CuII(Sal-Ala)/CuAlLDH Hybrid as Novel Efficient Catalyst for Artificial Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Cyclohexene Oxidation by H2O2

Anchoring of Copper(II)-Schiff Base Complex in SBA-15 Matrix as Efficient Oxidation and Biomimetic Catalyst

A new mononuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu(L2)(H2O)2], where L is the Schiff base 2-[2-(3-bromopropoxy)benzylideneamino] benzoic acid, was synthesized and covalently anchored onto an amino-functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous silica in order to obtain an efficient heterogeneous catalyst. The elemental, structural, textural and morphological characterization confirmed the coordination of the central Cu(II) ion with two ligands and two H2O molecules in the synthesized complex and its successful immobilization into the inner pore surface of the NH2-functionalized support without the loss of the mesoporous structure. The catalytic activity of the free or immobilized Cu(II) complex was tested in the oxidation of cyclohexene with H2O2 under an air atmosphere and the dismutation reaction of the superoxide radical anions with very good results. In addition, catalyst reuse tests claim its suitability in alkene oxidation processes or as a biomimetic catalyst.

Engineering g-C3N4 with CuAl-layered double hydroxide in 2D/2D heterostructures for visible-light water splitting

CuAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) and polymeric carbon nitride (g-C3N4, GCNN) were assembled to construct a set of novel 2D/2D CuAl-LDH/GCNN heterostructures. These materials were tested towards H2 and O2 generation from water splitting using visible-light irradiation. Compared to pristine materials, the heterostructures displayed strongly enhanced visible-light H2 evolution, dependent on the LDH content, which acts as a cocatalyst, replacing the benchmark Pt. The optimal LDH loading was achieved for 0.2CuAl-LDH/GCNN that exhibited an increased number of active sites and showed a trade-off between charge separation efficiency and light shading, resulting in a 32-fold increase in the amount of evolved H2 compared with GCNN. In addition, the 0.2CuAl-LDH/GCNN heterostructure generated 1.5 times more O2 than GCNN. The higher photocatalytic performance was due to efficient charge carriers' separation at the heterojunction interface via an S-scheme (corroborated by work function, steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence studies), enhanced utilisation of longer-wavelength photons (>460 nm) and higher surface area available for the catalytic reactions.

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks-based ratiometric fluorescence sensor for the quantitative detection of thiram in fruits samples

The identification of residual thiram (Tr) in foods is vital in view of its harmful effects on human health. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor (I₄₃₅/I₅₉₀) based on rhodamine B/NH₂-MIL-53(Al_0.75Fe_0.25) was constructed for the detection of Tr. Interestingly, the probe RhB/NH₂-MIL-53(Bim) assisted by Cu²⁺ could rapidly and sensitively recognize Tr with a low detection limit of 0.11 μg/mL in 10 min. The fluorescence sensing mechanism was investigated using fluorescence spectra, UV-Vis absorption spectra, the fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield. The results showed that the excellent sensing performance was attributed to fluorescence resonance energy transfer, electrostatic interaction, and photoinduced electron transfer. In addition, the practical application of this platform showed acceptable relative recoveries for Tr (84.03-107.81 %), and precisions were also achieved (relative standard deviation ≤ 8.69 %, n = 3). These results show that the presented herein can be applied to monitor the Tr content in real fruit samples.

An ultralow concentration of Al-MOFs for turn-on fluorescence detection of aflatoxin B1 in tea samples

A turn-on fluorescent sensing platform based on an ultralow concentration of Al-metal organic frameworks for the detection of aflatoxin B₁ has been developed for the first time. This fluorescence turn-on sensor exhibits the largest fluorescence enhancement (or quenching) constant value of 179404 M^-1 among all luminescence-based chemical sensors reported till date. Moreover, the sensor afforded a rapid detection of aflatoxin B₁, with a linear response in the concentration range of 0.05-9.61 μM and a low detection limit of 11.67 ppb. Additionally, the fabricated sensor showed good repeatability, reproducibility, stability, and selectivity. Most importantly, the practical application of this sensor has been demonstrated by detecting aflatoxin B₁ in complex tea samples with low relative standard deviation (≤7.72%; n = 3) and satisfactory recoveries. In summary, the proposed method has great potential as a simple, sensitive and selective strategy for monitoring aflatoxin B₁ in food samples.

Poly(β-hydroxyl amine)s: Valuable Building Blocks for Supramolecular Elastomers with Tunable Mechanical Performance and Superior Healing Capacity

Supramolecular elastomers integrated with high mechanical toughness and excellent self-healing ability offer attractive applications in various fields such as biomedical materials and wearable electronics. However, the multistep preparation process for creating functional polymer precursors and the expensive stock materials required are two factors that limit the widespread use of supramolecular elastomers. Herein, for the first time, poly(β-hydroxyl amine)s generated by amine-epoxy polymerization were used in the development of supramolecular polymer materials. Based on the novel silicon-containing poly(β-hydroxyl amine)s synthesized by the polymerization between 1,3-bis(3-glycidyloxypropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane and 3-amino-1,2-propanediol, dually cross-linked supramolecular elastomers with both hydrogen bonding and metal coordination were achieved, displaying adjustable mechanical properties with the tensile strength varying from 0.70 MPa to 2.52 MPa, respectively. Thanks to the dynamic nature of the supramolecular interactions, these elastomers exhibited favorable hot-pressing reprocessability and excellent self-healing performance, with the healing efficiency reaching up to 98% at 60 °C for 48 h. Potential applications for photoluminescent materials and flexible electronic devices were demonstrated. We believe that its simplicity of synthesis, adjustable mechanical properties, and robust self-healing capacities bode well for future applications of this new supramolecular elastomer.

Highly stable enzyme-mimicking nanocomposite of antioxidant activity

A highly stable nanocomposite of antioxidant activity was developed by immobilization of a superoxide dismutase-mimicking metal complex on copolymer-functionalized nanoclay. The layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoclays were synthesized and surface modification was performed by adsorbing poly(vinylpyridine-b-methacrylic acid) (PVPMAA). The effect of the adsorption on the charging and aggregation properties was investigated and the copolymer dose was optimized to obtain stable LDH dispersions. The LDH-PVPMAA hybrid particles showed high resistance against salt-induced destabilization in aqueous dispersions. Copper(II)-histamine (Cu(Hsm)₂) complexes were immobilized via the formation of dative bonds between the metal ions and the nitrogen atoms of the functional groups of the copolymer adsorbed on the particles. Changes in the coordination geometry of the complex upon immobilization led to higher superoxide radical anion scavenging activity than the one determined for the non-immobilized complex. Comparison of superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of the obtained hybrid LDH-PVPMAA-Cu(Hsm)₂ with the nanoclay-immobilized SOD enzyme revealed that the developed composite maintained its activity over several days and was able to function at elevated temperature, while the immobilized native enzyme lost its activity under these experimental conditions. The developed nanocomposite is a promising antioxidant candidate in applications, where high electrolyte concentration and elevated temperature are applied.
