African jewel fish (Hemichromis bimaculatus) distinguish individual faces based on their unique iridophore patterns

Previous research has shown that African jewel fish (Hemichromis bimaculatus) recognize pair-bonded mates during their exchanges of egg-guarding duties. The current research examined the perceptual cues for face recognition by comparing two face models displaying anatomically realistic arrangements of blue iridophores derived from discriminant function analysis of distinct sibling groups. Four groups each consisting of 9 subadults were examined using a narrow compartment restraining lateral movement where face models were presented at eye level for eight trials. Because respiratory movement of the operculum can mechanically displace the eye thereby shifting the retinal image, jewel fish reduce their respiration rate during increased attention. When two experimental groups were presented with the same face models on four trials following initial model presentations, both groups exhibited stable respiration rates indicative of model habituation. When the habituated face models were switched to novel face models on the fifth trial, the rates of respiration decreased as measured by reliable increases in the elapsed times of opercular beats. Switching the models back to the habituated models on the sixth trial caused reliable decreases in the elapsed times of opercular beats, resembling the earlier trials for the habituated models. Switching the face models again to the formerly novel models on the seventh trial produced respiration rates that resembled those of the habituated models. The two control groups viewing the same models for all eight trials exhibited no substantial change in respiration rates. Together, these findings indicate that jewel fish can learn to recognize novel faces displaying unique arrangements of iridorphores after one trial of exposure.

Multi-year pair-bonding in Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii)

Mating strategies in fishes are known to include polygyny, polyandry and monogamy and provide valuable insights regarding powerful evolutionary forces such as sexual selection. Monogamy is a complex of mating systems that has been relatively neglected. Previous work on mating strategies in fishes has often been based on observation and focused on marine species rather than freshwater fishes. SNPs are increasingly being used as a molecular ecology tool in non-model organisms, and methods of probabilistic genetic analysis of such datasets are becoming available for use in the absence of parental genotypes. This approach can be used to infer mating strategies. The long-term pair bonding seen in mammals, reptiles and birds has not been recorded in freshwater fishes-in every other respect an extremely diverse group. This study shows that multi-year pair bonding occurs in an Australian Percichthyid fish that exhibits paternal care of eggs and larvae. Using SNPs, full sibling pairs of larvae were found over multiple years in a three-year study. Stable isotope signatures of the larvae support the genetic inference that full sibling pairs shared a common mother, the ultimate source of that isotopic signature during oogenesis. Spatial and temporal clustering also suggests that the full sibling larvae are unlikely to be false positive identifications of the probabilistic identification of siblings. For the first time, we show multi-year pair bonding in a wild freshwater fish. This will have important conservation and management implications for the species. This approach could provide insights into many behavioural, ecological and evolutionary questions, particularly if this is not a unique case. Our findings are likely to initiate interest in seeking more examples of monogamy and alternative mating strategies in freshwater fishes, particularly if others improve methods of analysis of SNP data for identification of siblings in the absence of parental genotypes.

Individual recognition and the 'face inversion effect' in medaka fish (Oryzias latipes)

Individual recognition (IR) is essential for maintaining various social interactions in a group, and face recognition is one of the most specialised cognitive abilities in IR. We used both a mating preference system and an electric shock conditioning experiment to test IR ability in medaka, and found that signals near the face are important. Medaka required more time to discriminate vertically inverted faces, but not horizontally shifted faces or inverted non-face objects. The ability may be comparable to the classic 'face inversion effect' in humans and some other mammals. Extra patterns added to the face also did not influence the IR. These findings suggest the possibility that the process of face recognition may differ from that used for other objects. The complex form of recognition may promote specific processing adaptations, although the mechanisms and neurological bases might differ in mammals and medaka. The ability to recognise other individuals is important for shaping animal societies.

Mate choice and body pattern variations in the Crown Butterfly fish Chaetodon paucifasciatus (Chaetodontidae)

Mate choice is an important ecological behavior in fish, and is often based on visual cues of body patterns. The Crown Butterfly fish Chaetodon paucifasciatus (Chaetodontidae) is a monogamist, territorial species; it swims in close proximity to its partner throughout most of its life. This species is characterized by a pattern of 6–8 vertical black stripes on a white background, on both sides of its body. Our aim was to define spatial features (variations) in body patterns by evaluating the level of dissimilarity between both sides of each individual fish, and the level of dissimilarity between patterns of different individuals. In addition, we tested whether the fish are attracted to or reject specific features of the body patterns. Features were defined and counted using photographs of body patterns. Attraction to or rejection of specific features were tested behaviorally using a dual-choice experiment of video animations of individuals swimming over a coral-reef background. We found that the patterns of each fish and sides of the body were no less dissimilar, compared intraspecificly to other fish, and that each side pattern was unique and distinguishable. Variations in the patterns occurred mostly in the last three posterior stripes. Individuals were mainly attracted to conspecifics with multiple crossing patterns (two or more consecutive crossings), and rejected patterns with holes. Our results suggest that in this species the unique body pattern of each fish is used for conspecific identification of mates and intruders.
