Egg dispersion is more important than competition type for herbivores attacked by a parasitoid

Impact of a nonnative parasitoid species on intraspecific interference and offspring sex ratio

In an assemblage of multiple predators sharing a single prey species, the combined effects of the component species may scale unpredictably because of emergent interspecific interactions. Prior studies suggest that chaotic but persistent community dynamics are induced by intra-/interspecific interactions between native and nonnative parasitoids competing over a shared host. Here, we test the impact of the nonnative parasitoid Heterospilus prosopidis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on the intraspecific interference and offspring sex ratio of the native parasitoid Anisopteromalus calandrae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). We found that the nonnative parasitoid reduced intraspecific interference among native parasitoids and decreased the proportion of female offspring produced by the native parasitoid (predicted under conditions of reduced host availability). At higher host densities, the nonnative parasitoid contributed less to the total proportion of hosts parasitized, as its innate saturating Type II response changed to a dome-shaped Type IV response with increasing density of the native parasitoid, while the native parasitoid retained its increasing Type I response. This inverse host-density-dependent response between the two parasitoids and associated competitive superiority can explain the observed changes in parasitism; at high host densities, the searching efficiency of the native parasitoid increases via host feeding while the nonnative parasitoid experiences egg limitation. These results highlight the importance of the complementary top-down effects of multiple consumers on a single resource.

Evolution of larval competitiveness and associated life-history traits in response to host shifts in a seed beetle

Resource competition is frequently strong among parasites that feed within small discrete resource patches, such as seeds or fruits. The properties of a host can influence the behavioural, morphological and life-history traits of associated parasites, including traits that mediate competition within the host. For seed parasites, host size may be an especially important determinant of competitive ability. Using the seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus, we performed replicated, reciprocal host shifts to examine the role of seed size in determining larval competitiveness and associated traits. Populations ancestrally associated with either a small host (mung bean) or a large one (cowpea) were switched to each other's host for 36 generations. Compared to control lines (those remaining on the ancestral host), lines switched from the small host to the large host evolved greater tolerance of co-occurring larvae within seeds (indicated by an increase in the frequency of small seeds yielding two adults), smaller egg size and higher fecundity. Each change occurred in the direction predicted by the traits of populations already adapted to cowpea. However, we did not observe the expected decline in adult mass following the shift to the larger host. Moreover, lines switched from the large host (cowpea) to the small host (mung bean) did not evolve the predicted increase in larval competitiveness or egg size, but did exhibit the predicted increase in body mass. Our results thus provide mixed support for the hypothesis that host size determines the evolution of competition-related traits of seed beetles. Evolutionary responses to the two host shifts were consistent among replicate lines, but the evolution of larval competition was asymmetric, with larval competitiveness evolving as predicted in one direction of host shift, but not the reverse. Nevertheless, our results indicate that switching hosts is sufficient to produce repeatable and rapid changes in the competition strategy and fitness-related traits of insect populations.

Global genetic differentiation in a cosmopolitan pest of stored beans: effects of geography, host-plant usage and anthropogenic factors

Genetic differentiation can be promoted allopatrically by geographic isolation of populations due to limited dispersal ability and diversification over time or sympatrically through, for example, host-race formation. In crop pests, the trading of crops across the world can lead to intermixing of genetically distinct pest populations. However, our understanding of the importance of allopatric and sympatric genetic differentiation in the face of anthropogenic genetic intermixing is limited. Here, we examined global sequence variation in two mitochondrial and one nuclear genes in the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus that uses different legumes as hosts. We analyzed 180 samples from 42 populations of this stored bean pest from tropical and subtropical continents and archipelagos: Africa, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, Oceania and South America. For the mitochondrial genes, there was weak but significant genetic differentiation across continents/archipelagos. Further, we found pronounced differentiation among subregions within continents/archipelagos both globally and within Africa but not within Asia. We suggest that multiple introductions into Asia and subsequent intermixing within Asia have generated this pattern. The isolation by distance hypothesis was supported globally (with or without continents controlled) but not when host species was restricted to cowpeas Vigna unguiculata, the ancestral host of C. maculatus. We also document significant among-host differentiation both globally and within Asia, but not within Africa. We failed to reject a scenario of a constant population size in the recent past combined with selective neutrality for the mitochondrial genes. We conclude that mitochondrial DNA differentiation is primarily due to geographic isolation within Africa and to multiple invasions by different alleles, followed by host shifts, within Asia. The weak inter-continental differentiation is most likely due to frequent inter-continental gene flow mediated by human crop trade.
