Testing the Invariance of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey's Sexual Behavior Questionnaire Across Gender, Ethnicity/Race, and Generation

Undergraduate student perceptions of cognitive behavioral therapy, aerobic exercise, and their combination for depression

OBJECTIVE

Both aerobic exercise and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) improve depression, but perceptions of their credibility and efficacy are underexplored. These perceptions can contribute to treatment seeking and outcome. A previous online sample ranging in age and education rated a combined treatment higher than individual components and underestimated their efficacy. The current study is a replication exclusively focused on college students.

PARTICIPANTS

Undergraduates (N = 260) participated during the 2021-2022 school year.

METHODS

Students reported impressions of each treatment's credibility, efficacy, difficulty, and recovery rate.

RESULTS

Students viewed combined therapy as potentially better, but also more difficult, and underestimated recovery rates, replicating previous work. Their efficacy ratings significantly underestimated both meta-analytic estimates and the previous sample's perceptions.

CONCLUSIONS

Consistent underestimation of treatment effectiveness suggests that realistic education could prove especially beneficial. Students might be more willing than the broader population to accept exercise as a treatment or adjunct for depression.

Sexual minority health and allostatic load in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey: A systematic scoping review with intersectional implications

Understood largely from a minority stress framework, sexual minorities (SM) are hypothesized to suffer more physical and mental health burdens compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Several studies have used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States to assess SM health disparities and the 'wear and tear' of allostatic load. Because findings are generally mixed and sometimes contradictory with sexual minority stress theory, we endeavoured to explore existing NHANES studies of SM health. Our scoping review yielded a comprehensive analysis of all existing published articles (N = 43) that have used the NHANES to assess any outcome regarding SM health and well-being. Our synthesis confirms that SM sub-groups are significantly different from one another and from their heterosexual peers on several key health variables. Surprisingly, gay men appear to have the lowest allostatic load and no differences have yet been identified among women as a function of sexual identity/behavior. The existing literature suggests a need to use the NHANES more broadly and to include more psychosocial variables to better delineate sexual minority stress. This is especially important to consider at a physiological level in allostatic load research that should better include health behaviors available in NHANES and from other available datasets as moderators linking psychosocial exposures (e.g., minority stress) and health outcomes. Suggested future directions are proposed in an intersectional perspective that incorporates interactions among sex, gender, sexual identity/behaviors, race, ethnicity, age cohorts, socioeconomic status, and lived experiences.

A population-based analysis of life satisfaction and social support among children of diverse backgrounds in British Columbia, Canada

PURPOSE

The Satisfaction With Life Scale adapted for Children (SWLS-C) is a self-report measure of children's quality of life and has exhibited sound psychometric properties. In light of increasing ethno-cultural diversity, it is important to understand child life satisfaction across diverse subgroups. Employing children's language background as a proxy for cultural background among children in British Columbia, Canada, we examined (a) the cross-cultural measurement equivalence of the SWLS-C; and (b) cross-cultural relations of peer support and adult support with SWLS-C.

METHODS

Participants were 20,119 children (M_age 9.2; 50.2% boys) who provided data as part of a self-report child health survey (the Middle-years Development Instrument). Measurement equivalence across eight language/cultural background groups was tested via multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. Multi-level analyses were used to compare: a) SWLS-C means; and b) associations of peer support and adult support with SWLS-C scores, by language/cultural background.

RESULTS

Findings supported strict measurement equivalence between the English language/cultural background group and all other language/cultural background groups for the SWLS-C. Relative to the English language background group, SWLS-C means differed for several language/cultural background groups. Within every language/cultural background group, however, peer and adult support scale scores were significant positive correlates of SWLS-C scores.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provided evidence for measurement equivalence of a life satisfaction measure across children from diverse language/cultural backgrounds and identified between-group differences in the level of child life satisfaction that were generally consistent with prior theory and findings. Moreover, results provided evidence of promotive associations of adult support and peer support with life satisfaction among diverse groups of children.
