Product selectivity and mass transport in levulinic acid transfer hydrogenation by monolithic MIL-100, MIL-88B and ZIF-8@Pd MOFs

The diffusion processes between adsorbent and adsorbate naturally play a significant role in the efficiency and selectivity of the heterogenous catalytic process. This paper considers the importance of diffusion processes in the transfer hydrogenation reaction of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone by MIL-88B, MIL-100, and ZIF8@Pd monolithic catalysts. Over a period of five catalytic cycles, it was shown that the Fe-based catalysts can achieve similar conversions to the ZIF-8 supported Pd, with the only current limitation being the lower aqueous stability of these MOFs. Diffusion constants were calculated using the ZLC method, with micropore diffusion limitation found for ZIF-8 and MIL-100 monolithic frameworks at 2.7 x 10^-8 and 4.6 x 10^-8 cm² s^-1 respectively. This diffusion limitation was also confirmed by IR spectroscopy with an increasing concentration of C-H bands on the MOF substrate post-reaction. Mass transfer coefficients, also calculated by ZLC, revealed increased mass transport for the hydrophobic ZIF-8 framework, which perhaps aids in the γ-valerolactone selectivity over side products that are produced in the absence of catalytic material, as seen for MIL-88B and MIL-100 after multiple uses.

Simultaneous Estimation of Gas Adsorption Equilibria and Kinetics of Individual Shaped Adsorbents

Shaped adsorbents (e.g., pellets, extrudates) are typically employed in several gas separation and sensing applications. The performance of these adsorbents is dictated by two key factors, their adsorption equilibrium capacity and kinetics. Often, adsorption equilibrium and textural properties are reported for materials. Adsorption kinetics are seldom presented due to the challenges associated with measuring them. The overarching goal of this work is to develop an approach to characterize the adsorption properties of individual shaped adsorbents with less than 100 mg of material. To this aim, we have developed an experimental dynamic sorption setup and complemented it with mathematical models, to describe the mass transport in the system. We embed these models into a derivative-free optimizer to predict model parameters for adsorption equilibrium and kinetics. We evaluate and independently validate the performance of our approach on three adsorbents that exhibit differences in their chemistry, synthesis, formulation, and textural properties. Further, we test the robustness of our mathematical framework using a digital twin. We show that the framework can rapidly (i.e., in a few hours) and quantitatively characterize adsorption properties at a milligram scale, making it suitable for the screening of novel porous materials.

Cation Ordering and Exsolution in Copper-Containing Forms of the Flexible Zeolite Rho (Cu,M-Rho; M=H, Na) and Their Consequences for CO2 Adsorption

The flexibility of the zeolite Rho framework offers great potential for tunable molecular sieving. The fully copper-exchanged form of Rho and mixed Cu,H- and Cu,Na-forms have been prepared. EPR spectroscopy reveals that Cu2+ ions are present in the dehydrated forms and Rietveld refinement shows these prefer S6R sites, away from the d8r windows that control diffusion. Fully exchanged Cu-Rho remains in an open form upon dehydration, the d8r windows remain nearly circular and the occupancy of window sites is low, so that it adsorbs CO2 rapidly at room temperature. Breakthrough tests with 10 % CO2 /40 % CH4 mixtures show that Cu4.9 -Rho is able to produce pure methane, albeit with a relatively low capacity at this pCO2 due to the weak interaction of CO2 with Cu cations. This is in strong contrast to Na-Rho, where cations in narrow elliptical window sites enable CO2 to be adsorbed with high selectivity and uptake but too slowly to enable the production of pure methane in similar breakthrough experiments. A series of Cu,Na-Rho materials was prepared to improve uptake and selectivity compared to Cu-Rho, and kinetics compared to Na-Rho. Remarkably, Cu,Na-Rho with >2 Cu cations per unit cell exhibited exsolution, due to the preference of Na cations for narrow S8R sites in distorted Rho and of Cu cations for S6R sites in the centric, open form of Rho. The exsolved Cu,Na-Rho showed improved performance in CO2 /CH4 breakthrough tests, producing pure CH4 with improved uptake and CO2 /CH4 selectivity compared to that of Cu4.9 -Rho.
