The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a well-established medical system with a long history. Currently, artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly expanding in many fields including TCM. AI will significantly improve the reliability and accuracy of diagnostics, thus increasing the use of effective therapeutic methods for patients. This systematic review provides an updated overview on the major breakthroughs in the field of AI-assisted TCM four diagnostic methods, syndrome differentiation, and treatment. AI-assisted TCM diagnosis is mainly based on digital data collected by modern electronic instruments, which makes TCM diagnosis more quantitative, objective, and standardized. As a result, the diagnosis decisions made by different TCM doctors exhibit more consistency, accuracy, and reliability. Meanwhile, the therapeutic efficacy of TCM can be evaluated objectively. Therefore, AI is promoting TCM from experience to evidence-based medicine, a genuine scientific revolution. Furthermore, huge and non-uniform knowledge on formula-syndrome relationships and the combination rules of herbal TCM formulae could be better standardized with the help of AI analysis, which is necessary for the clinical efficacy evaluation and further optimization on the standardized TCM formulae. AI bridges the gap between TCM and modern science and technology. AI may bring clinical TCM diagnostics closer to western medicine. With the help of AI, more scientific evidence about TCM will be discovered. It can be expected that more unified guidelines for specific TCM syndromes will be issued with the development of AI-assisted TCM therapies in the future.

A novel Chinese herbal medicine clustering algorithm via artificial bee colony optimization

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has become popular and been viewed as an effective clinical treatment across the world. Accordingly, there is an ever-increasing interest in performing data analysis over TCM data. Aiming to cope with the problem of excessively depending on empirical values when selecting cluster centers by traditional clustering algorithms, an improved artificial bee colony algorithm is proposed by which to automatically select cluster centers and apply it to aggregate Chinese herbal medicines. The proposed method integrates the following new techniques: (1) improving the artificial bee colony algorithm by applying a new searching strategy of neighbour nectar, (2) employing the improved artificial bee colony algorithm to optimize the parameters of the cutoff distance d_c, the local density ρ_i and the minimum distance δ_i between the element i and any other element with higher density in the cluster algorithm by fast search and finding of density peaks (called DP algorithm) to find the optimal cluster centers, in order to clustering herbal medicines in an accurate fashion with the guarantee of runtime performance. Extensive experiments were conducted on the UCI benchmark datasets and the TCM datasets and the results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing it with classical clustering algorithms including K-means, K-mediods and DBSCAN in multiple evaluation metrics, that is, Silhouette Coefficient, Entropy, Purity, Precision, Recall and F1-Measure. The results show that the IABC-DP algorithm outperforms other approaches with good clustering quality and accuracy on the UCI and the TCM datasets as well. In addition, it can be found that the improved artificial bee colony algorithm can effectively reduce the number of iterations when compared to the traditional bee colony algorithm. In particular, the IABC-DP algorithm is applied to cluster multi-dimensional Chinese herbal medicines and the result shows that it outperforms other clustering algorithms in clustering Chinese herbal medicines, which can contribute to a larger effort targeted at advancing the study of discovering composition rules of traditional Chinese prescriptions.

An Ensemble Learning Based Framework for Traditional Chinese Medicine Data Analysis with ICD-10 Labels

Objective. This study aims to establish a model to analyze clinical experience of TCM veteran doctors. We propose an ensemble learning based framework to analyze clinical records with ICD-10 labels information for effective diagnosis and acupoints recommendation. Methods. We propose an ensemble learning framework for the analysis task. A set of base learners composed of decision tree (DT) and support vector machine (SVM) are trained by bootstrapping the training dataset. The base learners are sorted by accuracy and diversity through nondominated sort (NDS) algorithm and combined through a deep ensemble learning strategy. Results. We evaluate the proposed method with comparison to two currently successful methods on a clinical diagnosis dataset with manually labeled ICD-10 information. ICD-10 label annotation and acupoints recommendation are evaluated for three methods. The proposed method achieves an accuracy rate of 88.2%  ±  2.8% measured by zero-one loss for the first evaluation session and 79.6%  ±  3.6% measured by Hamming loss, which are superior to the other two methods. Conclusion. The proposed ensemble model can effectively model the implied knowledge and experience in historic clinical data records. The computational cost of training a set of base learners is relatively low.

Advances in Patient Classification for Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Machine Learning Perspective

As a complementary and alternative medicine in medical field, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has drawn great attention in the domestic field and overseas. In practice, TCM provides a quite distinct methodology to patient diagnosis and treatment compared to western medicine (WM). Syndrome (ZHENG or pattern) is differentiated by a set of symptoms and signs examined from an individual by four main diagnostic methods: inspection, auscultation and olfaction, interrogation, and palpation which reflects the pathological and physiological changes of disease occurrence and development. Patient classification is to divide patients into several classes based on different criteria. In this paper, from the machine learning perspective, a survey on patient classification issue will be summarized on three major aspects of TCM: sign classification, syndrome differentiation, and disease classification. With the consideration of different diagnostic data analyzed by different computational methods, we present the overview for four subfields of TCM diagnosis, respectively. For each subfield, we design a rectangular reference list with applications in the horizontal direction and machine learning algorithms in the longitudinal direction. According to the current development of objective TCM diagnosis for patient classification, a discussion of the research issues around machine learning techniques with applications to TCM diagnosis is given to facilitate the further research for TCM patient classification.

Therapeutic efficacy of Hypericum perforatum L. extract for mice infected with an influenza A virus

Hypericum perforatum L., a plant used in Chinese herbal medicine, has been proven effective against many viral diseases. In the present study, the therapeutic efficacy of an extract of H. perforatum (HPE) against influenza A virus (IAV) was investigated in mice. Whether HPE would be a promising agent for influenza treatment was evaluated by measuring the protection rate, mean survival days, lung index, and viral titer, as well as the secretion of IL-6, interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in lung tissue and serum on days 3 and 5 post-infection. The results showed that HPE could reduce the lung index and viral titer of mice infected with IAV, decrease mortality, and prolong the mean survival time. HPE decreased the concentration of IL-6 and TNF-α in lung tissue and serum on day 5 post-infection. In contrast, HPE enhanced the lung and serum levels of IL-10 and IFN-γ on the days 3 and 5 post-infection. Our study indicates that HPE has significant therapeutic efficacy for mice infected with IAV. The possible reasons for these results were concluded to be pertaining to up-regulating the expression of IL-10 and IFN-γ, and down-regulating the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α in lung and serum.
