A Facile Solid-Phase Micro-Extraction Fiber Based on Pine Needles Biochar Coating for Extraction of Polychlorinated Biphenyls from Water Samples

Biochar nanosphere-functionalized carbon fibers for in-tube solid-phase microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in environmental water followed by liquid chromatography and diode array detection

In order to improve the extraction ability of carbon fibers (CFs) for microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), biochar nanospheres derived from glucose were in-situ grown onto the surface of CFs via hydrothermal synthesis. The surface morphology and elemental composition of biochar nanospheres-CFs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Thereafter, the biochar nanosphere-CFs were pulled into the polyetheretherketone tube for solid-phase microextraction, and the tube was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector to online detect PAHs. With the help of π-stacking, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic effect of biochar nanospheres, the extraction efficiency of CFs was greatly enhanced (enrichment factor increased by 293% compared with  the original). The conditions affecting the analytical performance (sampling volume, sampling rate, methanol content, and desorption time) were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, an online analytical method for microextraction and determination of several PAHs was developed, and satisfactory results were achieved. The limits of detection were 0.003-0.010 ng mL-1 owing to high enrichment effect (2973-3600), linearity ranged from  0.010-15.0 ng mL-1, and relative standard deviations were 0.4%-1.6% (intra-day) and 2.4%-4.4% (inter-day), respectively. The method was applied to analyze environmental water samples (rain water, snow water, and river water), and spiked recoveries within 80.0%-119% were obtained.

Preparation of bamboo-derived magnetic biochar for solid-phase microextraction of fentanyls from urine

In this study, a biochar-based magnetic solid-phase microextraction method, coupled with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS), was developed for analyzing fentanyl analogs from urine sample. Magnetic biochar was fabricated through an one-step pyrolysis carbonization and magnetization process, followed by an alkali treatment. In order to achieve desired extraction efficiency, feed stocks (wood and bamboo) and different pyrolysis temperatures (300-700 °C) were optimized. The magnetic bamboo biochar pyrolyzed at 400°C was found to have the greatest potential for extraction of fentanyls, with enrichment factors ranging from 58.9 to 93.7, presumably due to H-bonding and π- π interactions between biochar and fentanyls. Various extraction parameters, such as type and volume of desorption solvent, pH, extraction time were optimized, respectively, to achieve the highest extraction efficiency for the target fentanyls. Under optimized conditions, the developed method was found to have detection limits of 3.1-9.4 ng/L, a linear range of 0.05-10 μg/L, good precisions (1.9-9.4% for intra-batch, 2.9-9.9% for inter-batch), and satisfactory recoveries (82.0-111.3%). The developed method by using magnetic bamboo biochar as adsorbent exhibited to be an efficient and promising pretreatment procedure and could potentially be applied for drug analysis in biological samples. Use of corn straw-derived biochar for magnetic solid-phase microextraction of organophosphorus pesticides from environmental samples

In this study, the potentials of utilizing corn straw-derived biochar in environmental sample pretreatment were examined. An one-step magnetization and carbonization process was developed to prepare magnetic biochar by mixing corn straw powder with Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ and then pyrolyzed at different temperatures (400-800 °C). The obtained magnetic biochars were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller isotherms, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Various extraction affecting parameters, such as Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺content, pyrolytic temperature, species of desorption solvent, extraction and desorption time, respectively, were studied and optimized. Results showed that the magnetic biochar pyrolyzed at 700 °C exhibited the best extraction performance, with enrichment factors ranging from 52 to 210, presumably due to H-bonding and π-π interactions between biochar and organophosphorus, as well as to the high surface area and pore volume of biochar. The magnetic biochar-based extraction was further combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to analyze trace organophosphorus pesticides from environmental samples. The method demonstrated good linearity (0.1-50 µg·L^-1), low limits of detection (0.02-0.11 µg·L^-1), and high recoveries (72.4-96.8%) from spiked water and soil samples. The results of this study suggested the promising potentials of utilizing corn straw-derived biochar for efficiently enriching trace organophosphorus pesticides from complex environmental samples.

Evaluation of sewage sludge biochar and modified derivatives as novel SPE adsorbents for monitoring of bisphenol A

Sewage sludge is abundant biomass, the sustainable management of which remains a big issue worldwide. It was demonstrated that pyrolysis of sewage sludge using simple and cost-effective apparatus can produce biochars, suitable for solid-phase extraction applications of hydrophobic analytes. Detailed characterization showed that modification lead to three more hydrophobic and one more hydrophilic sample, compared to the original biochar. All samples were evaluated in the solid-phase extraction of the emerging contaminant Bisphenol A from aqueous solutions. KOH-SSB and KOH/MeOH-SSB exhibited the most promising behavior, with the latter achieving recoveries of 88.1%, at a quantity of 0.1 g at the natural pH of the BPA solution (6.5). The effect of solution pH was insignificant in the range of 4-7, whereas the initial BPA concentration had no effect in the recovery within the range of 1-100 μg L^-1. The mechanism of interaction between the optimum sample and BPA was based on hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions, establishing earlier observations that the type (and not concentration) of individual surface groups and the total surface area play a significant role in the process.

Cork sheet as a sorptive phase to extract hormones from water by rotating-disk sorptive extraction (RDSE)

This work reports for the first time the use of laminar cork as a sorptive phase in a microextraction technique, rotating-disk sorptive extraction (RDSE). Typical hormones (estrone, estradiol, estriol and ethinyl estradiol) were selected as analyte models and extracted from wastewater samples on laminar cork with statistically equivalent extraction efficiency to that provided by Oasis HLB. The cork characterization was performed by confocal fluorescence microscopy (CLSM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), allowing the identification of lignin, suberin and polysaccharides (cellulose and hemicellulose) as the main components of the cork. The best conditions for extraction were as follows: rotation velocity of the disk, 2000 rpm; extraction time, 45 min; and sample volume, 20 mL. The analytical features of the developed method show that calibration curves for all analytes have R² values higher than 0.99. The absolute recoveries were higher than 63%, and the precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, ranged from 2 to 16%. The LOD and LOQ ranges were 3-19 and 10-62 ng L^-1, respectively. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of wastewater, and the concentrations of hormones in a wastewater treatment plant in Santiago, Chile, ranged from <LOQ to 48 ng L^-1.
