Ice-Templated Geopolymer—Fe/Mn Oxide Composites Conceived as Oxygen Carriers

Ice-templating (freeze-casting) technique was applied to a novel class of geopolymer composites containing Fe/Mn oxides, previously tested and reported in others works as synthetic oxygen carriers for chemical looping combustion (CLC), in order to obtain composite monoliths with lamellar macro-porosities by unidirectional freezing of water-based sol-gel systems. Geopolymer-Fe/Mn oxides composites carriers were also produced as beads, suitable for fixed bed reactors, by an injection-solidification method in liquid nitrogen. After conditioning at 900 °C, the temperature needed for CLC applications, the composite beads and monoliths possess similar total porosity % and total pore volume, being ≈65% and 570 mm3 g−1, respectively, as well as a specific surface area of around 2.4–2.9 m2/g.

Interfacial phenomena at a surface of individual and complex fumed nanooxides

Investigations of interfacial and temperature behaviors of nonpolar and polar adsorbates interacting with individual and complex fumed metal or metalloid oxides (FMO), initial and subjected to various treatments or chemical functionalization and compared to such porous adsorbents as silica gels, precipitated silica, mesoporous ordered silicas, filled polymeric composites, were analyzed. Complex nanooxides include core-shell nanoparticles, CSNP (50-200nm in size) with titania or alumina cores and silica or alumina shells in contrast to simple and smaller nanoparticles of individual FMO. CSNP could be destroyed under high-pressure cryogelation (HPCG) or mechanochemical activation (MCA). These treatments affect the structure of aggregates of nanoparticles and agglomerates of aggregates, resulting in their becoming more compacted. The analysis shows that complex FMO could be more sensitive to external actions than simple nanooxides such as fumed silica. Any treatment of 'soft' FMO affects the interfacial and temperature behaviors of polar and nonpolar adsorbates. Rearrangement of secondary particles and surface functionalization affects the freezing-melting point depression of adsorbates. For some adsorbates, open hysteresis loops became readily apparent in adsorption-desorption isotherms. Clustering of adsorbates bound in textural pores in aggregates of nanoparticles (i.e., voids between nanoparticles in secondary structures) causes reduced changes in enthalpy during phase transitions (freezing, fusion, evaporation). Freezing point depression and melting point elevation cause significant hysteresis freezing-melting effects for adsorbates bound to FMO in the textural pores. Relaxation phenomena for both low- and high-molecular weight adsorbates or filled polymeric composites are affected by the morphology of primary particles, structural organization of secondary particles of differently treated or functionalized FMO, content of adsorbates, co-adsorption order, and temperature.

Solution-based fabrication of VO2 (M) nanoparticles via lyophilisation

Freeze drying was employed to produce highly pure and crystalline thermochromic VO₂ nanoparticles. By changing the precursor concentration and annealing temperature, particle size and crystallinity can be controlled.

Nanoporous thermochromic VO₂ (M) thin films: controlled porosity, largely enhanced luminous transmittance and solar modulating ability

Vanadium dioxide is the most widely researched thermochromic material with a phase transition temperature (τ(c)) of around 68 °C, and its thermochromic performance can be enhanced by adding nanoporosity. Freeze-drying has been employed to fabricate nanostructures with different porosities from 16 to 45% by varying the prefreezing temperature and precursor concentration. The luminous transmittance (Tlum) and solar modulating ability (ΔTsol) are greatly enhanced as a result of increasing pore size and pore density. The freeze-dried sample with 7.5 mL of H2O2 precursor dip-coated at 300 mm/min gives the best combination of thermochromic properties (Tlum ≈ 50%, ΔTsol = 14.7%), which surpasses the best combined thermochromic performance reported to date that we are aware of (Tlum ≈ 41%, ΔTsol = 14.1%).

Method for production of polymer and carbon nanofibers from water-soluble polymers

Nanometer scale carbon fibers (carbon nanofibers) are of great interest to scientists and engineers in fields such as materials science, composite production, and energy storage due to their unique chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. Precursors currently used for production of carbon nanofibers are primarily from nonrenewable resources. Lignin is a renewable natural polymer existing in all high-level plants that is a byproduct of the papermaking process and a potential feedstock for carbon nanofiber production. The work presented here demonstrates a process involving the rapid freezing of an aqueous lignin solution, followed by sublimation of the resultant ice, to form a uniform network comprised of individual interconnected lignin nanofibers. Carbonization of the lignin nanofibers yields a similarly structured carbon nanofiber network. The methodology is not specific to lignin; nanofibers of other water-soluble polymers have been successfully produced. This nanoscale fibrous morphology has not been observed in traditional cryogel processes, due to the relatively slower freezing rates employed compared to those achieved in this study.
