Abstract
The possibility of functionalization of dipyrido[3,2-e:2',3'-h]acenaphthene containing a quino[7,8-h]quinoline fragment and being a highly basic diazine analog of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene ("proton sponge") has been studied for the first time. In addition to the pronounced tendency of the title compound to form associates with an intramolecular hydrogen bond of the NHN type (new examples with the participation of pyridine rings, including self-associates are shown) and its inertness to amination reactions of the pyridine rings, the naphthalene core at positions 5(8) and the CH2CH2 bridge (dehydrogenation) undergo chemical modifications under mild conditions, giving the corresponding acenaphthylenes. The latter can also be obtained in an unusual way by tele-elimination from 5,8-dibromodipyridoacenaphthene by reaction with neutral or anionic bases.

Abstract
A series of previously unknown 2,4,5-tri- and 2,4,5,7-tetrasubstituted 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalenes and their salts with HBF4 containing bulky spherically shaped substituents (Me, Br, and SiMe3) in the naphthalene ring has been synthesized. Using XRD analysis of 11 samples, the influence of the so-called "buttressing" and "clothespin" effects on their molecular structure and the NHN hydrogen bond geometry in the solid cations were investigated. The combined action of both effects has been shown to significantly increase the compression of the hydrogen bond. As a result, the previous record of the hydrogen bond shortness (N···N = 2.524 Å) has been surpassed in favor of 2.502 Å found for the tetrafluoroborate of 2,4,5,7-tetramethyl-1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene. The molecular structure of the latter differs by perfect symmetry and practically barrier-free proton transfer in the [NHN]+ bond. On the basis of the results of quantum-chemical calculations, it is suggested that the value of 2.502 Å likely represents or lies very close to the theoretical limit for the short hydrogen bonds between the amine-type nitrogen atoms.

Abstract
Quinolino[7,8-h]quinoline is a superbasic compound, with a pKaH in acetonitrile greater than that of 1,8-bis(dimethylaminonaphthalene) (DMAN), although its synthesis and the synthesis of its derivatives can be problematic. The use of halogen derivatives 4,9-dichloroquinolino[7,8-h]quinoline (16) and 4,9-dibromoquinolino[7,8-h]quinoline (17) as precursors has granted the formation of a range of substituted quinolinoquinolines. The basicity and other properties of quinolinoquinolines can be modified by the inclusion of suitable functionalities. The experimentally obtained pKaH values of quinolino[7,8-h]quinoline derivatives show that N4,N4,N9,N9-tetraethylquinolino[7,8-h]quinoline-4,9-diamine (26) is more superbasic than quinolino[7,8-h]quinoline. Computationally derived pKaH values of quinolinoquinolines functionalized with dimethylamino (NMe2), 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidino (N═C(NMe2)2) or N,N,N',N',N″,N″-hexamethylphosphorimidic triamido (N═P(NMe2)3) groups are significantly greater than those of quinolino[7,8-h]quinoline. Overall, electron-donating functionalities are observed to increase the basicity of the quinolinoquinoline moiety, while the substitution of electron-withdrawing groups lowers the basicity.

Abstract
The synthesis, as well as spectral, structural and photoluminescence properties of dipyrido[3,2-e:2',3'-h]acenaphthene 5 and quinazolino[7,8-h]quinazolines 6 as representatives of the bidentate -N[double bond, length as m-dash]/-N[double bond, length as m-dash] superbases, are reported. These nitrogen bases being more rigid (5) or π-extended (6) analogs of optically-mute quino[7,8-h]quinoline are both active in terms of fluorescence with quantum yields up to φ = 0.71-0.77. At the same time, their luminescence behavior is opposite to that of peri-NMe2/NMe2 naphthalene proton sponges and their hybrid NMe2/-N[double bond, length as m-dash] analogs. Although 5 and 6 exhibit visible region emission upon protonation, for the hybrid systems the fluorescence is manifested only for bases. The most remarkable observation is that the fluorescence of compound 5 can be switched on not only by means of organic or inorganic acids, but also through the formation of chelate complexes with such weak H-donors as water and primary alcohols. It was disclosed that water is present in the complex as a cluster comprising 8 interconnected H2O molecules. Overall, the studied compounds demonstrate a previously unobserved type of dual mode optical response, H-sensing (emission enhancement in 5 and 6 on protonation) and π-sensing (emission quenching in 5H+ and 6H+ on coordination with π-donors). This work seems to be an important contribution to areas such as chemosensorics, the creation of new ligands, hydrogen transfer and some other phenomena representing different types of supramolecular interactions.

Abstract
Nitrogen bases containing one or more pushing amino-group(s) directly linked to a pulling cyano, imino, or phosphoimino group, as well as those in which the pushing and pulling moieties are separated by a conjugated spacer (C═X)n, where X is CH or N, display an exceptionally strong basicity. The n-π conjugation between the pushing and pulling groups in such systems lowers the basicity of the pushing amino-group(s) and increases the basicity of the pulling cyano, imino, or phosphoimino group. In the gas phase, most of the so-called push-pull nitrogen bases exhibit a very high basicity. This paper presents an analysis of the exceptional gas-phase basicity, mostly in terms of experimental data, in relation with structure and conjugation of various subfamilies of push-pull nitrogen bases: nitriles, azoles, azines, amidines, guanidines, vinamidines, biguanides, and phosphazenes. The strong basicity of biomolecules containing a push-pull nitrogen substructure, such as bioamines, amino acids, and peptides containing push-pull side chains, nucleobases, and their nucleosides and nucleotides, is also analyzed. Progress and perspectives of experimental determinations of GBs and PAs of highly basic compounds, termed as "superbases", are presented and benchmarked on the basis of theoretical calculations on existing or hypothetical molecules.

Abstract
Spectrophotometric method is used to study the acid-base and coordination properties of a series of porphyrins with a continuously increasing degree of macrocycle deformation resulting from the introduction of strong electron — withdrawing substituents: 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin (1), 5-nitro-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin (2), 5,15-dinitro-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin (3), 5,10,15-trinitro-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin (4), and 5,10,15,20-tetranitro-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin (5). It is found that the values of total basicity constants obtained for the investigated compounds consistently diminish with an increase in the number of meso-substituents: 11.85 (1) < 10.45 (2) < 10.31 (3) < 10.23 (4) < 9.56 (5). The values of the combined acidity constants of porphyrins (4–5) obtained in acetonitrile-DBU system at 298 K are pKa = 10.90 and 10.40 respectively. The reaction of complex formation between the porphyrins and their dianionic forms with zinc acetate was studied. It is shown that two opposing factors, the steric and electronic effects of the substituents, change the acid-base and coordination properties of the above series of compounds.
