Can digestate recirculation promote biohythane production from two-stage co-digestion of rice straw and pig manure?

Digestate recirculation is often considered an important way to improve system stability (system acidification, ammonia inhibition, hydrolysis limitations, etc.) and gas production performance. However, it is not clear how the promotion of biohythane production works in anaerobic co-digestion with digestate recirculation of rice straw (RS) and pig manure (PM). Two sets of laboratory-scale two-stage continuous stirred tank reactors were operated continuously for 95 d to investigate the performance of biohythane production in the first/second phase under mesophilic (M)/thermophilic (T) and digestate recirculation conditions. Firstly, biohythane was not produced by PM with RS under digestate recirculation. The main reasons were: 1) Digestive recirculation promoted the growth of hydrogenotrophic methanogenic bacteria; and 2) limitations in hydrolysis. Secondly, digestate recirculation has positive effects on the removal rates (removal rates of TS, VS, polysaccharide, protein and TCOD increased by 30.4%, 22.3%, 9.9%, 31.4%, and 11.9%, respectively) and energy yield (up to 68.7%). Finally, there was a higher abundance of hydrogen-producing bacteria (Fervidobacterium [44.9%] and Coprothermobacter [18.8%]) in T2, accounting for >80% of the total, and of which the huge hydrogen production potential cannot be ignored. The results provide new ideas for alleviating the energy crisis and developing green energy in the future.

Bioelectrochemical regulation accelerates biomethane production from waste activated sludge: Focusing on operational performance and microbial community

Bioelectrochemical regulation represents a newly emerging strategy to enhance anaerobic digestion (AD) of biowastes. Herein, a novel microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) system, equipped with a pair of carbon brush anode and hybrid Ti/RuO₂-graphite felt cathode, was developed to explore the role of bioelectrochemical regulation in the proliferation/enrichment of functional microbes and methanation of waste activated sludge. The methane production was significantly improved by applying bioelectrochemical regulation. The maximum methane yield was 16.4 mL/L_-reactor at the applied external voltage 1.2 V and solids retention time 15 d, 8.6-time higher than that of a single AD. Further analysis demonstrated that bioelectrochemical regulation selectively enriched electroactive fermentative partners and methanogens (especially Thermincola, Methanobacterium) in the MEC-AD system and built up a robust syntrophic interaction. This drove the decomposition of complex organics and concurrent bioelectroreduction of CO₂ in biogas and subsequently enhanced methane generation. Besides, bioelectrochemical simulation attenuated N₂O emissions and enhanced the dewaterability of digested sludge.

Multiple Effects of Different Nickel Concentrations on the Stability of Anaerobic Digestion of Molasses

Molasses is a highly thick by-product produced after sugarcane crystallization constitutes large amounts of biodegradable organics. These organic compounds can be converted to renewable products through anaerobic digestion. Nevertheless, its anaerobic digestion is limited due to its high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ion concentration. The effects of nickel (Ni2+) on the stability of anaerobic digestion of molasses were established by studying the degradation of organic matter (COD removal rate), biogas yield, methane content in the biogas, pH, and alkalinity. The results showed that there were no significant effects on the stability of pH and alkalinity. Increased COD removal rate and higher methane content was observed by 2–3% in the digesters receiving 2 and 4 mg/L of Ni2+ in the first phase of the experiment. Ni2+ supplemented to reactors at concentration 2 mg/L enhanced biogas yield. Overall, it is suggested that the addition of Ni2+ has some effects on the enhancement of biogas yield and methane contents but has no obvious effects on the long-lasting stability of the molasses digestion.

Effect of viscosity on process stability and microbial community composition during anaerobic mesophilic digestion of Maotai-flavored distiller's grains

To investigate the effects of viscosity on the mesophilic digestion of Maotai-flavored distiller's grains, a continuous experiment was conducted in a 70 L reactor at organic loading rates of 3, 4, 5, and 6 g VS/(L·d) with and without effluent recirculation. High organic loading rates and continuous effluent recirculation increased the digestate viscosity, and high viscosity caused severe foaming, which blocked the biogas outlet pipe. Moreover, a viscosity above 782 mPa·s was proposed as an early warning indicator for foaming. A maximum volumetric biogas production rate of 1.72 L/(L·d) was accomplished by diluting the feed without effluent recirculation at a recommended organic loading rate of 5 g VS/(L·d). Proteiniphilum, Ruminococcus_2, norank_f_Synergistaceae, norank_o__DTU014, Syntrophomonas, Methanosarcina, Methanobacterium, and Methanosaeta were the dominant acidogens, syntrophic bacteria, and methanogens existed in both low and high viscosity groups. Candidatus_Methanofastidiosum capable of employing the methylated thiol reduction pathway was found only in the high viscosity system.

Performance of Anaerobic Digestion of Chicken Manure Under Gradually Elevated Organic Loading Rates

Poultry manure is the main source of agricultural and rural non-point source pollution, and its effective disposal through anaerobic digestion (AD) is of great significance; meanwhile, the high nitrogen content of chicken manure makes it a typical feedstock for anaerobic digestion. The performance of chicken-manure-based AD at gradient organic loading rates (OLRs) in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) was investigated herein. The whole AD process was divided into five stages according to different OLRs, and it lasted for 150 days. The results showed that the biogas yield increased with increasing OLR, which was based on the volatile solids (VS), before reaching up to 11.5 g VS/(L·d), while the methane content was kept relatively stable and maintained at approximately 60%. However, when the VS was further increased to 11.5 g VS/(L·d), the total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), pH, and alkalinity (CaCO₃) rose to 2560 mg·L^-1, 8.2, and 15,000 mg·L^-1, respectively, while the volumetric biogas production rate (VBPR), methane content, and VS removal efficiency decreased to 0.30 L·(L·d)^-1, 45%, and 40%, respectively. Therefore, the AD performance immediately deteriorated and ammonia inhibition occurred. Further analysis demonstrated that the microbial biomass yield and concentrations dropped dramatically in this period. These results indicated that the AD stayed steady when the OLR was lower than 11.5 g VS/(L·d); this also provides valuable information for improving the efficiency and stability of AD of a nitrogen-rich substrate.
