Dual-Responsive PIL Films with Gold Nanoparticles: Tailoring Electrical Responses to pH and Thermal Stimuli

In recent years, stimuli-responsive poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) have attracted great attention. The stimuli-dependent properties, particularly the electrical properties, of multiresponsive PILs incorporating functionalized nanoparticles, however, have been less investigated. In this work, we present the synthesis, characterization, and application of PIL films incorporating pH- and thermoresponsive hybrid materials composed of gold nanoparticles functionalized with poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (Au@PDMAEMA). The Au@PDMAEMA nanoparticles exhibit distinct responsiveness to changes in environmental pH and temperature, thereby altering the electrical properties of the PIL films blended with responsive gold nanoparticles (PIL w/Au). This research not only fills a gap in the study of electrical properties of multiresponsive nanoparticle-incorporated PILs but also extends the potential applications of PILs in various fields, including smart sensors and electronic devices.

In Situ Fabrication of Silver Nanoparticle-Decorated Polymeric Vesicles for Antibacterial Applications

Silver/polymeric vesicle composite nanoparticles with good antibacterial properties were fabricated in this study. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared in situ on cross-linked vesicle membranes through the reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) via coordination bonding between the Ag+ ions and the nitrogen atoms on the vesicles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirmed the formation of AgNPs on the vesicles. The antibacterial test demonstrated good antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) for the produced AgNP-decorated vesicles. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the AgNP-decorated vesicles for E. coli and S. aureus were 8.4 and 9.6 μg/mL, respectively. Cell viability analysis on the A549 cells indicated that the toxicity was low when the AgNP concentrations did not exceed the MIC values, and the wound healing test confirmed the good antibacterial properties of the AgNP-decorated vesicles.

Design of Microstructure-Engineered Polymers for Energy and Environmental Conservation

With the ever-growing demand for sustainability, designing polymeric materials using readily accessible feedstocks provides potential solutions to address the challenges in energy and environmental conservation. Complementing the prevailing strategy of varying chemical composition, engineering microstructures of polymer chains by precisely controlling their chain length distribution, main chain regio-/stereoregularity, monomer or segment sequence, and architecture creates a powerful toolbox to rapidly access diversified material properties. In this Perspective, we lay out recent advances in utilizing appropriately designed polymers in a wide range of applications such as plastic recycling, water purification, and solar energy storage and conversion. With decoupled structural parameters, these studies have established various microstructure-function relationships. Given the progress outlined here, we envision that the microstructure-engineering strategy will accelerate the design and optimization of polymeric materials to meet sustainability criteria.

Application of Recently used Green Solvents in Sample Preparation Techniques: A Comprehensive Review of Existing Trends, Challenges, and Future Opportunities

Green solvents (GSs) has gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential as safer and more sustainable alternatives to traditional organic solvents. Solvents are used in a wide range of applications, from industrial processes to everyday products. Solvent emissions and losses can have a significant impact on the environment and human health, which is why many initiatives are being undertaken to get rid of or switch to eco-friendly alternatives. A key area of green chemistry that led to the concept of "green" solvents is the development of alternative solvents that are less toxic and more environmentally friendly than traditional organic solvents. The advantages of using green solvents over conventional ones are their environmental friendliness, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and simplicity of preparation. Different sample preparation techniques have successfully utilized green solvents to offer a sustainable separation media for the extraction of a variety of inorganic and organic compounds which are crucial for research in environmental samples. Recent developments in green analytical chemistry (GAC) have focused on how to prepare and use samples using environmentally sustainable solvents. The current study covers the advance and currently used green solvents with an emphasis on environmentally friendly sample preparation methods. This review aims to briefly summarize the current state of knowledge about the use of green solvents particularly ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents and switchable solvents (SSs) with the perspective of GAC in sample preparation methods.

Direct electrochemistry of covalently immobilized hemoglobin on a naphthylimidazolium butyric acid ionic liquid/MWCNT matrix

Monitoring the concentration levels of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is significant in both clinical and industrial applications. Herein, we develop a facile biosensor for the detection of H₂O₂ based on direct electron transfer of hemoglobin (Hb), which was covalently immobilized on a hydrophobic naphthylimidazolium butyric acid ionic liquid (NIBA-IL) over a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain an Hb/NIBA-IL/MWCNT/GCE. Highly water-soluble Hb protein was firmly immobilized on NIBA-IL via stable amide bonding between the free NH₂ groups of Hb and COOH groups of NIBA-IL via EDC/NHS coupling. Thus fabricated biosensor showed a well resolved redox peak with a cathodic peak potential (E_pc) at -0.35 V and anodic peak potential (E_pa) at -0.29 V with a formal potential (E°') of -0.32 V, which corresponds to the deeply buried Fe^III/Fe^II redox centre of Hb, thereby direct electrochemistry of Hb was established. Further, the modified electrode demonstrated very good electrocatalytic activity towards H₂O₂ reduction and showed a wide linear range of detection from 0.01 to 6.3 mM with a limit of detection and sensitivity of 3.2 μM and 111 μA mM^-1 cm^-2, respectively. Moreover, the developed biosensor displayed high operational stability under dynamic conditions as well as during continuous potential cycles and showed reliable reproducibility. The superior performance of the fabricated biosensor is attributed to the effective covalent immobilization of Hb on the newly developed highly conducting and biocompatible NIBA-IL/MWCNT/GCE platform.

Rhodol-conjugated polymersome sensor for visual and highly-sensitive detection of hydrazine in aqueous media

Hydrazine is a hazardous environmental pollutant, which contaminates land, air and water posturing a severe risk to human health. For the first-hand estimation, a qualitative approach (colorimetric) for recognition of hydrazine could suffice. However, for accurate measurement, under the threshold limit value (TLV), a quantitative technique is desired. We report the polymersome-based sensor for visual detection and quantification of hydrazine in water. The rhodol-functionalized amphiphilic hyperbranched multiarm copolymer (HSP-RDL) was self-assembled into vesicles. The HSP-RDL vesicle probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for hydrazine recognition in presence of various competitive species such as cations, anions, and neutral species. The fast responsive pink color change from colorless could be visualized with naked eye due to spirolactone ring opening by hydrazinolysis triggered strong fluorescence emission. The vesicle probe could detect hydrazine in water with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 2 nM (0.0652 ppb), which is lower than TLV (10 ppb) given by USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency). Furthermore, the vesicle probe could quantify hydrazine (recovery ≥ 99 %) in a wastewater sample collected from Huangpu river. The membrane-permeable characteristics of HSP-RDL led hydrazine detection in live cells through confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Shape Transformations of Vesicles Self-Assembled from Amphiphilic Hyperbranched Multiarm Copolymers via Simulation

The understanding of shape transformations of vesicles is of fundamental importance in biological and clinical sciences. Hyperbranched polymer vesicles (branched polymersomes) are newly emerging polymer vesicles with special structure and property. They have also been regarded as a good model for biomembranes. However, the shape transformations of hyperbranched polymer vesicles have not been studied from either an experimental or theoretical level. Herein, the shape transformations of vesicles self-assembled from amphiphilic hyperbranched multiarm copolymers (HMCs) in response to the interaction parameters between the hydrophobic core and hydrophilic arms and the polymer concentrations are investigated carefully through dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. In the morphological phase diagram, two types of vesicles are obtained: one type corresponds to vesicles without holes formed at low concentrations including unilamellar vesicles, double-lamellar vesicles, discocyte-shaped vesicles, and tubular vesicles, and the other type corresponds to vesicles with holes formed at high concentrations including stomatocyte-shaped vesicles, toroidal vesicles, genus-3 (G-3) toroidal vesicles with three holes, and genus-4 (G-4) toroidal vesicles with four holes. In addition, both the self-assembly mechanisms and the dynamics for the formation of these vesicles have been systematically studied. The current work will offer theoretical support for fabricating novel vesicles with various shapes from hyperbranched polymers.

Hyperbranched Multiarm Copolymers with a UCST Phase Transition: Topological Effect and the Mechanism

A novel thermoresponsive hyperbranched multiarm copolymer with a hydrophobic hyperbranched poly[3-ethyl-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxetane] core and many poly(acrylamide- co-acrylonitrile) (P(AAm- co-AN)) arms was for the first time synthesized through a reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization. These copolymers show reversible, sharp, and controlled temperature-responsive phase transitions at the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in water and electrolyte solution. It is the first report on the hyperbranched copolymers with a UCST transition. Two series copolymers with variable AN content (series A) and variable arm length (series B) were synthesized to study the influence of molecular structure on the UCST transition. It was found that the UCST of copolymers could be raised by increasing the AN content or decreasing the arm length. Most interestingly, the amplification effect of the hyperbranched topological structure leads to a broad change of the UCST from 33.2 to 65.2 °C with the little change of AN content (5.9%). On the basis of variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy, a UCST transition mechanism, in combination with hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance and multimicelle aggregate (MMA), was proposed. This work enriches the UCST copolymer topology and may extend the knowledge on the structure-activity relationship as well as the mechanism of the UCST polymers.

Triple Noncovalent-Interaction-Containing Supramolecular Polymer Vesicle Chemosensors with Dynamically Tunable Detection Ranges

Chemosensors (CSs) with dynamically tunable detection ranges have important significance for their expansion in practical applications; however, most CSs possess an unchangeable detection limit. In this work, we report the first example of a supramolecular polymer vesicle (SPV) chemosensor with a dynamically tunable detection range. SPVs containing porphyrin (PP) moieties and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/azobenzene (Azo) host-guest interactions were first constructed. The obtained SPVs were used to detect Zn²⁺ with a high selectivity and sensitivity over a wide detection limit range of 8.67×10^-9 to 1.99×10^-11 under UV light irradiation. The corresponding sensing mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effects of the triple noncovalent interactions, including the metal-ligand coordination of PP/Zn²⁺ and the double host-guest interactions of β-CD/Azo and β-CD/PP.

Polymersome–hydrogel composites with combined quick and long-term antibacterial activities

Intrinsically antibacterial polymersomes loaded with antibiotics were incorporated into hydrogels, exhibiting quick and long-acting antibacterial activity.

Asymmetric Polymersomes from an Oil-in-Oil Emulsion: A Computer Simulation Study

Asymmetric vesicles are valuable for understanding and mimicking cell and practical biomedicine applications. Recently, a very straightforward methodology for fabricating asymmetric polymersome was developed by Lodge's group through the coassembly of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) and polybutadiene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PB-b-PEO) block copolymers at the interface of a polystyrene/polybutadiene/chloroform (PS/PB/CHCl₃) emulsion. However, the in-depth microscopic mechanism for the formation of asymmetric polymersomes remains unclear. To address this issue, in this article, the coassembly process for the formation of the asymmetric polymersomes in Asano's experimental system was systematically investigated by employing a dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation. Our results definitely demonstrate the formation of the asymmetric polymersomes such as that in the experiments and that the bilayer formed through the folding and crossing of the PEO blocks. Besides, from the microscopic view, three stages can be discerned in the formation process: (1) the formation of micelles, (2) the micelle diffusion to the interface, and (3) the micelle rearrangement at the interface to form an asymmetric polymersome. Meanwhile, the incompatibility among PS, PB, and PEO is proven to be the main driving force for asymmetric polymersome formation. Moreover, the effects of the order of addition of copolymers and the volume fraction of PEO blocks on the structure of the asymmetric polymersomes are also investigated. We find that the formation process is affected severely by the order of addition, and adding PS-b-PEO first can make the asymmetric bilayer more perfect. Not only that, but perfect asymmetric polymersomes can be formed only when the volume fraction of PEO (f_PEO) is greater than 0.55. We believe the present work can extend the knowledge of the self-assembly of asymmetric polymersomes, especially with respect to the self-assembly mechanism.

A dissipative particle dynamics simulation study on phase diagrams for the self-assembly of amphiphilic hyperbranched multiarm copolymers in various solvents

Self-assembly of amphiphilic hyperbranched multiarm copolymers (HMCs) has shown great potential for preparing all kinds of delicate supramolecular structures in all scales and dimensions in solution. However, theoretical studies on the influencing factors for the self-assembly of HMCs have been greatly lagging behind. The phase diagram of HMCs in selective solvents is very necessary but has not been disclosed up to now. Here, the self-assembly of HMCs with different hydrophilic fractions in various solvents was studied systematically by using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. Three morphological phase diagrams are constructed and a rich variety of morphologies, ranging from spherical micelles, worm-like micelles, membranes, vesicles, vesosomes, small micellar aggregates (SMAs), and aggregates of spherical and worm-like micelles to helical micelles, are obtained. In addition, both the self-assembly mechanisms and the dynamic processes for the formation of these self-assemblies have been systematically investigated. The simulation results are consistent with available experimental observations. Besides, several novel structures, like aggregates of spherical and worm-like micelles, vesosomes and helical micelles, are firstly discovered for HMC self-assembly. We believe the current work will extend the knowledge on the self-assembly of HMCs, especially on the control of supramolecular structures and on fabricating novel self-assemblies.
