Advancing Computational Analysis of Porous Materials-Modeling Three-Dimensional Gas Adsorption in Organic Gels

Assessing the efficacy of specific porous materials for use in various applications has been a central focus for many experimental studies over the years, with a view to altering the material properties according to the desired characteristics. The application potential for one such class of nanoporous materials-organic resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) gels-is of particular interest, due to their attractive and adjustable properties. In this work, we simulate adsorption analysis using lattice-based mean field theory, both in individual pores and within three-dimensional porous materials generated from a kinetic Monte Carlo cluster aggregation model. We investigate the impacts of varying pore size and geometry on the adsorptive behavior, with results agreeing with those previously postulated in the literature. The adsorption analysis is carried out for porous materials simulated with varying catalyst concentrations and solids contents, allowing their structural properties to be assessed from resulting isotherms and the adsorption and desorption processes visualized using density color maps. Isotherm analysis indicated that both low catalyst concentrations and low solids contents resulted in structures with open transport pores that were larger in width, while high catalyst concentrations and solids contents resulted in structures with bottleneck pores that were narrower. We present results from both the simulated isotherms and pore size analysis distributions, in addition to results from RF gels synthesized in the lab and analyzed experimentally, with significant similarities observed between the two. Not only do the results of this comparison validate the kinetic Monte Carlo model's ability to successfully capture the formation of RF gels under varying synthesis parameters, but they also show significant promise for the tailoring of material properties in an efficient and computationally inexpensive manner-something which would be pivotal in realizing their full application potential, and could be applied to other porous materials whose formation mechanism operates under similar principles.

On the canonical isotherms for bulk fluid, surface adsorption and adsorption in pores: A common thread

Kinetic Monte Carlo simulated isotherms calculated in the canonical ensemble, at temperatures below the critical temperature, for bulk fluid, surface adsorption and adsorption in a confined space, show a van der Waals (vdW) loop with a vertical phase transition between the rarefied and dense spinodal points at the co-existence chemical potential, µ_co. Microscopic examination of the state points on this loop reveals features that are common to these systems. At state points with chemical potentials greater than μ_co the microscopic configurations show clusters, which coalesce to form two co-existing phases along the vertical section of the loop (the coexistence line). As more molecules are added, the dense region expands at the expense of the rarefied region, to the point where the rarefied region becomes spherical (cylindrical for 2D-systems) with a curvature greater than that of the coexisting phases. This results in a decrease of chemical potential from µ_co to the liquid spinodal point where the rarefied region disappears. With a further increase in loading, the chemical potential and the density increase. The existence of a vdW loop is the microscopic reason for the hysteresis observed in the grand canonical isotherm, where the adsorption and desorption boundaries of the hysteresis loop are first-order transitions, enclosing the vertical section of the vdW loop of the canonical isotherm. However, a first-order transition is rarely observed in experiments where transitions are usually steep, but not vertical. From our extensive simulations, we provide two possible reasons: (1) the finite extent of the system and (2) the existence of high energy sites that localize the clusters. In the first case, the desorption branch, and in the second case the adsorption branch, either comes close to, or collapses onto the coexistence line. When both occur, the hysteresis loop disappears and the isotherm is reversible, as often observed experimentally.

Adsorption of emerging pollutants on activated carbon

Many emerging pollutants (also known as micro-pollutants) including pesticides, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have frequently been detected in surface, ground, and drinking water at alarming concentrations. The emission and accumulation of these anthropogenic chemicals in nature is a potential threat to human health and aquatic environment. Therefore, it is essential to devise an effective and feasible technology to remove the micro-pollutants from water. Activated carbon adsorption has been introduced and utilized as a promising treatment to reduce the concentration of the emerging pollutants in water. A summary of research on the removal of pesticides, PPCPs, and EDCs by activated carbon adsorption process is presented in this report. The effects of carbon characteristics, adsorptive properties, and environmental factors on the adsorption capacity of activated carbon are reviewed. In addition, the mechanisms of the adsorption including hydrophobicity and the nature of the functional groups of activated carbon and organic compounds are discussed. Furthermore, the applied equilibrium adsorption isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, BET, Sips, Dubinin-Astakhov, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Toth) and the most common kinetic models (pseudo-first- and second-order models, film and intra-particle diffusion models, and adsorption-desorption model) are also included for further investigation. This comprehensive review report aims to identify the knowledge deficiencies regarding emerging pollutant treatment via activated carbon adsorption process and open new horizons for the future research on the adsorption of emerging pollutants on activated carbon.

Dynamical aspects of the adsorption hysteresis phenomenon

Equilibrium and nonequilibrium transport properties of adsorbates in mesoporous Vycor porous glass have been experimentally studied using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. With the known geometrical characteristics of porous glass and with measured self-diffusivities, transient sorption curves have been quantitatively compared to those predicted within a Fick's law model. This model correctly describes data outside a hysteresis region. In contrast, in the hysteresis region, a two-step mechanism of density relaxation is required to explain the behavior. These two mechanisms are identified as diffusion at early stages and activated density redistribution at later stages of adsorption. The latter mechanism, being intrinsically slow in nature, is anticipated to prevent the system from reaching equilibrium.
