Improved Synthesis of Soluble Metal-Free/Metal Phthalocyanine Tetracarboxylic Acids and Their Application in the Catalytic Epoxidation of Cyclohexene

Mechanism Insights into Allylic Hydroxylation versus Epoxidation of Propene Catalyzed by Model Catalyst Iron Phthalocyanine in the Presence of Hydrogen Peroxide

High-valent metal-oxo species are key reactive intermediates in many biological and biological oxidation reactions. Herein, allylic hydroxylation (C-H) versus epoxidation (C═C) reactions of propene with a model catalyst iron phthalocyanine (FePc) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide were investigated contrastively, aiming to probe the active intermediates, structure-activity relationship, and reaction pathways. Our results showed that H2O2 as an oxygen-donor reagent can be easily decomposed on FePc to produce key active intermediates O═FePc and O═FePc═O with the energy barriers of 19.57 and 23.89 kcal/mol, respectively. In the selective oxidation of propene, O═FePc has a small preference for C═C epoxidation over C-H hydroxylation while O═FePc═O has a small preference for C-H hydroxylation. Since the electron-withdrawing O axial ligand in O═FePc═O further increases the radical character (Fe-O·) and Fe-O bond length of the iron-oxo moiety, O═FePc═O has better catalytic performance in both C═C epoxidation and C-H hydroxylation than O═FePc. Furthermore, in the whole reaction processes, the dual-hydrogen bonds between the two terminal H atoms of the alkene and allylic groups of propene and oxygen atom of the iron-oxo moiety would lead to the reaction toward C═C epoxidation while the single-hydrogen bond between the terminal H atom of the allylic group and the oxygen atom of the iron-oxo moiety would lead to the reaction toward C-H hydroxylation, implying that the weakly interacting hydrogen bonds affecting oxidation pathways also play a very important role in the regioselectivity of C═C epoxidation and C-H hydroxylation.

Phthalocyanines Synthesis: A State-of-The-Art Review of Sustainable Approaches Through Green Chemistry Metrics

Driven by escalating environmental concerns, synthetic chemistry faces an urgent need for a green revolution. Green chemistry, with its focus on low environmental impacting chemicals and minimized waste production, emerges as a powerful tool in addressing this challenge. Metrics such as the E-factor guide the design of environmentally friendly strategies for chemical processes by quantifying the waste generated in obtaining target products, thus enabling interventions to minimize it. Phthalocyanines (Pcs), versatile molecules with exceptional physical and chemical properties, hold immense potential for technological applications. This review aims to bridge the gap between green chemistry and phthalocyanine synthesis by collecting the main examples of environmentally sustainable syntheses documented in the literature. The calculation of the E-factor of a selection of them provides insights on how crucial it is to evaluate a synthetic process in its entirety. This approach allows for a better evaluation of the actual sustainability of the phthalocyanine synthetic process and indicates possible strategies to improve it.

Electrochemical energy storage in an organic supercapacitor via a non-electrochemical proton charge assembly

Contrary to conventional beliefs, we show how a functional ligand that does not exhibit any redox activity elevates the charge storage capability of an electric double layer via a proton charge assembly. Compared to an unsubstituted ligand, a non-redox active carboxy ligand demonstrated nearly a 4-fold increase in charge storage, impressive capacitive retention even at a rate of 900C, and approximately a 2-fold decrease in leakage currents with an enhancement in energy density up to approximately 70% via a non-electrochemical route of proton charge assembly. Generalizability of these findings is presented with various non-redox active functional units that can undergo proton charge assembly in the ligand. This demonstration of non-redox active functional units enriching supercapacitive charge storage via proton charge assembly contributes to the rational design of ligands for energy storage applications.

Cellulose Fabrics Functionalized with Sol-Gel Photocatalytic Coatings Based on Iron (III) Phthalocyanine Tetracarboxylic Acids-TiO2-Silica Hybrids

Photocatalytic coatings are difficult to obtain on textile materials because of the sometimes contradictory properties that must be achieved. In order to obtain a high efficiency of a photocatalytic effect, the metal-oxide semiconductor must be found in the vicinity of the coating-air interface in order to come into direct contact with the contaminant species and allow light radiation access to its surface. Another necessary condition is related to the properties of the covering textile material as well as to the stability of the xerogel films to light and wet treatments. In this sense, we proposed a solution based on hybrid silica films generated by sol-gel processes, coatings that contain as a photocatalyst TiO2 sensitized with tetracarboxylic acid of iron (III) phthalocyanine (FeTCPc). The coatings were made by the pad-dry-cure process, using in the composition a bifunctional anchoring agent (3-glycidoxipropyltrimethoxysilane, GLYMO), a crosslinking agent (sodium tetraborate, BORAX), and a catalyst (N-methylimidazole, MIM) for the polymerization of epoxy groups. The photodegradation experiments performed on methylene blue (MB), utilized as a model contaminant, using LED or xenon arc as light sources, showed that the treatment with BORAX improves the resistance of the coatings to wet treatments but worsens their photocatalytic performances.

Unraveling the Electronic Structure and Dynamics of the Atomically Dispersed Iron Sites in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Single-atom catalysts with a well-defined metal center open unique opportunities for exploring the catalytically active site and reaction mechanism of chemical reactions. However, understanding of the electronic and structural dynamics of single-atom catalytic centers under reaction conditions is still limited due to the challenge of combining operando techniques that are sensitive to such sites and model single-atom systems. Herein, supported by state-of-the-art operando techniques, we provide an in-depth study of the dynamic structural and electronic evolution during the electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) of a model catalyst comprising iron only as a high-spin (HS) Fe(III)N₄ center in its resting state. Operando ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopies clearly evidence the change from a HS Fe(III)N₄ to a HS Fe(II)N₄ center with decreasing potential, CO₂- or Ar-saturation of the electrolyte, leading to different adsorbates and stability of the HS Fe(II)N₄ center. With operando Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, we identify that the phthalocyanine (Pc) ligand coordinating the iron cation center undergoes a redox process from Fe(II)Pc to Fe(II)Pc^-. Altogether, the HS Fe(II)Pc^- species is identified as the catalytic intermediate for CO₂RR. Furthermore, theoretical calculations reveal that the electroreduction of the Pc ligand modifies the d-band center of the in situ generated HS Fe(II)Pc^- species, resulting in an optimal binding strength to CO₂ and thus boosting the catalytic performance of CO₂RR. This work provides both experimental and theoretical evidence toward the electronic structural and dynamics of reactive sites in single-Fe-atom materials and shall guide the design of novel efficient catalysts for CO₂RR.

Unusual Ligand Assistance in Molecular Electrocatalysis via Interfacial Proton Charge Assembly

We show that the ability of the ligand to reorganize the electric double layer (EDL) often dominates the electrocatalysis contrary to their inductive effect in the spectrochemical series, leading to counterintuitive electrocatalysis. With water oxidation and chlorine evolution as the probe reactions, the same catalytic entity with carboxy functionalized ligand exhibited surprisingly higher electrochemical activity in comparison to the aggressively electron-withdrawing nitro functionalized ligands, which is contrary to their actual location in the spectrochemical series. Spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses suggest the enrichment of catalytically active species in the carboxy substituted ligand via proton charge assembly in the EDL that in turn enhances the kinetics of the overall electrochemical process. This demonstration of less obvious ligands becoming indispensable in electrocatalysis suggests a blind designing of ligands solely based on their inductive effect should be reconsidered as it will prevent the utilization of the maximum potential of the molecule in electrocatalysis.

Cobalt-Tetraamide-Phthalocyanine Immobilized on Fe3O4/Chitosan Microspheres as an Efficient Catalyst for Baeyer-Villiger Oxidation

Cobalt-Tetraamide-Phthalocyanine (CoTaPc) immobilized onto magnetic Fe₃O₄ chitosan microspheres (Fe₃O₄/CTO) was synthesized via a simple immersion method, which is an efficient catalyst for the oxidation of cyclic ketones to lactones with O₂/benzaldehyde as the oxidant. The CoTaPc-Fe₃O₄/CTO catalyst was applied for the first time in the Baeyer-Villiger (B-V) oxidation reaction. Characterization results obtained from X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy showed that the combination of CoTaPc and magnetic Fe₃O₄/CTO microspheres was achieved. The catalyst could be easily separated from the reaction system with an external magnet and reused several times without the remarkable loss of activity. In addition, a possible radical mechanism for the B-V oxidation in this catalytic system is proposed and verified by controlled experiments.

Synthesis and characterization of tetra-ganciclovir cobalt (II) phthalocyanine for electroanalytical applications of AA/DA/UA

Cobalt (II) phthalocyanine embedded with ganciclovir units has been synthesized by a novel method using tetracarboxylic phthalocyanine reported for the first time. The synthesized dark green colored complexes were characterized by electronic spectroscopy, elemental analysis, FT-IR, MASS and XRD. Thermal stability study reveals that the newly synthesized complex was stable up to 300 °C and XRD patterns showed amorphous nature of the complex. In the present work, the synthesized complex was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and shows the redox behavior corresponding to central metal (Co+II/Co+I) of the complex. Three biomolecules are well-separated by their oxidation peaks in simultaneous determination predicting the potentials for (-128, 335, and 723 mV) with highly increasing current. The low detection limit of AA, DA, and UA were 0.33, 0.03 and 0.10 μmol by CV method and good responses of amperometric and DPV technique. The modified tetra substituted CoTGPc/GCE exhibit an excellent electrocatalytic activity, stability, high sensitivity, good linearity, and selectivity without losing its catalytic activity and proves to be a versatile chemical sensor for commercial pharmaceutical samples, vitamin C tablets, and dopamine injections.

Copper based coordination polymers based on metalloligands: utilization as heterogeneous oxidation catalysts

This work presents two copper-based coordination polymers and their utilization as stable, reusable and heterogeneous catalysts for the epoxidation of olefins using O₂ and for peroxide-mediated oxidation of benzyl alcohols under solvent-free conditions.
