Cobalt-Based Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting: An Overview

CoFeBP Micro Flowers (MFs) for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts

Hydrogen is one of the most promising green energy alternatives due to its high gravimetric energy density, zero-carbon emissions, and other advantages. In this work, a CoFeBP micro-flower (MF) electrocatalyst is fabricated as an advanced water-splitting electrocatalyst by a hydrothermal approach for hydrogen production with the highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The fabrication process of the CoFeBP MF electrocatalyst is systematically optimized by thorough investigations on various hydrothermal synthesis and post-annealing parameters. The best optimized CoFeBP MF electrode demonstrates HER/OER overpotentials of 20 mV and 219 mV at 20 mA/cm2. The CoFeBP MFs also exhibit a low 2-electrode (2-E) cell voltage of 1.60 V at 50 mA/cm2, which is comparable to the benchmark electrodes of Pt/C and RuO2. The CoFeBP MFs demonstrate excellent 2-E stability of over 100 h operation under harsh industrial operational conditions at 60 °C in 6 M KOH at a high current density of 1000 mA/cm2. The flower-like morphology can offer a largely increased electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), and systematic post-annealing can lead to improved crystallinity in CoFeBP MFs.

Reducibility of Al3+-Modified Co3O4: Influence of Aluminum Distribution

The reduction of Co-based oxides doped with Al3+ ions has been studied using in situ XRD and TPR techniques. Al3+-modified Co3O4 oxides with the Al mole fraction Al/(Co + Al) = 1/6; 1/7.5 were prepared via coprecipitation, with further calcination at 500 and 850 °C. Using XRD and HAADF-STEM combined with EDS element mapping, the Al3+ cations were dissolved in the Co3O4 lattice; however, the cation distribution differed and depended on the calcination temperature. Heating at 500 °C led to the formation of an inhomogeneous (Co,Al)3O4 solid solution; further treatment at 850 °C provoked the partial decomposition of mixed Co-Al oxides and the formation of particles with an Al-depleted interior and Al-enriched surface. It has been shown that the reduction of cobalt oxide by hydrogen occurs via the following transformations: (Co,Al)3O4 → (Co,Al)O → Co. Depending on the Al distribution, the course of reduction changes. In the case of the inhomogeneous (Co,Al)3O4 solid solution, Al stabilizes intermediate Co(II)-Al(III) oxides during reduction. When Al3+ ions are predominantly on the surface of the Co3O4 particles, the intermediate compound consists of Al-depleted and Al-enriched Co(II)-Al(III) oxides, which are reduced independently. Different distributions of elemental Co and Al in mixed oxides simulate different types of the interaction phase in Co3O4/γ-Al2O3-supported catalysts. These changes in the reduction properties can significantly affect the state of an active component of the Co-based catalysts.

Microwave-Assisted Auto-Combustion Synthesis of Binary/Ternary Co x Ni1-x Ferrite for Electrochemical Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution

Enormous efforts have been dedicated to engineering low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER, respectively). For this, the current contribution reports the successful synthesis of binary/ternary metal ferrites (Co x Ni1-x Ferrite; x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0) by a simple one-step microwave technique and subsequently discusses its chemical and electrochemical properties. The X-ray diffraction analysis substantiated the phase purity of the as-obtained catalysts with various compositions. Additionally, the morphology of the nanoparticles was identified via transmission electron microscopy. Further, the vibrating sample magnetometer justified the ferromagnetic character of the as-prepared products. The electrochemical measurements revealed that the as-prepared materials required the overpotentials of 422-600 and 419-467 mV for HER and OER, respectively, to afford current densities of 10 mA cm-2. In the general sense, Ni cation substitution with Co influenced favorably toward both HER and OER. Among all synthesized electrocatalysts, Co0.9Ni0.1Ferrite displayed the highest performance in terms of OER in 1 M KOH solution, which is related to the synergistic effect of multiple parameters including the optimal substitution amount of Co, the highest Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, the smallest particle size among all samples (26.71 nm), and the lowest charge transfer resistance. The successful synthesis of ternary ferrites carried out for the first time via a microwave-assisted auto-combustion route opens up a new path for their applications in renewable energy technologies.
