A New Evaluation Criterion for Optimizing the Mechanical Properties of Toughened Polypropylene/Silica Nanocomposites

Real-time H 2 S detection kit for hydrogen fuel cell

Among hydrogen technologies, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is known as an efficient device using hydrogen as the fuel. Although different real-time fault-diagnosis methods are available (i.e., voltage-based or electrochemical-based), the problem with these methods is their dependency on being directly connected to a computer, higher costs, lower security, and the need to perform the tests in a laboratory. The focus and the solution of this study are to propose a novel design of printed circuit board (PCB) that enables the implementation of the required sensors to detect/measure the operational parameters/contamination of PEMFC. The communication of the considered PCB will be with a server without direct contact through the Internet of Things (IoT). A specified computer. exe file has also been developed to directly connect to a personalized network hotspot (to increase security) and enable the wireless communication of the sensor and the computer. The outputs of this study can be considered a novel fault diagnosis kit that measuresH 2 S wirelessly using IoT. To verify the result 11 ppm and 12 ppm ofH 2 S was injected into the system, the IoT kit's measured data is compared with the experiments. The results comparison validated the suitability of the system.

Manufacturing protocol and post processing of ultra-thin gas diffusion layer using advanced scanning techniques

The typical commercial size of a Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) application is around 180 μm up to 290 μm. GDL facilitates the diffusion of reactants to the catalyst layers and liquid removal from the membrane to the flow field. In this regard, GDL should be a porous region with conductive materials as thin as possible to reduce the size and the costs. Lowering the thickness of the GDL also results in better performance of the stack since it increases the speed of reactants to reach the catalysts. However, the main obstacle is the formation of ultra-thin porous GDL, which can be also named as standalone microporous layer (MPL). The novelty of this study is the manufacturing process and production of ultra-thin porous GDL with carbon and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as the main materials. The produced GDL has the thickness of 28.9 μm, which has been measured using microscope imaging. This novel GDL can be used as the conductive diffusive region inside the PEM fuel cells, Alkaline fuel cells, and the cathode of PEM and Alkaline electrolyzers. Additionally, the novel invention can be considered as a 2D membrane for carbon capture purposes after being functionalized.

Quantitative measurement and comparison of breakthroughs inside the gas diffusion layer using lattice Boltzmann method and computed tomography scan

In Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs), the presence of residual water within the Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) poses challenges during cold starts and accelerates degradation. A computational model based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) was developed to consider the capillary pressure inside the PEMFC and to analyze the exact geometries of the GDLs, which were obtained using the Computed Tomography scan. The novelty of this study is to suggest a methodology to compare the quantitative water removal performance of the GDLs without long-term experimental testing. Two different samples of GDLs were considered, pristine and aged. The results of quantitative measurements revealed the amount of water columns (breakthroughs) inside each sample. Considering the volume of 12,250,000 µm3 for each sample, the pristine and the aged samples are prone to have 774,200 µm3 (6.32%) and 1,239,700 µm3 (10.12%) as water columns in their porous domain. Micro-structural properties such as connectivity, mean diameter, effective diffusivity, etc. were also compared to observe the impacts of aging on the properties of the GDL.

Durable PP/EPDM/GF/SiO2 nanocomposites with improved strength and toughness for orthotic applications

Ankle-foot orthotics need ideal specification of being light-weight, high strength, tough, stiff, and durable. Reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites with enhanced mechanical properties are the most favorable materials being used in this field, but still, it is challenging to achieve balanced blend of strength and toughness in the composites. The present study thus aims to achieve the challenging task of simultaneous improvement in stiffness and toughness in reinforced PP composites exploring the synergistic reinforcement effect of glass fibers (GFs) and nano silica (SiO2) as multiscale fillers and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) as impact modifier. EPDM is used as toughness modifier, addressing the brittle behavior, but at the cost of the strength of the polymer. Combined use of micro and nanofillers as reinforcement in toughened polypropylene provides a potential approach to balance the strength while maintaining the toughness. GFs could offer high strength and nanofillers offer ductile fracture to the material. PP, PP/GF, PP/EPDM/GF composites and PP/EPDM/GF/SiO2 nanocomposites are fabricated through melt blending technique and are characterized through SEM, mechanical evaluation, nanoindentation and dynamic mechanical analysis. Mechanical properties are evaluated in accordance with ASTM standards. PP/EPDM/GF/SiO2 nanocomposites exhibits remarkable enhancement in Tensile strength, tensile modulus, impact strength and percent elongation at break by 49 MPa (55% increase over PP), 2450 MPa (145% increase), 145 J/m (13% increase) and 156% (160% increase) respectively. The exceptional improvement in reduced modulus and hardness reveals good interfacial properties. Loss factor decrement reveals elastic behavior of nanocomposites suitable for thermoforming of nanocomposites for orthotic device fabrication.

Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Fibers: Controllable Architectures for Electrochemical Energy Applications

Organic/inorganic hybrid fibers (OIHFs) are intriguing materials, possessing an intrinsic high specific surface area and flexibility coupled to unique anisotropic properties, diverse chemical compositions, and controllable hybrid architectures. During the last decade, advanced OIHFs with exceptional properties for electrochemical energy applications, including possessing interconnected networks, abundant active sites, and short ion diffusion length have emerged. Here, a comprehensive overview of the controllable architectures and electrochemical energy applications of OIHFs is presented. After a brief introduction, the controllable construction of OIHFs is described in detail through precise tailoring of the overall, interior, and interface structures. Additionally, several important electrochemical energy applications including rechargeable batteries (lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and lithium-sulfur batteries), supercapacitors (sandwich-shaped supercapacitors and fiber-shaped supercapacitors), and electrocatalysts (oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, and hydrogen evolution reaction) are presented. The current state of the field and challenges are discussed, and a vision of the future directions to exploit OIHFs for electrochemical energy devices is provided.
