Abstract
BACKGROUND The practice environment influences the quality of care and the nursing outcomes achieved in their workplaces. AIMS To examine the perception of the clinical practice environment among nurses working in mental health units in the context of their participation in an action research study aimed at improving the nurse-patient relationship. METHOD An explanatory sequential mixed methods study was designed. The data were collected in three phases in 18 mental health units (n = 95 nurses). Quantitative data were collected through the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, and qualitative data were collected through reflective diaries and focus groups in the context of participatory action research. RESULTS The nurses' assessment of their practice environment shifted from positive to negative. Nurse manager leadership was the aspect that worsened the most. In addition, the perception of their participation in the affairs of the center and nursing foundations for quality of care decreased. The nurses considered it essential to be able to influence decision-making bodies and that the institution should promote a model of care that upholds the therapeutic relationship in actual clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS Nurses perceived that they should be involved in organizational decisions and required more presence and understanding from managers. Furthermore, nurses stated that institutions should promote nursing foundations for quality of care. This study contributes to understanding how nurses in mental health units perceive their work environment and how it affects the improvement of the nurse-patient relationship in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute psychiatric units are found to be stressful working environments because of the nature of illness patients present with. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine self-reported incidents of physical and verbal violence towards nurses working in acute psychiatric units in Western Cape, South Africa. METHOD A questionnaire was used to collect data. Chi-square test was performed to determine association between gender, category and experience of violence. Mann-Whitney U test was carried out to determine associations between years of employment and the likelihood of experiencing physical violence and verbal abuse. RESULTS Overall physical violence 35 (34.3%) and verbal abuse 83 (83%) incidents. Most female respondents reported both physical violence (74.2%, n = 26) and verbal abuse (72.2%, n = 60), with (56.2%, n = 18) professional nurses reporting physical violence. Years of employment was statistically significantly associated with the likelihood of nurses experiencing physical violence (p = 0.007). CONCLUSION Most respondents (74.2%, n = 26) were females and they mostly experienced physical violence and verbal abuse while 28.2% (n = 29) were males. Years of service were associated with the likelihood of experiencing physical violence.Contribution: The knowledge gained will add on existing knowledge about the challenge of violence experienced by nurses in the workplace and might have an influence on policymakers.

Abstract
Participatory action research (PAR) is a method of inquiry that promotes a collaborative approach to knowledge creation. This article examined areas of research interest that included PAR methods, highlighting the areas of improvement that such approaches might offer to researchers and scientists in the nursing field. Among the 20 included studies, participatory concepts are more likely used to direct research design than to select participants. About two-thirds of the studies reviewed used PAR principles in designing projects. Although only a few research collaborative efforts involved partners in selecting participants, 70% involved participants in data gathering. Participatory approaches to data processing and interpretation were found in over 60% of articles assessed across all content categories. Approximately half of the studies included suggestions for participatory implementation approaches; a quarter discussed participatory ways to disseminate results. The findings demonstrate how researchers are incorporating PAR principles into a variety of areas of nursing research. Promises to fully include participants and promises of reciprocal benefit are essential in order to pursue meaningful PAR.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to critically examine the process and results of a participatory action study designed to implement intentional rounding on a rehabilitation inpatient service. As a change initiative, this brief case study highlights the successes and challenges of implementing a practice intervention. Intentional rounding is a nursing intervention whereby hourly contact and support is provided to patients and families to strengthen the therapeutic relationship and proactively address their needs. Three units implemented rounding, and pre- and post-data were collected on four indicators: patient falls, call bell frequencies, satisfaction with care, and the nurses' practice environment. The results demonstrated small, positive changes in all indicators, but the level of rounding was lower than expected. Focus groups revealed the complexities of integrating rounding into established routines. Three factors were identified that contributed to the findings.

Abstract
The aim of the present integrative review is to identify and describe risk factors and triggers that may result in patient-initiated violence on inpatient psychiatric units. Original studies were searched for in PubMed, PsycINFO, and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. From the 826 identified publications, 18 were included for a synthesis. The results are presented in three themes, which demonstrate that patient characteristics, staff approach, and the ward environment are influencers that may trigger the emergence of violent incidents. Incidents are discussed from the theoretical framework of complexity science as dynamic, highly variable in manifestation, and adaptive, in that the forthcoming process and outcomes are highly dependent on how the surrounding environment responds. Our recommendation is that staff on inpatient wards recognize the myriad influencers that may trigger inpatient violence in a context of highly complex interactions.
