Teachers' beliefs and practices of technology integration at a school for students with dyslexia: A mixed methods study

Understanding factors affecting fundamental school teachers' use of technology in Luxembourg through a survey study

Over the last few decades, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have brought about significant disruptions across nearly every industry, including education. Acknowledging the power of the digital revolution to make a positive change, educational policy makers in Luxembourg have made efforts to translate these trends into policies leveraging the potential of technologies while also tackling the challenges they present. However, these efforts and their impact on teacher ICT integration behaviors in Luxembourg are rather underexplored. The aim of the study was to examine and understand factors associated with efficient educational technology practices. The study data were collected through an online survey of 159 teachers and analyzed through a mixed-method approach, including regression and correlation analyses. Findings shed light on the connections between professional use of ICT and a set of interrelated factors such as (a) teacher attitudes followed by (b) subjective norms, (c) teacher self-efficacy beliefs, (d) facilitating conditions, (e) teacher value beliefs, and (f) fundamental pedagogical beliefs. The study also revealed possible deterrents and challenges of ICT integration in Luxembourgish fundamental schools, including gaps between teacher ICT competencies and advanced ICT uses, class management issues, and developed suggestions for professional development training to ensure efficient and advanced ICT uses in the classroom.

Factors That Support Technology Integration Practices in the Math Education of Children with Intellectual Disabilities

The current paper explores the relationship between technological knowledge, beliefs about technology use in education, beliefs about the limits of technology use with respect to children with disabilities, self-efficacy beliefs, and their effects on technology use or teacher practices in the special education setting regarding mathematics education. Research was conducted via an online questionnaire. A total of 83 teachers working in the field of special education answered the questionnaire. The answers were analyzed via quantitative and qualitative analyses. In addition, correlational analyses were conducted. A prediction model that included all the aforementioned variables was tested. Our regression analysis evidenced the strong predictive value of technology-related knowledge with respect to technology integration practices but not toward the other models that included beliefs. Through mediation analysis, we found that technology-related knowledge mediates the relationship between self-efficacy and technology integration practices. The qualitative findings provided information on the interplay between knowledge, practice, and beliefs that are contextualized; on the specificity of technology-related knowledge. Implications are discussed with reference to factors important for the professional development of teachers with regard to technology integration.

Online Instructor Clusters: Implementation Frequency of Instructional Activities

The purpose of this study was to group instructors based on their patterns of implementing activities in their online courses, to examine factors that influenced differences within clusters, and to explore whether cluster membership affected instructor satisfaction. Data were collected from faculty at a university in the western United States with the use of three instruments that measure pedagogical beliefs, implementation of instructional activities, and instructor satisfaction. Latent class analysis method was used to identify instructor groups and examine how the groups differed in pedagogical beliefs, characteristics, and satisfaction. The resulting two-cluster solution includes two orientations: content and learner-centric. Of the covariates examined, constructivist pedagogical beliefs and gender were the significant predictors of cluster membership. Results also showed a significant difference between the predicted clusters pertaining to online instructor satisfaction.

A diagnostic classification model of college instructors' value beliefs towards open educational resources

Open educational resources (OER) can be cost-effective alternatives to traditional textbooks for higher education faculty to decrease student spending on textbooks. To further advocate college instructors' use of OER, understanding their value belief towards integrating OER in teaching is necessary but currently absent. This study thus analyzed 513 college instructors' value beliefs about using OER in college teaching by applying a psychometric model known as diagnostic classification models (DCMs). The findings of this study validated the three constructs in value beliefs measured by an OER user survey: engaging students, customizing classroom materials and supporting personal professional development. The results showed that a considerable number of college instructors maintained a low level of value beliefs towards using OER. We further provided individualized classification for each college instructor in terms of the three types of value beliefs. In addition, this study investigated how pre-determined latent classes of value beliefs influenced college instructors' practice and perception of using OER. Particularly, college instructors who value OER to address their profession needs are more likely to adapt OER in their teaching rather than merely reusing existing copies. Practical implications of supporting higher education faculty's use of OER are discussed in the end.

Teachers' value beliefs and usage of one-to-one devices for students with dyslexia: A descriptive study

One-to-one devices provide the opportunity for students to develop 21st-century skills, improve academic learning, access information, and increase student independence. This descriptive study explored the value beliefs held by middle school teachers at a school for students with dyslexia (SWD) following the implementation of one-to-one devices and the teachers' technology integration during the instruction of SWD. Data were collected from nine middle school teachers through a survey, classroom observation, and structured interviews. Quantitative findings demonstrated that teachers valued the use of technology in the teaching and learning process and had access to resources and personnel to support technology integration. However, the mean score for the sufficient training for technology integration was found to be lower. The study's qualitative findings revealed (a) one-to-one devices were used as a supplemental resource; (b) technology had both positive and negative impacts, and (c) teachers increased in self-efficacy of technology use within a supportive environment. Based on these findings, extended professional development incorporating 21st-century skills with a focus on the integration of devices into content areas is needed in order to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to incorporate student-centered activities.
