Morphometric variation of Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae) associated with three Sigmodontinae (Rodentia: Cricetidae) from the north of Chile

Molecular survey of tick-borne infectious agents in cricetid rodents (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in Central and Southern Chile

Tick-borne infectious agents (TBIAs) include several bacteria and protozoa that can infect vertebrates, including humans. Some of these agents can cause important diseases from both a public health perspective, such as Lyme disease, and from an animal health and production viewpoint, such as Texas fever. In Chile, several studies have assessed the presence of tick-borne disease agents in vectors and mammal hosts, mainly in the northern regions, but few studies have assessed the presence of these agents in Central and Southern Chile. This study aimed to assess the presence of three groups of TBIAs-Borrelia, Anaplasmataceae, and Piroplasmida-in cricetid rodents of Central and Southern Chile. A total of 207 specimens from 13 localities between the O'Higgins and Los Lagos regions were captured. DNA was extracted from the liver and spleen, and subsequently underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification targeting the 16S rRNA, flaB, and 18S rRNA genes to detect DNA from Borrelia, Anaplasmataceae, and Piroplasmida, respectively. Although no DNA from these TBIAs was detected, the DNA extraction process was validated by optimal DNA purity ratios (an A260/A280 ratio within the 1.6-2.0 range) and successful internal control amplification in all samples. These results, in addition to findings from previous reports, suggest a very low prevalence of these TBIAs in the rodent population studied. Further research into the factors influencing the presence of these agents and their vectors will provide insight into the reasons underlying this low prevalence.

An integrative approach to explore species limits in Laelaps mazzai Fonseca, 1939 (Mesostigmata, Laelapidae), a South American widespread mite parasitizing the cricetid Calomys Waterhouse, 1837

Laelaps mazzai Fonseca, 1939 (Mesostigmata, Laelapidae) parasitizes several species of the widespread South American rodent genus Calomys Waterhouse, 1837. Morphological variation has been noticed within this laelapid but has yet to be analyzed. Since several other species of laelapids that initially were considered generalists have resulted in host-specific species, after further analyses, herein we explored, through morphology and genetics, the variation of this parasite across six species of Calomys, trying to establish if it constitutes a polymorphic species or a complex of cryptic host specific-species. An integrative approach was applied, including principal component and discriminant analyses of females and males and DNA sequences (nuclear region ITS and the COI gene). The obtained results indicate that female mites tend to differentiate only the sizes of their dorsal shield among host species but with extensive overlapping. At the same time the males lack metrical differentiation, and the genetic evidence failed to resolve specific-species clades. We conclude that L. mazzai is a single widespread mite with little genetic and phenotypic differentiation.

Parasites of Native and Invasive Rodents in Chile: Ecological and Human Health Needs

Invasive populations are a threat to biodiversity, resulting in the loss of species, and also a threat to human health, participating in the reservoir of diseases. Rodents are among the most important invasive species worldwide. Chile is a country that features island conditions in terms of geography and has been widely invaded by allochthonous rodents. In this mini-review, we updated the literature on macro-parasites infecting both native and invasive rodents and of vector-borne pathogens in continental Chile in order to assess the relative importance of invasive rodents from both ecological and public health points of view. A total of 174 parasite species were found, with Siphonaptera representing the most diverse group. When examining how parasites are shared between native and introduced rodents, the analysis suggests that parasites circulate freely within recipient populations, and are not significantly transmitted from source populations. Further, generalist parasites are typically more prone to being shared between native and introduced rodents. Most zoonotic parasites were reported in invasive rodents, suggesting that these rodents must represent a public health concern. Although several vector-borne pathogens have been reported in rodents or ectoparasites, most of the recently emerging research has illustrated that there is a lack of evidence on rodent-vector-borne zoonoses in most pathogens.
