Perceived HIV Risk Among Black MSM Who Maintain HIV-Negativity in New York City

"Honesty, Communication and Trust Are What Bring Peace of Mind": Narratives of HIV Risk Among Hispanic/Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men in the Southern United States

For Hispanic/Latino MSM (HLMSM) in the South, HIV burden remains high, and HIV elimination is a national priority. Between July and September 2016, using a strengths-based approach informed by resilience theory, we conducted qualitative interviews with HIV-negative HLMSM in five southern cities in the United States with elevated HIV prevalence. We analyzed data using a qualitative content analysis approach, assessing for interrater reliability. A brief behavioral survey was also conducted. We enrolled 51 HLMSM (mean age = 33 years, range = 15-63). HLMSM discussed the climate of fear about HIV and homosexuality impeding HIV prevention, including the impact of stigma and taboo. Three main strengths-based strategies emerged for preventing HIV: assessing partner risk, establishing boundaries for sexual interactions, and self-education. Future HIV prevention efforts may benefit from balancing risk-based approaches with those that emphasize resilience, address partner trustworthiness and safety, and focus on providing novel outlets for HIV prevention education.

Initial Development and Validation of the Brief Internalized Heterosexist Racism Scale for Gay and Bisexual Black Men: A Measure of Internalized Heterosexist Racism

We introduce internalized heterosexist racism (IHR), or the internalization of damaging stereotypes, harmful beliefs, and negative attitudes about being a sexual minority person of color. We also present the initial development and validation of the Brief Internalized Heterosexist Racism Scale for gay and bisexual Black men (IHR-GBBM), a unidimensional, 10-item measure of IHR. Exploratory factor analyses on an internet-obtained sample of gay and bisexual Black men (N = 312; Mean age = 30.36 years) show that the IHR-GBBM had evidence of good internal consistency, and good convergent, discriminant, concurrent, and incremental validity. The IHR-GBBM was positively correlated with internalized racism, internalized heterosexism, and discrimination (racist, heterosexist). IHR was also negatively correlated with race stigma consciousness, weakly positively correlated with sexual identity stigma consciousness, but not correlated with either race identity, sexual identity, or social desirability. Hierarchical regressions showed that the IHR-GBBM explained an additional variance of 2.8% and 3.1% in anxiety symptoms and substance use coping, respectively, after accounting for (1) sociodemographics, (2) internalized racism and internalized heterosexism, and (3) an interaction of internalized racism and internalized heterosexism. Older participants and those who were "out" about their sexual identity reported lower IHR. Those who did not know/want to report their HIV status reported greater IHR. Results revealed no sexual identity, sexual position, relationship status, income, education, or employment status differences in IHR. We hope the development of the IHR-GBBM spurs future research on predictors and consequences of IHR. We discuss limitations and implications for the future study of internalized heterosexist racism.

Leveraging Resilience-supportive Strategies to Enhance Protective Factors in Young Sexual Minority Men: A Scoping Review of HIV Behavioral Interventions Implemented in High-income Countries

Behavioral HIV interventions focused on strengthening young sexual minority men's (SMM) internal (assets) and external (resources) protective factors are promising, yet their evaluation as resilience-supportive strategies to minimize or negate HIV-related risks remain understudied. The objective of this scoping review was to describe resilience-supportive intervention strategies that have been used to achieve desired HIV behavioral outcomes and to identify how these strategies have been evaluated using a resilience analytic framework. Our scoping review uncovered 271 peer-reviewed articles, of which 38 were eligible for inclusion based on our review criteria. The majority of interventions relied on social support strategies as their primary resilience-supportive strategy. A third of interventions reviewed analyzed their findings from a deficits-focused model, another third used compensatory resilience models, and the remaining interventions employed a hybrid (i.e., deficit and compensatory model) strategy. None of the interventions evaluated their intervention effects using a risk-protective model. From our synthesis regarding the current state of research around resilience-informed interventions, we propose strategies to inform the design of resilience-supportive approaches and make recommendations to move the field forward on how to develop, implement, and measure young SMM's resiliency processes.

Factors Associated With HIV Testing Among MSM in Guilin, China: Results From a Cross-Sectional Study

Objectives: The objective of this study is to explore factors affecting the HIV testing behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Guilin, China from April to June of 2021. Questionnaire data of 300 MSM were analyzed, and binary logistic regression models were used to examine the socio-demographic and sexual behavior characteristics associated with three HIV testing behaviors (self-testing, institutional testing, and regular testing).

Results: The results showed that half of the respondents had the habit of regular HIV testing. Only 30.0% of MSM chose to do HIV testing after high-risk sexual behavior, and self-perceived luck was the main reason for not having HIV testing. Moreover, the influencing factors of three HIV testing behaviors after high-risk sexual behavior differ. Interestingly, income was not related to any of the three HIV testing behaviors among those MSM who participated.

Conclusion: This research indicates insufficient health education on HIV testing behaviors among MSM in China. Health promotion practices targeting the MSM population to improve HIV-related knowledge, thus contributing to the HIV epidemic, are required.
