mandibular condyle, but was not able to demonstrate a synergistic effect between the treatments. Additional studies should be conducted to evaluate the possible synergistic effect between PBM and MA.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is considered the main cause of orofacial pain of non-dental origin, and a public health problem. The symptomatology is muscular and/or articular pain, restriction of the mandibular range of motion, and changes in the mandibular movement pattern. Due to its complexity there are already treatments using various forms of therapy. Photobiomodulation using light sources, such as low-level laser or light emitting diodes (LED), with different wavelengths, in a single or combined form, allows one more therapeutic resource to be explored. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation with the simultaneous use of red and infrared LEDs, on pain, range of mandibular movements, and on the electrical activity of masticatory muscles in individuals with TMD. METHODS A randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial is proposed, which will involve 33 individuals (n = 11 per group) of both sexes, ages 18 to 45 years in 3 groups: LED group; placebo group; and control group, submitted to 6 non-consecutive sessions of photobiomodulation totaling 2 weeks of treatment. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders-RDC/TMD will be used to assess and determine the participants' TMD. The pain will be assessed using the Visual Analog Scale - VAS, the mandibular range of motion will be determined with the aid of a digital caliper, and the electrical activity of the masticatory muscles will be verified by electromyography. A mixed plate of 18 red LEDs-660 nm and 18 infrared LEDs-850 nm with power of 3.5 mW per LED, 4.45 mW/cm, radiant exposure of 5.35 J/cm, will be used for photobiomodulation. The irradiated area will be 14.13 cm, and energy of 75.6 J, in the TMJ region and in the bilateral masseter and temporal muscles. Participants from all groups will be reassessed after the first therapeutic intervention, and at the end of treatment. DISCUSSION We expect the use of photobiomodulation with LEDs, infra and red, to reduce pain, improve temporomandibular joint function in patients with TMD, and thus improve the general conditions of the patient.
