Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5-Dihydroxymethylfuran over Co/UiO-66-NH2

Recent advances in catalytic synthesis of 2,5-furandimethanol from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and carbohydrates

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile platform chemical derived from the dehydration of renewable carbohydrates (typically glucose/fructose-based monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides). Some useful compounds, such as 2,5-furandimethanol (FDM), 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF), have been synthesized by reduction of HMF. Among these, FDM is a promising diol and can be further converted towards fine chemicals, liquid fuels and polymer materials. In this review, some typical catalytic systems for the synthesis of FDM from both HMF and carbohydrates were summarized. The discussion focused on controlling the reaction networks for the reduction of HMF. The reaction mechanisms and the stability of the catalysts were introduced briefly. Last but not least, the prospects of effective production of FDM were discussed as well.

A Review on the Critical Role of H2 Donor in the Selective Hydrogenation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

The selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been of great interest to many scientists and researchers. However, conventional hydrogenation inevitably requires the use of gaseous hydrogen as a reducing agent, which is detrimental to its storage and transport. In this regard, other economical and environmentally friendly strategies, such as catalytic transfer hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis without external molecular H₂ , become more and more attractive. This Review provides the status and insight into the current research of hydrogenating HMF to high-value chemicals, using formic acid, alcohols, polymethylhydrosiloxane, water, and sodium borohydride as hydrogen donors and explains the hydrogenation mechanisms and the related hydrogenation characteristics of different hydrogen donors in the catalytic systems.

Selective Hydrogenation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Dimethylfuran Over Popcorn-Like Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Confined CuCo Bimetallic Catalyst

A new type of biomass-based liquid fuel, 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), has attracted significant attention owing to its unique physical properties and carbon neutrality. It can be obtained from the hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), an important biomass platform compound. In this study, we developed a nitrogen-doped carbon-confined CuCo bimetallic catalyst with a popcorn-like structure for the selective hydrogenation of HMF with high efficiency and adequate stability. Under optimized conditions, 100% HMF conversion and 93.7% DMF selectivity were achieved. The structure of the catalyst was characterized using XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM. It was observed that carbon spheres, which were covered by nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes, uniformly formed, while metal particles were confined in the nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes. The popcorn-like structure exhibited a larger surface area and provided more contact sites, while the confined metal particles were the main active sites. The synergistic effect between Cu and Co was beneficial for DMF selectivity.
