Exploring Attitudes Toward "Sugar Relationships" Across 87 Countries: A Global Perspective on Exchanges of Resources for Sex and Companionship

The current study investigates attitudes toward one form of sex for resources: the so-called sugar relationships, which often involve exchanges of resources for sex and/or companionship. The present study examined associations among attitudes toward sugar relationships and relevant variables (e.g., sex, sociosexuality, gender inequality, parasitic exposure) in 69,924 participants across 87 countries. Two self-report measures of Acceptance of Sugar Relationships (ASR) developed for younger companion providers (ASR-YWMS) and older resource providers (ASR-OMWS) were translated into 37 languages. We tested cross-sex and cross-linguistic construct equivalence, cross-cultural invariance in sex differences, and the importance of the hypothetical predictors of ASR. Both measures showed adequate psychometric properties in all languages (except the Persian version of ASR-YWMS). Results partially supported our hypotheses and were consistent with previous theoretical considerations and empirical evidence on human mating. For example, at the individual level, sociosexual orientation, traditional gender roles, and pathogen prevalence were significant predictors of both ASR-YWMS and ASR-OMWS. At the country level, gender inequality and parasite stress positively predicted the ASR-YWMS. However, being a woman negatively predicted the ASR-OMWS, but positively predicted the ASR-YWMS. At country-level, ingroup favoritism and parasite stress positively predicted the ASR-OMWS. Furthermore, significant cross-subregional differences were found in the openness to sugar relationships (both ASR-YWMS and ASR-OMWS scores) across subregions. Finally, significant differences were found between ASR-YWMS and ASR-OMWS when compared in each subregion. The ASR-YWMS was significantly higher than the ASR-OMWS in all subregions, except for Northern Africa and Western Asia.

The experience of stigma in family caregivers of people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders: A meta-synthesis study

Introduction

Schizophrenia is a chronic disabling and the most stigmatizing mental disorder worldwide. The stigma experienced by family caregivers impacts their lives in different ways. This study reports the results of qualitative synthesis to understand the perceptions and experiences of stigma in families of people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders across various socio-cultural contexts.

Methods

An initial comprehensive search was performed in databases like Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, and Ovid-based MEDLINE. By searching, 3560 studies were found, of which 16 articles were included in the present study. A meta-synthesis was done according to the meta-ethnographic approach.

Result

Three themes were generated: perpetuated stigma by general misunderstandings about schizophrenia, mental health inequality contributes to structural stigma, and long-term family caregiving stigmas, attitudes, and coping strategies. These themes indicated the essential experiences of stigma in families of people with schizophrenia, which appeared due to unknown and socio-cultural misconceptions of schizophrenia that led to emotional challenges for family caregivers.

Conclusion

This study addresses stigma-related issues, and coping strategies used almost exclusively by family caregivers. Health policymakers and healthcare professionals working in mental health institutions should consider this data. Substantial steps must be taken to combat stigma, with education initiatives topping the list.

Transactional Desire: Exploring Male Student Sex Workers in China

This paper presents a descriptive study of Chinese male student sex workers through a grounded theory analysis of 25 semi-structured one-to-one online interviews. We found that the internet and introductions by peers were the two primary channels for Chinese male students to enter the sex industry. Most students were motivated to be involved in commercial sex by a mixture of consumption and sexual desires. Student sex workers motivated mainly by sexual desire often selected clients and considered commercial sex as "transactional hookups." Student sex workers used strategies, including concealing, separating sex and love, simulating boyfriend experiences, and terminating romantic relationships, to deal with the stigmas they encountered. Sexual health and sexually transmitted disease prevention-oriented sexuality education in China had positive impacts on male student sex workers, but we also found the need for more comprehensive sexuality education. As emerging adults, college students are in a life stage distinct from adolescents and adults. We believe student sex work, as well as emerging adult sex work in general, needs to be differentiated from voluntary adult sex work in both scholarly research and public discussions of the legal status of sex work, especially in cases where students are not informed about the risks of engaging in commercial sex.

Student nurses' perceptions and experiences in caring for people living with HIV/AIDS: a qualitative study

BACKGROUND

Caring for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) requires clinical experience and quality care delivery skills. This study aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of nursing students in caring for PLWHAs.

METHODS

This qualitative descriptive study interviewed 18 student nurses who had cared for PLWHAs from 14 tertiary hospitals across 7 provinces in China through semi-structured telephone interviews.

RESULTS

Two themes emerged from the narratives: student nurses' perceptions and attitudes toward PLWHAs and student nurses' practical experiences with PLWHAs. Five theme clusters were revealed, namely "negative attitudes held before the care-giving," "a series of psychological struggles in care-giving," "favorable attitudes increased after the care-giving," "consensus on care delivery for PLWHAs," and "considerations regarding contamination reduction."

CONCLUSIONS

Findings shed light on the development and changes in student nurses' perspectives on PLWHAs throughout their clinical experiences. Student nurses' perceptions and attitudes toward PLWHAs progressed through three distinct stages, and positive changes were observed after care-giving. Participants' perceptions and practical experiences with patients with AIDS enable patients to receive fair and high-quality care and provide valuable insights for nursing educators better prepare HIV nurses.
