Plasma nitriding under low temperature improves the endothelial cell biocompatibility of 316L stainless steel

Insight into antibacterial effect of titanium nanotubular surfaces with focus on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Materials used for orthopedic implants should not only have physical properties close to those of bones, durability and biocompatibility, but should also exhibit a sufficient degree of antibacterial functionality. Due to its excellent properties, titanium is still a widely used material for production of orthopedic implants, but the unmodified material exhibits poor antibacterial activity. In this work, the physicochemical characteristics, such as chemical composition, crystallinity, wettability, roughness, and release of Ti ions of the titanium surface modified with nanotubular layers were analyzed and its antibacterial activity against two biofilm-forming bacterial strains responsible for prosthetic joint infection (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) was investigated. Electrochemical anodization (anodic oxidation) was used to prepare two types of nanotubular arrays with nanotubes differing in dimensions (with diameters of 73 and 118 nm and lengths of 572 and 343 nm, respectively). These two surface types showed similar chemistry, crystallinity, and surface energy. The surface with smaller nanotube diameter (TNT-73) but larger values of roughness parameters was more effective against S. aureus. For P. aeruginosa the sample with a larger nanotube diameter (TNT-118) had better antibacterial effect with proven cell lysis. Antibacterial properties of titanium nanotubular surfaces with potential in implantology, which in our previous work demonstrated a positive effect on the behavior of human gingival fibroblasts, were investigated in terms of surface parameters. The interplay between nanotube diameter and roughness appeared critical for the bacterial fate on nanotubular surfaces. The relationship of nanotube diameter, values of roughness parameters, and other surface properties to bacterial behavior is discussed in detail. The study is believed to shed more light on how nanotubular surface parameters and their interplay affect antibacterial activity.

Surface Modification of an Absorbable Bimodal Fe-Mn-Ag Alloy by Nitrogen Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation

Recently, Fe-Mn-based alloys have been increasingly catching the attention of the scientific community, because of their tunable and outstanding mechanical properties, and suitable degradation behavior for biomedical applications. In spite of these assets, their corrosion rate (CR) is, in general, too low to satisfy the requirements that need to be met for cardiovascular device applications, such as stents. In fact, the CR is not always the same for all of the degradation stages of the material, and in addition, a finely tuned release rate, especially during the first steps of the corrosion pattern, is often demanded. In this work, a resorbable bimodal multi-phase alloy Fe-3Mn-1Ag was designed by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering (SPS) to accelerate the corrosion rate. The presence of several phases, for example α-Fe, α-Mn, γ-FeMn and Ag, provided the material with excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength UTS = 722 MPa, tensile strain A = 38%) and a higher corrosion rate (CR = 3.2 ± 0.2 mm/year). However, higher corrosion rates, associated with an increased release of degradation elements, could also raise toxicity concerns, especially at the beginning of the corrosion pattern. In this study, The focus of the present work was the control of the CR by surface modification, with nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation (N-PIII) treatment that was applied to mechanically polished (MP) samples. This plasma treatment (PT) improved the corrosion resistance of the material, assessed by static degradation immersion tests (SDITs), especially during the first degradation stages. Twenty-eight days later, the degradation rate reached the same value of the MP condition. Nitrogen compounds on the surface of the substrate played an important role in the corrosion mechanism and corrosion product formation. The degradation analysis was carried out also by potentiodynamic tests in modified Hanks' balanced salt solution (MHBSS), and Dulbecco's phosphate buffered saline solution (DPBSS). The corrosion rate was higher in MHBSS for both conditions. However, there was no significant difference between the corrosion rate of the PT in DPBSS (CR = 1.9 ± 0.6 mm/year) and in MHBSS (CR = 2 ± 1.4 mm/year). The cell viability was assessed with human vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) via an indirect metabolic activity test (MTT assay). Due to the lower ion release of the PT condition, the cell viability increased significantly. Thus, nitrogen implantation can control the in vitro corrosion rate starting from the very first stage of the implantation, improving cell viability.

Integral Algorithms to Evaluate TiO2 and N-TiO2 Thin Films' Cytocompatibility

Titanium oxide (TiO₂) and oxynitride (N-TiO₂) coatings can increase nitinol stents' cytocompatibility with endothelial cells. Methods of TiO₂ and N-TiO₂ sputtering and cytocompatibility assessments vary significantly among different research groups, making it difficult to compare results. The aim of this work was to develop an integral cytocompatibility index (ICI) and a decision tree algorithm (DTA) using the "EA.hy926 cell/TiO₂ or N-TiO₂ coating" model and to determine the optimal cytocompatible coating. Magnetron sputtering was performed in a reaction gas medium with various N₂:O₂ ratios and bias voltages. The samples' morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The cytocompatibility of the coatings was evaluated in terms of their cytotoxicity, adhesion, viability, and NO production. The ICI and DTA were developed to assess the cytocompatibility of the samples. Both algorithms demonstrated the best cytocompatibility for the sample sputtered at U_bias = 0 V and a gas ratio of N₂:O₂ = 2:1, in which the rutile phase dominated. The DTA provided more detailed information about the cytocompatibility, which depended on the sputtering mode, surface morphology, and crystalline phase. The proposed mathematical models relate the cytocompatibility and the studied physical characteristics.

Surface engineering and the application of laser-based processes to stents - A review of the latest development

Late in-stent thrombus and restenosis still represent two major challenges in stents’ design. Surface treatment of stent is attracting attention due to the increasing importance of stenting intervention for coronary artery diseases. Several surface engineering techniques have been utilised to improve the biological response in vivo on a wide range of biomedical devices. As a tailorable, precise, and ultra-fast process, laser surface engineering offers the potential to treat stent materials and fabricate various 3D textures, including grooves, pillars, nanowires, porous and freeform structures, while also modifying surface chemistry through nitridation, oxidation and coatings. Laser-based processes can reduce the biodegradable materials' degradation rate, offering many advantages to improve stents’ performance, such as increased endothelialisation rate, prohibition of SMC proliferation, reduced platelet adhesion and controlled corrosion and degradation. Nowadays, adequate research has been conducted on laser surface texturing and surface chemistry modification. Laser texturing on commercial stents has been also investigated and a promotion of performance of laser-textured stents has been proved.

In this critical review, the influence of surface texture and surface chemistry on stents performance is firstly reviewed to understand the surface characteristics of stents required to facilitate cellular response. This is followed by the explicit illustration of laser surface engineering of stents and/or related materials. Laser induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) on stent materials is then explored, and finally the application of laser surface modification techniques on latest generation of stent devices is highlighted to provide future trends and research direction on laser surface engineering of stents.

From Austenitic Stainless Steel to Expanded Austenite-S Phase: Formation, Characteristics and Properties of an Elusive Metastable Phase

Austenitic stainless steels are employed in many industrial fields, due to their excellent corrosion resistance, easy formability and weldability. However, their low hardness, poor tribological properties and the possibility of localized corrosion in specific environments may limit their use. Conventional thermochemical surface treatments, such as nitriding or carburizing, are able to enhance surface hardness, but at the expense of corrosion resistance, owing to the formation of chromium-containing precipitates. An effective alternative is the so called low temperature treatments, which are performed with nitrogen- and/or carbon-containing media at temperatures, at which chromium mobility is low and the formation of precipitates is hindered. As a consequence, interstitial atoms are retained in solid solution in austenite, and a metastable supersaturated phase forms, named expanded austenite or S phase. Since the first studies, dating 1980s, the S phase has demonstrated to have high hardness and good corrosion resistance, but also other interesting properties and an elusive structure. In this review the main studies on the formation and characteristics of S phase are summarized and the results of the more recent research are also discussed. Together with mechanical, fatigue, tribological and corrosion resistance properties of this phase, electric and magnetic properties, wettability and biocompatibility are overviewed.

Effects of Surface Modification by Means of Low-Temperature Plasma Nitriding on Wetting and Corrosion Behavior of Austenitic Stainless Steel

Low-temperature nitriding of austenitic stainless steels produces modified surface layers, consisting mainly of the S phase, which improve surface hardness and corrosion resistance. Because of the localized plastic deformations, owing to modified layer formation, and ion bombardment occurring during the process itself, this treatment produces also modifications of surface morphology and roughness, which can affect wettability and corrosion behavior. In this study the effects of plasma nitriding, performed using different treatment conditions, on the surface morphology and roughness, and thus on wettability and corrosion resistance, of AISI 202 specimens with different initial finishings (2D and polished finishing) were investigated. Different probe liquids, having both high (bi-distilled water and solution of 3.5% NaCl) and low (ethanol and rapeseed oil) surface tension, were employed for assessing the wetting behavior with the sessile drop method. The contact angle values for water increased markedly when nitriding was performed on polished samples, while this increase was smaller for 2D samples, and on selected specimens a hydrophobic behavior was observed. Very low contact angle values were registered using low surface tension liquids, suggesting an oleophilic behavior. Corrosion resistance in a 5% NaCl solution was assessed, and it depended on the characteristics of the nitrided specimens.
