Interleaving Foundational Nursing Concepts for Accelerated Nursing Students Through Gamification

ABSTRACT

As nursing education adapts to post-COVID learning and an ever-increasing data-connected world, interactive gaming experiences may help students retain information and encourage teamwork and critical thinking skills. This article explores the innovative use of an escape room as a means to interleave essential nursing concepts for first-semester students pursuing an accelerated bachelor's degree in nursing. The unique approach proved to be an effective and engaging way to introduce and reinforce key principles.

Twelve tips for providing academic remediation to widening access learners in medical education

As medical schools expand access and diversity through widening access initiatives, there is an increasing need to provide academic remediation for learners during their first year in medical school. The previous educational experiences of widening access learners are often mismatched for continuing success in medical school. This article offers 12 tips for providing academic remediation to widening access learners and draws on insights from the learning sciences and research in psychosocial education to support academic development within a holistic framework.

Reply to Sana et al.’s (2022) Commentary on Rest-from-Deliberate-Learning as a Mechanism for the Spacing Effect

Sana and colleagues (2022) have raised a number of challenges regarding the operationalisation of constructs and selection of articles to Chen et al.’s (Educational Psychology Review 33:1499–1522, 2021) suggestion that resting from cognitive activity could possibly allow for working memory recovery and so explain some of the data on the spacing effect. In our response, we indicate that the goal of our proposed framework was to try to resolve some mixed results of the spacing and interleaving effects and offer an alternative explanation for those mixed results, rather than proposing a theory of everything. We acknowledge that there are other important factors, which does not however, provide grounds for rejecting our hypothesis. Additional empirical studies are needed to determine whether rest and its effect on working memory are important when analysing the spacing effect.

Children's Evolved Learning Abilities and Their Implications for Education

In this article, I examine children's evolved learning mechanisms that make humans the most educable of animals. These include (1) skeletal perceptual and cognitive mechanisms that get fleshed out over the course of development, mainly through play; (2) a high level of plasticity that is greatest early in life but that persists into adulthood; (3) remarkable social-learning capabilities; and (4) dispositions toward exploration and play. I next examine some evolutionary mismatches-conflicts between psychological mechanisms evolved in ancient environments and their utility in modern ones-specifically with respect to modern educational systems. I then suggest some ways educators can take advantage of children's evolved learning abilities to minimize the effects of evolutionary mismatches, including (1) following developmentally appropriate practices (which are also evolutionarily appropriate practices), (2) increasing opportunities for physical activities, (3) increasing opportunities to learn through play, and (4) taking advantage of stress-adapted children's "hidden talents." I argue that evolutionary theory informs teachers and parents about how children evolved to learn and can result in more-enlightened teaching methods that will result in a more enjoyable and successful learning experiences for children.
