Validity of the EASYCare Standard 2010 assessment instrument for self-assessment of health, independence, and well-being of older people living at home in Poland

Determinants of Attitude to a Humanoid Social Robot in Care for Older Adults: A Post-Interaction Study

BACKGROUND While there is a growing body of research examining opinions on social robots in elderly care, there is a lack of comprehensive studies investigating the underlying factors influencing these opinions. The Godspeed Questionnaire Series (GQS) measures perceptions related to human-robot interactions (HRIs). The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is widely used to evaluate physical, cognitive, and social functions of older patients. The EASYCare 2010 Standard (EC) is a tool for assessing unmet needs in older individuals. TIAGo, a social humanoid robot, integrates perception, navigation, and HRI capabilities. This study aimed to identify the determinants of perception following interactions between older individuals and TIAGo, utilizing the GQS, selected CGA items, and EC. MATERIAL AND METHODS We analyzed a database of opinions from older individuals who interacted with TIAGo, based on the Users' Needs, Requirements, and Abilities Questionnaire. We examined the relationships between the robot's roles (companion/assistant/useful device), its assistive/social functions, and various characteristics of the older participants. RESULTS The study included 161 participants (mean age: 75.2±9.8 years), comprising 89 women and 113 institutionalized individuals. Positive correlations were observed between the robot's role, its functions, and the participants'; perceptions across most evaluated parameters (Anthropomorphism, Animacy, Likeability, Perceived intelligence, Perceived safety). Only a few individual correlations were found for other parameters. CONCLUSIONS The primary determinant of older individuals' opinions was their perception of the robot. Therefore, involving older adults in the co-design process of such robots is crucial. Additionally, a paradigm shift is needed in the study of humanoid social robots, focusing on successful aging rather than deficits associated with aging.

The Association of Self-Esteem with the Level of Independent Functioning and the Primary Demographic Factors in Persons over 60 Years of Age

Self-esteem reflects the way we see ourselves. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship among self-esteem, bio-psycho-social functioning, and sociodemographic conditions in the elderly. The study included 300 individuals over 60 years of age living in their home environment. The employed research tools included the Abbreviated Mental Test Score, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and EASYCare Standard 2010 questionnaire involving the following scales: independence score, risk of breakdown in care, and risk of falls. Results: The average score achieved by the study group according to the RSES scale was 29.9 ± 5.6 points. In addition, the study group presented a low risk of independence loss (independence score 13.3 ± 18.1), risk of breakdown in care (4.4 ± 2.4), and risk of falls (1.8 ± 1.6). The conducted multivariate analysis demonstrated that a significant (p < 0.05) negative predictor of low self-esteem was education below the secondary level, a poor financial condition, and functional limitations in domain I (seeing, hearing, and communicating skills) of the EASYCare Standard 2010 questionnaire. A relationship was found between self-esteem and the level of bio-psycho-social functioning, as well as between education and the financial situation. The results demonstrate that even successfully ageing individuals require a regular assessment of their functional status and individually adapted support in order to maintain independence and to increase their self-esteem.

Instrument development and validation of the comprehensive ability of older people assessment scale

Aim

The study is aimed to develop and psychometrically test the Comprehensive Ability of Older People Assessment scale and classify the ability grades.

Design

A cross‐sectional design was used for instrument development.

Method

The Comprehensive Ability of Older People Assessment scale was developed by a sample of 971 older people from 4 long‐term care institutions in China. The data were collected between April 2018 and March 2020. One‐way analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis was used to screen scale items, while focus group interviews were used to integrate the subjective and objective items. Confirmative factor analysis and expert judgment were applied to explore construct validity. Reliability was explored through internal consistency estimation using Cronbach's alpha and homogeneity evaluation using corrected item‐total correlations. Cluster analysis and discriminant analysis were used to segment the comprehensive ability assessment scores and discriminant function was established to determine the boundary value of each segment, using correlation analysis to perform reverse verification.

Results

Factor analysis yielded 40 items with six dimensions, including “mentation and cognitive,” “perception and communication,” “emotional problems,” “mental and behavioural problems,” “daily life and social participation,” and “skin and oral status.” The Cronbach's α was 0.951, while the dimensions showed Cronbach's α values ranging from 0.760–0.946. The rationality and scientificity of this scale were proved by the correlation analysis of reverse validation.

Conclusion

The 4‐grade Comprehensive Ability of Older People Assessment scale is proved to be with good validity and reliability and should be considered for institutional assessors.

Impact

Assessors can accurately evaluate older people's health status and nursing needs through this scale in long‐term care institutions, communities and hospitals, so as to provide accurate and high‐quality nursing services. It will become a scientific basis for the government to offer accurate pension subsidies, purchase pension services scientifically for older people and establish third‐party objective evaluation and supervision.

Self-assessment of functional status in older emergency department patients: a cross-over randomized pilot trial

OBJECTIVE

To assess the inter-rater reliability and feasibility of the self-assessed Older Americans Resources and Services scale compared to its administration by a research assistant in older Emergency Department (ED) patients.

METHOD

This is a planned sub-analysis of a single-center randomized cross-over pilot study. A convenience sample of ED patients aged ≥ 65 was constituted at the CHU de Québec-Université Laval (Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus) between 2018/05 and 2018/07. Research assistants assessed participants' functional status using the Older Americans Resources and Services scale and patients self-assessed using a modified Older Americans Resources and Services scale. Test administration order was randomized. The main outcome, inter-rater reliability, was measured using intraclass correlation (ICC). Feasibility was measured using self-assessment completion rate.

RESULTS

67 patients were included and 60 completed self-assessment. Mean age was 74.4 ± 7.6 and 34 (56.7%) participants were women. Mean research assistant-assessed Older Americans Resources and Services scale score was 25.1 ± 3.3, while mean self-assessed Older Americans Resources and Services scale score was 26.4 ± 2.5 [ICC: 0.8 (95% CI: 0.7-0.9)]. Mean activities of daily living scores were 12.5 ± 1.8 for research assistant assessment and 13.5 ± 0.9 for self-assessment [ICC: 0.6 (95% CI: 0.4-0.7)]. Mean instrumental activities of daily living scores were 12.6 ± 1.8 and 12.9 ± 1.8 for research assistant assessment and self-assessment, respectively [ICC: 0.9 (95% CI: 0.8-0.9)].

CONCLUSION

Our results indicate that self-assessment of functional status by older ED patients is feasible, and good-to-moderate inter-rater reliability results were obtained. A self-assessed score may identify patients in need of further geriatric/functional assessment who may otherwise have been left unscreened.

The impact of caregiving on caregivers of older persons and its associated factors: a cross-sectional study

INTRODUCTION

Many older people rely on caregivers for support. Caring for older people can pose significant burdens for caregivers yet may also have positive effects. This study aimed to assess the impact on the caregivers and to determine factors associated with caregivers who were burdened.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study of 385 caregivers of older people who attended a community clinic in Malaysia. Convenience sampling was employed during the study period on caregivers who were aged ≥ 21 years and provided ≥ 4 hours of unpaid support per week. Participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire, which included the Carers of Older People in Europe (COPE) index and the EASYCare Standard 2010 independence score. The COPE index was used to assess the impact of caregiving. A highly burdened caregiver was defined as one whose scores for all three COPE subscales were positive for burden. Care recipients' independence was assessed using the independence score of the EASYCare Standard 2010 questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with caregiver burden.

RESULTS

73 (19.0%) caregivers were burdened, of whom two were highly burdened. Caregivers' median scores on the positive value, negative impact and quality of support scales were 13.0, 9.0 and 12.0, respectively. Care recipients' median independence score was 18.0. Ethnicity and education levels were found to be associated with caregiver burden.

CONCLUSION

Most caregivers gained satisfaction and felt supported in caregiving. Ethnicity and education level were associated with a caregiver being burdened.
