Terahertz refractive index-based morphological dilation for breast carcinoma delineation

This paper reports investigations led on the combination of the refractive index and morphological dilation to enhance performances towards breast tumour margin delineation during conserving surgeries. The refractive index map of invasive ductal and lobular carcinomas were constructed from an inverse electromagnetic problem. Morphological dilation combined with refractive index thresholding was conducted to classify the tissue regions as malignant or benign. A histology routine was conducted to evaluate the performances of various dilation geometries associated with different thresholds. It was found that the combination of a wide structuring element and high refractive index was improving the correctness of tissue classification in comparison to other configurations or without dilation. The method reports a sensitivity of around 80% and a specificity of 82% for the best case. These results indicate that combining the fundamental optical properties of tissues denoted by their refractive index with morphological dilation may open routes to define supporting procedures during breast-conserving surgeries.

Oocyte Positional Recognition for Automatic Manipulation in ICSI

Polar body position detection is a necessary process in the automation of micromanipulation systems specifically used in intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) applications. The polar body is an intracellular structure, which accommodates the chromosomes, and the injection must not only avoid this structure but be at the furthest point away from it. This paper aims to develop a vision recognition system for the recognition of the oocyte and its polar body in order to be used to inform the automated injection mechanism to avoid the polar body. The novelty of the paper is its capability to determine the position and orientation of the oocyte and its polar body. The gradient-weighted Hough transform method was employed for the detection of the location of the oocyte and its polar body. Moreover, a new elliptical fitting method was employed for size measurement of the polar bodies and oocytes for the allowance of morphological variance of the oocytes and their polar bodies. The proposed algorithm has been designed to be adaptable with typical commercial inverted microscopes with different criteria. The successful experimental results for this algorithm produce maximum errors of 5% for detection and 10% for reporting respectively.

Fuzzy Concept Lattices and Fuzzy Relation Equations in the Retrieval Processing of Images and Signals

This paper considers the introduced relations between fuzzy property-oriented concept lattices and fuzzy relation equations, on the one hand, and mathematical morphology, on the other hand, in the retrieval processing of images and signals. In the first part, it studies how the original images and signals can be retrieved using fuzzy property-oriented concept lattices and fuzzy relation equations. In the second one we analyze two of the most important tools in fuzzy mathematical morphology from the point of view of the fuzzy property-oriented concepts and the aforementioned study. Both parts are illustrated with practical examples.
