Foraging efficiency of Akodon azarae under different plant cover and resource levels

Activity patterns and behavior of Myocastor coypus in a gated community in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Anthropization processes confront local wildlife with a new set of conditions that may lead to local extinctions or allow the expansion of some species. This is what happens with the coypu (Myocastor coypus) in gated communities in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires (Argentina), where its rapid population growth results in continuous conflicts with the local inhabitants. The aim of this study was to document the daily and seasonal activity patterns and behavior of the coypu in an urban landscape within their natural distribution range. To achieve this, we conducted a camera-trap survey within areas occupied by the species from February to November 2018. The coypu activity was mainly crepuscular and nocturnal with variations between seasons. We found that the seasons with the greatest activity patterns overlap were winter and autumn (84%), while the least overlap was observed between summer and winter (53%). During the active periods, time spent on foraging behavior was dominant. Time dedicated to vigilance was greater in summer than in winter. This result, alongside an increase in nocturnal activity during summer, shows that coypu in this urban landscape shift its behavior when exposed to an increasing human activity. This study brings up more ecological data of this species, which is key to find alternative control methods within gated communities to lead to a harmonic relationship between inhabitants and the species in its native distribution.

Small rodent species on pig and dairy farms: habitat selection and distribution

BACKGROUND

Rodent species are common in livestock production systems, and some of them are considered serious pests because of the sanitary problems and economic losses they cause. Information about microhabitat selection by rodent species in livestock production systems is necessary for understanding rodent requirements and to contribute to effective prevention and development of control measures for pest rodent species. In this work we study microhabitat selection by rodent species that inhabit pig and dairy farms in central Argentina. Rodent trapping was conducted over three years (2008-2011) on 18 livestock farms, each one sampled seasonally during one year. To study habitat selection, microhabitat characterizations were performed describing 22 environmental variables in captured sites and random trap sites without captures.

RESULTS

With a trapping effort of 7333 Sherman and 7026 cage live trap-nights, 444 rodents of seven species were captured (including the murine pest species Rattus norvegicus, R. rattus and Mus musculus and four native species). The three murines selected characteristics related to building structure and/or to food sources availability/proximity, while Akodon azarae selected sites with tall herbatious vegetation.

CONCLUSIONS

We identified microhabitat characteristics that explain habitat distribution of small rodent species in these complex farm systems. This study contributes to broaden the integrated pest management of rodent pest species and could also contribute to the reduction of the use of rodenticides in these systems. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Foraging activity of commensal Mus musculus in semi-captivity conditions. Effect of predator odours, previous experience and moonlight

BACKGROUND

Mus musculus is a pest in urban and rural habitats where it consumes and contaminates food and may transmit diseases to human and domestic animals. Its control by anticoagulants is partially effective because of aversive behaviours and resistance. In this context, we wanted to assess the potential of the use of predator odours as repellents in experimental feeding trials using urine and faeces of domestic cats and faeces of geoffroyi cat, a wild small felid that is one of the main rodent predators in the study area. We also assessed the effect of previous experience and moonlight on foraging activity.

RESULTS

We did not find an aversive response to cat odours in Mus musculus individuals. There was a trend to consume food in the same feeding stations over time, and the visit rate was lower in periods with high moonlight than in periods with low moonlight.

CONCLUSIONS

Predator odours did not seem to be useful as rodent repellents, but maintaining illumination may lower rodent foraging activity. As rodents maintain their feeding sites over time, toxic baits may be more efficiently placed at sites previously known to be used by rodents.
