Chemical shaping of CPO-27-M (M = Co, Ni) through an in situ crystallization within chitosan hydrogels

The preparation of MOF composites is considered as an effective method to address the challenges of shaping MOFs and to create porous solids with enhanced properties and broader applications. In this study, CPO-27-Co was crystallized via a simple strategy within porous chitosan beads. The resulting CS@CPO-27-Co composites were tested for CO2 sorption and they demonstrated promising performances by exceeding 3 mmol(CO2) g-1. The versatility of this strategy was further demonstrated by replacing cobalt(II) ions with nickel(II), also leading to the isostructural CPO-27 framework.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Harvesting and Concurrent Carbon Capture: A Review for Hygroscopic Materials

As water scarcity becomes a pending global issue, hygroscopic materials prove a significant solution. Thus, there is a good cause following the structure-performance relationship to review the recent development of hygroscopic materials and provide inspirational insight into creative materials. Herein, traditional hygroscopic materials, crystalline frameworks, polymers, and composite materials are reviewed. The similarity in working conditions of water harvesting and carbon capture makes simultaneously addressing water shortages and reduction of greenhouse effects possible. Concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture is likely to become a future challenge. Therefore, an emphasis is laid on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for their excellent performance in water and CO2 adsorption, and representative role of micro- and mesoporous materials. Herein, the water adsorption mechanisms of MOFs are summarized, followed by a review of MOF's water stability, with a highlight on the emerging machine learning (ML) technique to predict MOF water stability and water uptake. Recent advances in the mechanistic elaboration of moisture's effects on CO2 adsorption are reviewed. This review summarizes recent advances in water-harvesting porous materials with special attention on MOFs and expects to direct researchers' attention into the topic of concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture as a future challenge.

An Upper Bound Visualization of Design Trade-Offs in Adsorbent Materials for Gas Separations: CO2 , N2 , CH4 , H2 , O2 , Xe, Kr, and Ar Adsorbents

The last 20 years have seen many publications investigating porous solids for gas adsorption and separation. The abundance of adsorbent materials (this work identifies 1608 materials for CO₂ /N₂ separation alone) provides a challenge to obtaining a comprehensive view of the field, identifying leading design strategies, and selecting materials for process modeling. In 2021, the empirical bound visualization technique was applied, analogous to the Robeson upper bound from membrane science, to alkane/alkene adsorbents. These bound visualizations reveal that adsorbent materials are limited by design trade-offs between capacity, selectivity, and heat of adsorption. The current work applies the bound visualization to adsorbents for a wider range of gas pairs, including CO₂ , N₂ , CH₄ , H₂ , Xe, O₂ , and Kr. How this visual tool can identify leading materials and place new material discoveries in the context of the wider field is presented. The most promising current strategies for breaking design trade-offs are discussed, along with reproducibility of published adsorption literature, and the limitations of bound visualizations. It is hoped that this work inspires new materials that push the bounds of traditional trade-offs while also considering practical aspects critical to the use of materials on an industrial scale such as cost, stability, and sustainability.

Rational Design of Smart Metal-Organic Frameworks for Light-Modulated Gas Transport

Smart metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are constructed by introducing stimuli-responsive functional groups into MOF platforms. Through membrane systems containing smart MOFs, external field-modulated gas transport can be achieved, which finds potential applications in chemical engineering. In this work, we design a series of Mg-MOF-74-III-based frameworks functionalized by arylazopyrazole groups. Methyleneamine chains with various lengths are attached to the photoresponsive azopyrazole moiety. Molecular dynamics simulations show that CO₂ diffusion can be remarkably changed by controlling the cis-to-trans isomerization of the functional unit due to the tunable adsorbate-adsorbent and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions of the two states. With the optimal length of the functional chain, the spatial hindrance and adsorbate-adsorbent interaction exhibit a synergetic effect to maximize the stimuli-responsive kinetic separation of N₂ over CO₂. This work provides a promising strategy for elevating smart MOFs' potential in gas separation.

Nanoconfinement and mass transport in metal-organic frameworks

The ubiquity of metal-organic frameworks in recent scientific literature underscores their highly versatile nature. MOFs have been developed for use in a wide array of applications, including: sensors, catalysis, separations, drug delivery, and electrochemical processes. Often overlooked in the discussion of MOF-based materials is the mass transport of guest molecules within the pores and channels. Given the wide distribution of pore sizes, linker functionalization, and crystal sizes, molecular diffusion within MOFs can be highly dependent on the MOF-guest system. In this review, we discuss the major factors that govern the mass transport of molecules through MOFs at both the intracrystalline and intercrystalline scale; provide an overview of the experimental and computational methods used to measure guest diffusivity within MOFs; and highlight the relevance of mass transfer in the applications of MOFs in electrochemical systems, separations, and heterogeneous catalysis.

A review of common practices in gravimetric and volumetric adsorption kinetic experiments

The availability of commercial gravimetric and volumetric systems for the measurement of adsorption equilibrium has seen also a growth of the use of these instruments to measure adsorption kinetics. A review of publications from the past 20 years has been used to assess common practice in 180 cases. There are worrying trends observed, such as lack of information on the actual conditions used in the experiment and the fact that the analysis of the data is often based on models that do not apply to the experimental systems used. To provide guidance to users of these techniques this contribution is divided into two parts: a discussion of the appropriate models to describe diffusion in porous materials is presented for different gravimetric and volumetric systems, followed by a structured discussion of the main trends in common practice uncovered reviewing a large number of recent publications. We conclude with recommendations for best practice to avoid incorrect interpretation of these experiments.
