The concentration and distribution of organochlorine pesticides in the air from the karst cave, South China

Organochlorine Pesticides in Karst Soil: Levels, Distribution, and Source Diagnosis

Excessive reclamation and improper use of agrochemicals in karst areas leads to serious non-point source pollution, which is of great concern and needs to be controlled, since contaminants can easily pollute groundwater due to the thin patchy soil and developed karst structures. The occurrences of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in karst soil were investigated by analyzing 25 OCPs in the karst soils near the Three Gorges Dam, China. The total concentrations of OCPs ranged 161–43,100 (6410 ± 9620) pg/g, with the most abundant compounds being p,p′-DDT and mirex. The concentration differences between the orchard and vegetable field and between upstream and downstream presented the influences of land-use type and water transport on the OCP spatial distributions. Composition analysis indicated the possible fresh inputs of lindane, technical DDT, aldrin, endrin, mirex, and methoxychlor. Their illegal uses implied an insufficient agrochemical management system in undeveloped karst areas. Principal component analysis with multiple linear regression analysis characterized the dominant sources from current agricultural use and current veterinary use in the study area. OCPs in the soils might not pose significant cancer risk for the residents, but they need to be controlled due to their illegal uses and bioaccumulation effect via the food chain.

Pesticides in the typical agricultural groundwater in Songnen plain, northeast China: occurrence, spatial distribution and health risks

Songnen plain is an important commodity grain base of China, and this is the first study on the comprehensive detection of multiple pesticides in groundwater. Based on an analytical method of 56 pesticides, 30 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed. At least 4 pesticides were detected in each sample and 32 out of 56 pesticides were detected. The average detected levels of individual pesticides were approximately 10-100 ng/L. Organophosphorus pesticides and carbamate pesticides were the dominant pesticides, and their percentage of total pesticide concentrations were 35.9% and 55.5%, respectively. Based on the spatial distribution, the characteristic of nonpoint source pollution was indicated in the whole study area except for a point source pollution with the influence of a sewage oxidation pond. Nine core pesticides and three distinct clusters of the core pesticides with various concentration patterns were revealed by cluster analysis. Linear regression identified a significant relationship between the cumulative detections and the cumulative concentrations, providing access to identify the outlying contaminant events that deviate substantially from the linear trend. A new insight for prediction of pesticide occurrence was provided by the Pearson correlation between some individual pesticide concentrations and the cumulative detections or the cumulative concentrations. According to health risk assessment, the residual pesticides posed medium risks for children and infants and approximately 90% of risks were composed of β-HCH, dimethoate, ethyl-p-nitrophenyl phenylphosphonothioate and methyl parathion. These findings contributed to establishing a database for future monitoring and control of pesticides in agricultural areas.

Risk assessment of an organochlorine pesticide mixture in the surface waters of Qingshitan Reservoir in Southwest China

Risk assessment of single pollutants has been extensively studied. However, the co-exposure of pollutants in a real environment may pose a greater risk than single chemicals. In this study, concentration addition-based risk quotients were applied to the risk assessment of the 15 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) mixtures (α-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), β-HCH, γ-HCH, δ-HCH, heptachlor, aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, chlordane, α-endosulfan, p,p′-dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethylene, endrin, β-endosulfan, p,p′-dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethane, p,p′-dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane, and methoxychlor) detected in the surface water (reservoirs, ponds, and streams) of Qingshitan Reservoir in Southwest China from 2014 to 2016 by summing up the toxic units (RQ_STU) of the toxicity data from the individual chemicals. The RQ_STU of the OCPs mixture exceeded 1 in 45.23% of the 283 surface water samples based on acute data and an assessment factor of 100, indicating a potential risk for the aquatic environment (fish). Methoxychlor and γ-HCH contributed the most toxicities in the pesticide mixtures toward Daphnia and fish and provided at least 50% of the mixture toxicity in all samples with RQ_STU larger than 1. The most sensitive organism to realistic OCPs mixtures in the surface waters of Qingshitan Reservoir was fish, followed by Daphnia and algae. The values of the maximum cumulative ratio for all samples indicated that the risk assessment based on single chemicals underestimated the pesticide mixture toxicities, which shows that special consideration should be made for the ecological risk of pesticide mixtures in the aquatic environment.

HCHs and DDTs in Yellow River of Henan section-a typical agricultural area in China: levels, distributions and risks

The levels, potential sources and ecological risks of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) in Yellow River of Henan section, a typical agricultural area in China, were investigated. Surface water samples and suspended particulate matters (SPMs) were collected from 23 sites during two seasons. In wet season, the residues of ∑HCHs (α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH and δ-HCH) and ∑DDTs (p,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD) ranged from 41.7 to 290 and 4.42 to 269 ng/L in surface water, while those varied from 0.86 to 157 and 1.79 to 96.1 ng/g dw in SPM, respectively. Moreover, in surface water, the levels of HCHs and DDTs in wet season were much higher than those in dry season. The reverse was true for residues of HCHs and DDTs in SPM. Compared with the large rivers in other regions, the levels of HCHs and DDTs in the studied area ranked at high levels and the residual concentrations might cause adverse biological risk, especially for ∑HCHs during wet season. Distributions of HCHs and DDTs delineated that the input of tributaries made a significant effect on the residue of HCHs and DDTs in the mainstream. ∑HCHs in surface water were consist of 26.7 % α-HCH, 30.0 % β-HCH, 37.9 % γ-HCH and 5.45 % δ-HCH and those in SPM contained 5.16 % α-HCH, 22.1 % β-HCH, 60.5 % γ-HCH and 12.2 % δ-HCH on average. Combined with ratios of α-HCH/γ-HCH in surface water (0.70) and in SPM (0.09), the results strongly indicated that lindane was recently used or discharged in the studied area. The mean percentage of DDTs' isomers were 28.7 % p,p'-DDT, 29.8 % o,p'-DDT, 28.1 % p,p'-DDE and 13.4 % p,p'-DDD in surface water, while those were 12.5 % p,p'-DDT, 31.8 % o,p'-DDT, 30.5 % p,p'-DDE and 25.1 % p,p'-DDD in SPM. The ratios of (DDE + DDD)/∑DDTs and o,p'-DDT/p,p'-DDT revealed that the DDTs in the studied area mainly derived from long-term weathering of technical DDTs residue and the input of dicofol.
