Rising gamification in health education: A bibliometric study

BACKGROUND

The rising gamification in educational contexts has been driven by its potential to increase student motivation, engagement, interest and learning outcomes. Thanks to these effects, gamification has gained popularity in health education. Due to the increase in studies on gamification in health education in recent years, this study has been carried out to present the studies in the relevant literature to researchers.

AIM

This study presents a quantitative mapping of gamification in health education through a bibliometric analysis of its publications.

METHODS

In this study, a total of 475 articles were analyzed by searching "health education*" and "gamif*" and similar terms from Web of Science and Scopus databases. R bibliometric package program was used for the analysis. 1971 authors contributed to the studies, which were spread between 2012 and 2024. The number of studies on gamification in the field of health education has grown in recent years. In particular, it was seen that 2018 can be seen as the breaking point and the highest number of publications was in 2023, with 101 publications.

RESULTS

The descriptive results showed that Zhang, X. was the most productive author, Nurse Education Today and BMC Medical Education were the most productive journals and the United States was the most productive country. It is concluded that terms such as gamification, medical education, game-based learning, education, serious games, simulation and e-learning are the most frequently used words in gamification studies in the field of health education. It has been observed that the concept of gamification is trending, especially in 2018-2023, with a frequency of 150 uses.

CONCLUSIONS

This study is expected to guide researchers in terms of key points for future research on gamification in health education contexts. It is expected that the knowledge provided by this study will enable researchers to be involved in this field and/or focus their research more effectively.

Thematic evolution of smart learning environments, insights and directions from a 20-year research milestones: A bibliometric analysis

Smart learning environments (SLEs) have been developed to create an effective learning environment gradually and sustainably by applying technology. Given the growing dependence on technology daily, SLE will inevitably be incorporated into the teaching and learning process. Without transforming technology-enhanced learning environments into SLE, they are restricted to adding sophistication and lack pedagogical benefits, leading to wasteful educational investments. SLE research has grown over time, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021, which fundamentally altered the "landscape" of technology use in education. This study aims to discover how the stages of SLE transform from time to time by applying two bibliometric analysis approaches: publication performance analysis and science mapping. The dataset was created by extracting bibliometric data from Scopus, including 427 articles, 162 publication sources (journals and proceeding), and 1080 authors from 2002 to 2022. Three kinds of SLE research subjects were identified by keyword synthesis: SLE features, technological innovation, and adaptive learning systems. Adaptive learning and personalized learning are consistently used interchangeably to demonstrate the significance of supporting the diversity of student and teacher conditions. Learning analytics, essential to employing big data technology for educational data mining, is a new theme being considered increasingly in the future to achieve adaptive and personalized learning. The 20-year SLE research milestone, broken down into five stages with various focuses on goals and served as the foundation for creating a maturity model of SLE.

Technology-enhanced higher education: Text mining and bibliometrics

Objectives

Research on technology-enhanced higher education (TEHE) has been active and influential in educational technology. The study had three objectives: (1) to recognize the tendencies in the field and the contributing countries/regions/institutions, (2) to visualize scientific collaborations, and (3) to reveal important research topics, their developmental tendencies, correlations, and distributions across contributing countries/regions/institutions.

Methods

We collected 609 papers in relation to TEHE from 2004 to 2022 and analyzed them using text mining and bibliometric methods. Specifically, we focused on determining article trends, identifying contributing institutions/countries/regions, visualizing scientific collaborations through social network analysis, and revealing the important topics and their conceptual evolutions over time using topic models, Mann-Kendall trend test, hierarchical clustering, and Sankey visualization.

Results

Regarding the first objective, TEHE articles have grown consistently and will continue to expand. This growth was due to the contributions of Spanish universities and institutions from other countries/regions such as the USA, the UK, Australia, Germany, China, and Turkey. Regarding the second objective, the exploration of regional and institutional collaborations through social networks revealed that geographically adjacent institutions tended to foster close collaborations, particularly among those sharing similar research interests. Nevertheless, more cross-regional collaborations are needed to advance TEHE research. Regarding the third objective, the analysis of topics highlighted research hotspots and emerging themes such as Massive Online Open Courses, AI and big data in education, Gamification and engagement, Learning effectiveness and strategies, Social networks and discussion forums, COVID-19 and online learning, and Plagiarism detection and learning analytics.

Conclusions

This bibliometric study comprehensively analyzed the research landscape of TEHE research regarding contributors, collaborations, and research topics, and offers a glimpse into what the future may hold. It can be used as a guide for contributors to the field to identify the current research hotspots and emerging themes.

Cereal-legume intercropping: a smart review using topic modelling

Introduction

Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest in cereal-legume intercropping for sustainable agriculture. As a result numerous papers, including reviews, focus on this topic. Screening this large amount of papers, to identify knowledge gaps and future research opportunities, manually, would be a complex and time consuming task.

Materials and methods

Bibliometric analysis combined with text mining and topic modelling, to automatically find topics and to derive a representation of intercropping papers as a potential solution to reduce the workload was tested. Both common (e.g. wheat and soybean) as well as underutilized crops (e.g. buckwheat, lupin, triticale) were the focus of this study. The corpus used for the analysis was retrieved from Web of Science and Scopus on 5th September 2022 and consisted of 4,732 papers.

Results

The number of papers on cereal-legume intercropping increased in recent years, with most studies being located in China. Literature mainly dealt with the cereals maize and wheat and the legume soybean whereas buckwheat and lupin received little attention from academic researchers. These underutilized crops are certainly interesting to be used as intercropping partners, however, additional research on optimization of management and cultivar's choice is important. Yield and nitrogen fixation are the most commonly studied traits in cereal-legume intercropping. Last decade, there is an increasing interest in climate resilience, sustainability and biodiversity. Also the term "ecosystem services" came into play, but still with a low frequency. The regulating services and provisioning services seem to be the most studied, in contrast terms related to potential cultural services were not encountered.

Discussion

In conclusion, based on this review several research opportunities were identified. Minor crops like lupin and buckwheat need to be evaluated for their role as intercropping partners. The interaction between species based on e.g. root exudates needs to be further unraveled. Also diseases, pests and weeds in relation to intercropping deserve more attention and finally more in-depth research on the additional benefits/ecosystem services associated with intercropping systems is necessary.

Exploring research trends of technology use in mathematics education: A scoping review using topic modeling

This study performed a scoping review of the literature concerning the use of technology in mathematics education published between January 1981 and March 2022 to explore research trends. After the defined filtering process, we retrieved 2,433 articles from Web of Science, ERIC, and PsycInfo databases and employed Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling to extract key terms and topics from the selected articles. The analysis focused on the four aspects: (a) evolution of research trends of technology use in mathematics education, (b) frequently used words, (c) latent research topics, and (d) research trends for particular topics. The findings revealed a steady increase in research interest, and the combination of frequently used words in the article abstracts suggests popular research topics that have been studied during the set period. The results of LDA identified seven research topics that were not precisely aligned with those identified in prior studies on mathematics education or educational technology. This implied technology integration into mathematics education as a distinctive research area. Over time, the seven topics showed different research trends (stable, fluctuating, increasing, and decreasing). We discussed plausible reasons for these varied patterns and proposed implications based on the research findings.

Empirical research of emerging trends and patterns across the flipped classroom studies using topic modeling

This study presents topic modeling based bibliometric characteristics of the articles related to the flipped classroom. The corpus of the study consists of 2959 articles published in the Scopus database as of the end of 2021. In addition to the bibliometric characteristics of the field, research interests and trends were also revealed with the study, which was based on the topic modeling-based bibliometric analysis method. According to the results of the study, an increase in the number of publications has been observed since 2015. Nearly one-third of the studies are of United States origin. According to the findings of the topic analysis in which the research interests and trends in the studies were revealed, the articles in this field were gathered under 16 topics. Considering the number of publications of the topic, it was seen that the three most voluminous topics were "Performance and perception", "Nursing education" and "Effectiveness and motivation", respectively. It is thought that the results of the study will provide a general perspective to the researchers in this field and provide important outputs in the context of monitoring the issues that may become prominent in the future.
