Abstract
Early T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL), mixed phenotypic acute leukemia (MPAL), and acute myeloid leukemia with minimal differentiation (AML-M0) all originate from immature hematopoietic progenitor cells and have a poor prognosis. We investigated the clinical characteristics of these immature leukemias in 17 children (ETP-ALL: 8, MPAL: 5, AML-M0: 4) at seven institutions. Clinical and laboratory findings were comparable across disease types. Eleven and six patients received ALL- and AML-oriented induction chemotherapy, with six and four achieving complete remission (CR), respectively. Five additional patients achieved CR after salvage with the other type of chemotherapy. Eight patients received hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in first CR, and six survived without relapse. However, six of seven patients who did not receive HCT during first CR relapsed; all underwent HCT later, and only three survived. The 5-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) rate were 37% and 69%, respectively. Patients who achieved CR after induction chemotherapy and received HCT in first CR had favorable EFS and OS. Notably, all patients who received HCT in first CR survived 5 years after diagnosis. Appropriate induction chemotherapy and HCT in first CR could improve the outcome of immature leukemias.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize the immunophenotypic profile of acute leukemias in the population of the state of Bahia, Brazil. METHODS This is a descriptive, retrospective study. From 2014 to 2018, 796 new cases of acute leukemia were evaluated. The data were obtained from analysis of reports and records of tests performed by flow cytometry immunophenotyping. All individuals of all age groups diagnosed as acute lymphoblastic leukemia or acute myeloid leukemia were included in the study. Demographic variables and expression of leukemia antigens were evaluated. RESULTS Most cases were diagnosed as acute myeloid leukemia and 42.7% as acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Significant differences were found in expression of markers in acute leukemias when age groups were compared, as well as in demographic characteristics. B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia was more prevalent than cases of T-cell origin. Assessing the aberrant markers in acute myeloid leukemias, the non-acute promyelocytic leukemia group presented expression of CD7 and CD56 as the most frequent ones. In B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most frequent aberrant markers were CD66c, CD13 and CD33. CONCLUSION Significant differences were found as to several antigens when comparing adults and children, and these findings may contribute to future studies correlating the phenotypic profile to genetic characteristics and therapeutic response, including specific antigen therapies, which may be better targeted.

Abstract
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a complex and highly aggressive disease. To characterize the prognostic factors of pediatric patients with AML relapse, a retrospective cohort study was performed to collect data from children and adolescents, at a hematological oncology reference center, over 11 years. We selected 51 cases of the disease, diagnosed and treated uniformly, divided into two groups: with complete remission (n = 33; 65 %) and with relapse (n = 18; 35 %). The groups were homogeneous concerning demographic characteristics and hematological parameters at diagnosis. AML M3 was the most common subtype (n = 19; 37 %) and was associated with a good prognosis. The highest rate of relapse was with AML M0 (n = 3 of 5 patients; 60 %). The most predominant gene mutation, FLT3-ITD, did not influence the prognosis in our study. The complete remission group presented a higher mean frequency of positive cells for the granulocytic marker CD13a at diagnosis. In cases with AML relapse, CD36, CD4, CD7, and CD22 were the most expressed markers. Increase incidence of recurrence was associated with CD7 (HR 1.035; p = 0.003), CD4 (HR 1.032, p = 0.001) and CD22 (HR 1.042; p = 0.049). Our results highlight the importance of analyzing immunophenotypic markers to help predict the outcome of AML in children and adolescents.

Abstract
Objectives Acute leukemias (AL) are a heterogeneous group of hematological malignancies with the presence of 20% or more blasts in the peripheral blood or bone marrow. Malignant cells display characteristic patterns of surface antigenic expression. Aberrant phenotypes are defined as patterns of antigen expression on neoplastic cells different from the process of normal hematopoietic maturation. We sought to evaluate the occurrence of aberrant phenotypes in newly diagnosed cases of AL. Methods The study included 100 patients in whom both bone marrow aspiration and flow cytometry were performed. Patients with blasts > 20% of all ages were included in the study. Flow cytometric analysis was done using the monoclonal antibody panel of peripheral blood/bone marrow. Results Out of 100 cases, 53 were categorized as acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 43 as acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL), and four cases of mixed phenotypic acute leukemia (MPAL). ALL were subcategorized based on immunophenotyping into B-ALL and T-ALL, which comprised 88.4% and 11.6%, respectively, of total ALL (43.0%) cases. Cluster of differentiation 33 (CD33) and CD13 were the most commonly expressed antigens in AML, with CD7 being the most common aberrancy. CD19 was expressed in all B-ALL cases followed by cCD79a, CD10, Tdt (86.8%) with CD13 being the most common aberrancy. cCD3, CD7, and CD5 were expressed in all T-ALL cases with aberrant antigen expression in 80.0% of T-ALL cases. MPAL cases showed expression of B/myeloid antigens. Conclusions The diagnosis and classification of leukemia rely on the simultaneous application of cytomorphology, cytochemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular techniques. Flow cytometry is of great help in the diagnosis of AL, particularly in ALL for lineage assignment and in classifying MPAL. It also helps in detecting aberrant antigen expression and assisting in minimal residual disease detection.

Abstract
Background For diagnosis, sub-categorization and follow up of Acute Leukemia (AL), phenotypic analysis using flow cytometry is mandatory. Material and methods We retrospectively analyzed immunophenotypic data along with cytogenetics/molecular genetics data (wherever available) from 631 consecutive cases of AL diagnosed at our flow cytometry laboratory from January 2014 to August 2017. Results Of the total 631 cases, 52.9% (n=334) were acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), 43.9% (n=277) acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 2.2% (n=14) mixed phenotypic acute leukemia (MPAL), 0.5% (n=3) acute undifferentiated leukemia (AUL) and 0.5% (n=3) chronic myeloid leukemia in blast crisis (CML-BC). ALL cases comprised of 81.7% (n=273/334) B-cell ALLs (95.2%, n=260/273 common B-ALLs and 4.8%, n=13/273 Pro B-ALLs). CD13 was the commonest cross lineage antigen, expressed in B-ALL (25.6%, n=70/273), followed by CD33 (17.9%, n=49) and combined CD13/CD33 (11.3%, n=31/273) expression. T-ALLs constituted 18.3% (n=61/334) of total ALLs and included 27.9% (n=17/61) cortical T- ALLs. CD13 was commonest (32.7%, n=20/61) aberrantly expressed antigen in T-ALLs, followed by CD117 (19.1%, n=9/47). AML cases included 32.1% (n=89/277) AML with recurrent genetic abnormalities, 9.0% (n=25/277) with FLT3/NPM1c mutation and 58.9% (n=163/277) AML NOS including 14.7% (n=24/163) AML M4/M5, 1.8% (n=3/163) AML M6 and 3.7% (n=6/163) AML M7. In AMLs, CD19 aberrancy was the most common (20.2%, n=56/277) followed by CD56 (15.8%, n=42/265). Conclusions In this study, we document the spectrum, correlate the immunophenotype with genetic data of all leukemias, especially concerning T-ALL where the data from India is scarce.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Aberrant expression of immunophenotypic markers is commonly found in patients of acute leukemia. T-ALL also shows aberrant markers such as CD13, CD33, CD117, CD10, and CD79a. Morphologically, T-ALL has been categorized into L1, L2, and L3 subtypes. Till now, no study has been done to correlate these markers with morphological features of T-ALL. This study aimed to correlate the expression of aberrant immunophenotypic markers with morphology in T-ALL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All the cases of T-ALL diagnosed by flow cytometry over a period of 2½ year were taken out from the records of Hematology Section of Department of Pathology of University College of Medical Science and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and Max Hospital, Saket. Their peripheral blood smear was screened to correlate the morphology of blasts with the expression of aberrant markers. RESULTS: A total of 40 cases of T-ALL were identified during 2½ year period of our study. Morphological correlation was available for 23 cases. Aberrant expression of CD10 was present in 6 (35.3%) cases, CD79a in 9 (47.36%) cases, CD117 in 5 (42.28%) cases and myeloid antigen CD33 in 5 (38.46%) cases. CD117 and CD33-positive cases showed L2 morphology with the presence of convolutions, while cases with expression of CD79a had L1 morphology with absent-slight convolutions. CD10-positive cases had L1/L2 morphology with absent occasionally present convolutions. CONCLUSIONS: There seems to be an association of aberrant markers with L1 and L2 morphology. However, this needs to be tested for statistical significance on a larger sample size.

Abstract
Background and Objective Aberrant phenotype is a phenomenon of abnormal expression or loss of expression of cell specific lineage marker not associated with specific cell type. Aberrant phenotype expression due to genetic defects may be associated with unfavorable outcome. It can be used to determine minimal residual disease status. The purpose of the study was to find out the occurrence of aberrant phenotypes in leukemia/lymphoma patients. Methods One milliliter peripheral blood or bone marrow samples were analyzed on FACS Calibur flowcytometer. The cells were lysed and stained following standard protocol. Data was acquired and analyzed by CellQuest-Pro software. The Antigenic expression was rated as positive when the percentage of positive blast cells was ≥ 20%. In that manner, aberrant phenotype was considered positive when 20% of blast cells show expression of markers. Results Of a total 145 cases analyzed, 26 were acute myeloid leukemia, 71 of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, 48 were of Chronic Lymphoid leukemia on the basis of morphological features and confirmed by flow cytometry. Overall, 19% (28) cases showed aberrant expression of antigens. In 32% (9/28) AML patients, CD5, CD7, CD64dim, CD10, CD117, CD25 and TdT were expressed while in 25% (7/28) ALL patients CD33, CD13, HLA-DR and CD3 were detected. Among chronic leukemia, all aberrant expressions were seen in cases of B-CLL (10/28) only; with CD11c, CD3 and CD10 as the aberrantly expressed markers. Conclusion Variability in aberrant phenotype expression was observed in different types of acute and chronic leukemia patients with no prognostic implications on treatment response.

Abstract
In acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), limited data are available on mTOR gene expression in clinical samples and its role in predicting response to induction chemotherapy. mRNA expression of mTOR gene was determined quantitatively by real-time PCR in 50 ALL patients (30 B-ALL and 20 T-ALL) and correlated with clinical outcome after induction chemotherapy. Expression level of mTOR was upregulated in more than 50% of cases of ALL. In T-ALL, high expression of mTOR was commonly seen, more in adults than children (82 vs. 55% cases), while in B-ALL it was same (~ 63% cases) in both adults and children. Mean fold change of mTOR expression was significantly higher in non-responders compared to responders of both adult B-ALL (7.4 vs. 2.7, p = 0.05) and T-ALL (13.9 vs. 2.4, p = 0.001). Similar results were seen in pediatric non-responders when compared to responders of both B-ALL (14.5 vs. 2.5, p = 0.006) and T-ALL (24.2 vs. 1.7, p = 0.002). Interestingly, we have observed that mTOR expression was two times higher in non-responders of children compared to adults in both B-ALL (14.5 vs. 7.4, p = 0.05) and T-ALL (24.2 vs. 13.9, p = 0.01). Multivariate analysis with other known prognostic factors revealed that mTOR expression independently predicts clinical response to induction chemotherapy in ALL. This study demonstrates that high mTOR expression is associated with poor clinical outcome in ALL and can serve as a potential target for novel therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is an aggressive hematological malignancy, accounting for ~25% of all adult cases of ALL. We herein report a case of T-cell ALL exhibiting aberrant CD34, CD56, CD33 and CD117 expression in addition to T-cell markers, which did not respond to induction treatment. A 55-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a sore throat unresponsive to medication for 1 month. The laboratory examination revealed pancytopenia and the peripheral blood smear examination revealed blast cells. On flow cytometric analysis, the blast cells were found to be positive for cytoplasmic CD3, CD2, CD5, CD7, CD34, CD56, CD33 and CD117, and negative for myeloperoxidase, CD13, CD11b, CD15, CD19, CD79a, CD22 and CD10. The patient was diagnosed with T-cell ALL according to the 2008 World Health Organisation classification. The patient did not respond to Hyper-cyclophosphamide, vincristine, adriamycin and dexamethasone (CVAD) course A treatment and succumbed to the disease during Hyper-CVAD course B treatment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of aberrant co-expression of the natural killer cell marker CD56, myeloid cell markers CD117 and CD33 and stem cell marker CD34 in a patient with T-cell ALL. This appears to be associated with an unfavorable outcome, despite the use of intensive chemotherapy.

Abstract
Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy has been used as a targeted approach in cancer therapy. Relapsed and refractory acute leukemia in pediatrics has been difficult to treat with conventional therapy due to dose-limiting toxicities. With the recent success of CD 19 CAR in pediatric patients with B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), this mode of therapy has become a very attractive option for these patients with high-risk disease. In this review, we will discuss current treatment paradigms of pediatric acute leukemia and potential therapeutic targets for additional high-risk populations, including T cell ALL, AML, and infant ALL.

Abstract
Introduction: This study sought to investigate the immunophenotypic subtype profiles of 110 Chinese adult patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and its association to cytogenetics and the clinical features. Materials and Methods: A total of 110 adult patients with ALL were immunophenotyped by CD45/SSC double parameters and 4 colour flow cytometry. Seventy-three cases were also subjected to karyotype analysis by R-banding technology. The clinical and laboratory data of 110 ALL patients were retrospectively analysed. Results: Of all the patients, 21.8% were identified as T-ALL, 78.2% as B-ALL. Abnormal karyotypes were detected in 37 out of 73 (50.7%) cases and the most common cytogenetic abnormality was the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome, which was found in 23.3% (17/73) of the cases. Myeloid antigen (MyAg) expression was documented in 47.3% of the 110 adult ALL cases analysed and CD13 was the most commonly expressed MyAg in ALL patients (32.1 %). No difference was observed in the expression of MyAg between the groups of patients with T-ALL (45.8%) and B-ALL (47.7%). Our data showed that older age, higher CD34 positivity and lower proportion of patients with splenomegaly were found to be correlated with MyAg+ ALL, and that patients with Ph+ B-ALL were older, presented with higher haemoglobin level and higher CD34 expression. No statistical difference was noted in complete remission (CR) rate, relapse rate, induction mortality or total death rate among My+ and My-, Ph+ and Ph-, or B-ALL and T-ALL patients. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the distribution of ALL in Chinese adult patients was similar with the general distribution pattern in the other countries, and the expression of MyAg in patients with T-ALL and B-ALL was comparable. Both the expression of MyAg and the presence of Ph chromosome in adult ALL were significantly associated with median age and CD34 expression while not with the response to induction treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of aberrant phenotypes and possible prognostic value in peripheral and bone marrow blood mononuclear cells of Iranian patients with AML. METHODS 56 cases of de novo AML (2010-2012) diagnosed by using an acute panel of monoclonal antibodies by multiparametric flowcytometry. Immunophenotyping was done on fresh bone marrow aspirate and/or peripheral blood samples using the acute panel of MoAbs is stained with Phycoerythrin (PE) /fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), Allophycocyanin (APC) and Peridinin-chlorophyll protein complex (perCP). We investigated Co-expression of lymphoid-associated markers CD2, CD3, CD7, CD 10, CD19, CD20 and CD22 in myeloblasts. RESULTS Out of the 56 cases, 32 (57.1%) showed AP. CD7 was positive in 72.7% of cases in M1 and 28.5% in M2 but M3 and M4 cases lacked this marker. We detected CD2 in 58.35 of M1cases, 21.40% of M2 cases, 33.3 of M3 and 20% of M5; but M4 patients lacked this marker. The CBC analysis demonstrated a wide range of haemoglobin concentration, Platelet and WBC count which varied from normal to anaemia, thrombocytopenia to thrombocytosis and leukopenia to hyper leukocytosis. CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that CD7 and CD2 were the most common aberrant marker in Iranian patients with AML. However, we are not find any significant correlation between aberrant phenotype changing and MRD in our population. Taken together, this findings help to provide new insights in to the investigation of other aberrant phenotypes that may play roles in diagnosis and therapeutic of AML.

Abstract
Polymorphisms in xenobiotic metabolizing genes are associated with altered metabolism of carcinogens in acute leukemia (AL). This study applied two data mining approaches to explore potential interactions among P53 and xenobiotic metabolizing genes in 230 AL patients [131 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 99 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)] and 199 controls. Individually, none of the genotypes showed significant associations with AML risk. However, in ALL the CYP1A12A TC genotype was associated with increased risk (OR = 2.02; 95% CI = 1.14-3.58; P = 0.01), whereas the GSTM1 null genotype imparted reduced risk (OR = 0.55; 95% CI = 0.31-0.96; P = 0.03). In classification and regression tree analysis, combinations of GSTM1 present, CYP1A12C AA or GG, EPHX1 exon3 TC, and EPHX1 exon4 AA or GG genotype strongly enhanced the risk of AML (OR = 5.89; 95% CI = 1.40-26.62; P = 0.01). In ALL, combinations of CYP1A12A TT, P53 GG or CC and GSTP1 AG genotypes conferred the highest risk (OR = 4.19; 95% CI = 1.45-12.25; P = 0.004). In multifactor dimensionality reduction analysis, a four locus model (GSTP1, P53, EPHX1 exon3, and CYP1A12A) was the best predictor model for ALL risk. The association between this model and ALL risk remained true even at low prior probabilities of 0.01% (false positive report probability = 0.05). Interaction entropy interpretations of the best model of ALL revealed that two-way interactions were mostly synergistic. These results suggest that high order gene-gene interactions play an important role in AL risk.

Abstract
Acute leukemia (AL) displays characteristic patterns of antigen expression, which facilitate their identification and proper classification. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of commonly used immune-markers for immunophenotyping of AL and to define the best immune-markers to be used for proper diagnosis and classification of AL. Besides, to recognize the frequency of different AL subtypes and the antigen expression profile in our Egyptian patients. We retrospectively analyzed the immunophenotypic data of 164 de novo AL patients from our institution during 2009 and 2010. Among these patients, 68.9% were classified as acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) while 31.1% classified as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The commonest FAB subtype in AML group was AML-M4/5 (34.5%) which may differ from most published data. As regard ALL, there were 74.5% with B-ALL and 25.5% with T-ALL. It was found that combined use of HLADR and CD34 was much more helpful in distinguishing APL from non-APL AML than either of these antigens alone. It was found that cCD79a and CD19 were the most sensitive marker for B-ALL while cCD3, CD7 and CD5 were the most sensitive antigens for T-ALL. Our analysis of AL phenotypes proved that employed antibody panels are adequate for proper diagnosis and classification of AL. Flowcytometry was found to be especially useful in the identification of AML-M0 and differentiation of APL from non-APL AML. Immunophenotyping results and FAB classification of our AL patients were comparable to internationally published studies apart from predominance of AML-M4/5 and more frequent APL.

Abstract
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES The incidence of acute leukemia (AL) subtypes varies according to geographical distribution. The aim here was to determine the incidence of morphological and immunophenotypic AL subtypes in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, and to correlate the expression of aberrant phenotypes in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with prognostic factors. DESIGN AND SETTING Single prospective cohort study at a public oncology reference center in Maranhão. METHODS Seventy AL cases were diagnosed between September 2008 and January 2010. For the diagnosis, complete blood cell counts, myelograms (at diagnosis and at the end of the induction phase), cytochemical analysis and immunophenotyping were performed. RESULTS Among adult patients (n = 22), the incidence of AL types was: ALL (22.7%) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) (77.3%). The subtype AML M0 occurred most frequently (29.4%). In children (n = 48), the types were: AML (18.7%), most frequently subtype AML M4 (33.4%); biphenotypic acute leukemia (BAL) (4.2%); and ALL (77.1%), including the subtypes B-ALL (72.9%) and T-ALL (27.1%). Among the children with ALL, there were no statistically significant differences between patients with and without aberrant phenotypes, in relation to hematological parameters and treatment response. CONCLUSION This work demonstrates that the frequencies of AML M0 cases among adults and T-ALL cases among children in Maranhão were high. This suggests that there may be differences in AML subtype incidence, as seen with ALL subtypes, in different regions of Brazil. No association was found between the expression of aberrant phenotypes and prognostic factors, in children with ALL.

Abstract
Resistance to chemotherapy is a major impediment to the successful treatment of acute leukemia (AL). Expression of genes involved in drug resistance and apoptosis may be responsible for this. This study aimed to investigate the expression of drug resistance (MDR1, MRP1, LRP, BCRP, GSTP1, DHFR) and apoptotic genes (p53, BCL-2, Survivin) in adult acute leukemias and compare them with clinical and hematological findings and response to induction chemotherapy. Eighty-five patients with AL [45 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 40 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)] were used as a study group. Real-time PCR results showed that expression level of MDR1 was significantly higher in AML whereas expression of DHFR, BCRP and Survivin was significantly higher in ALL patients. In AML, significant correlation was observed between LRP and MRP1 (r(s)=0.44, p=0.016), LRP and DHFR (r(s)=0.41, p=0.02), MDR1 and BCL-2 (r(s)=0.38, p=0.03). Expression of GSTP1 and LRP correlated with high white blood count (p=0.03 and p=0.03) and BCL-2 with high peripheral blast count (p=0.009). MDR1 expression was significantly associated with the expression of immature stem cell marker CD34 (p=0.002). In ALL, significant association was found between LRP gene and female sex (p<0.0001), LRP and B-ALL patients (p=0.04) and LRP and BCR/ABL positive patients (p=0.004). High expression of MDR1 and BCL-2 in AML and MRP1 gene in ALL was associated with response to induction chemotherapy (p=0.001, p=0.02 and p=0.007 respectively). These results showed the potential clinical relevance of MDR1, MRP1 and BCL-2 in adult patients with acute leukemia in the context of induction chemotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immunohistochemical stains, particularly those for cutaneous lymphomas, have similar-sounding names, which may lead to confusion among dermatologists who are not well versed in the terminology of the tools used for pathologic diagnosis. Also aiding in this is the fact that some familiar stains are constantly investigated for novel utility in different tumors, and a plethora of new stains regularly emerge in the peer-reviewed literature. OBJECTIVE To review the major stains encountered in dermatopathologic reports for cutaneous lymphomas. A select number of other stains are reviewed that are either new and under investigation in several cutaneous processes or have a new use described in recent reports. METHODS The peer-reviewed literature was searched and analyzed for the accepted purposes of using these markers. RESULTS All pertinent findings for these immunostains are reported with the purpose of educating the dermatology community. CONCLUSION This review serves as a reference to clarify potentially confusing immunohistochemical stains.

Abstract
Polymorphisms in genes encoding detoxification enzymes have been suggested as susceptibility factors for many solid tumors. However, their association with hematological malignancies is controversial. A case-control study was done to determine the association between glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1), GSTT1, GSTP1, EPHX1, and p53 codon 72 polymorphisms as risk factors in 120 adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases and 202 healthy controls by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism techniques. Data were analyzed using χ(2) and conditional logistic regression model. None of the polymorphisms studied alone was associated with increased risk for AML. However, the frequency of GSTT1 null genotype was higher among controls (28.7%) than AML cases (21.6%), which showed a protective effect of the null genotype (odds ratio = 0.58, 95% confidence interval: 0.33-1.05, p = 0.07). In a combined analysis, both EPHX1 (His113His) and GSTP1 (Ile/Val) genes imparted a fourfold risk for adult AML but did not reach statistical significance (odds ratio = 4.22, 95% confidence interval: 0.992-17.99, p = 0.05). These findings suggest that the etiology of adult AML cannot be explained by polymorphism at a single locus, perhaps because of complexity involved in the metabolism of diverse xenobiotic compounds, and therefore, multiple gene-gene interactions should be investigated to predict the risk of AML.
