Nature and extent of metal-contaminated soils in urban environments (keynote talk)

Burden of cardiovascular disease attributable to dietary lead exposure in adolescents and adults in China

Lead is a naturally occurring metal with a range of industrial applications; however, it can cause adverse health effects upon human exposure. Even if blood lead levels (BLLs) in the human body are in the acceptable range, it is independently associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the leading cause of death in China. However, the role of lead exposure in CVD outcomes has not been quantified well. A top-down approach was adopted in this study to calculate the population attribution fraction (PAF) by combining pooled BLLs in the Chinese population reported between 2001 and 2022 with the relative risk (RR) of lead-induced CVD. Subsequently, the disease burden (DB) of lead-induced CVD was estimated and expressed in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and the attribution analysis about various sources of lead exposure was performed. Among Chinese adolescents and adults, BLLs of 5.50 ± 2.45 μg/dL resulted in an estimated total DB (×10⁶ DALYs) of 2.21 (2.07-2.32) for CVD, including 1.18 (1.12-1.25), 0.71 (0.69-0.74), 0.23 (0.15-0.26), and 0.02 (0.02-0.02) for stroke, and ischemic, hypertensive, and rheumatic heart diseases, respectively. Dietary lead intake was a major contributor to the DB (68.1%), and lead ingested through food was responsible for 15.1 × 10⁵ DALYs of the CVD burden. Guangxi, Hunan, and Yunnan regions in China reported higher BLLs in adolescents and adults, and the DB of lead-induced CVD was higher in Hunan, Henan, and Sichuan. Lead is a risk factor for CVD that can cause significant DB. Further practical and cost-effective efforts to reduce lead exposure are urgently needed.

Legacy Lead in Urban Garden Soils: Communicating Risk and Limiting Exposure

Lead (Pb) exposure has long been recognized as a hazard to human health. Urban garden soils often contain elevated levels of Pb, mainly from legacy sources, which is a main barrier for urban gardening. The capacity of gardeners to access, understand, and act on scientific data related to soil contamination is also variable. This synthesis paper briefly summarizes the current scientific knowledge on soil Pb in urban gardens. Our objective is to produce clear recommendations about assessing actual risks and limiting exposure. First, we synthesize the nature and extent of soil contamination with Pb, and then describe how the bioavailability and risk of this contamination to humans is assessed. We then go on to potential exposure pathway through plants and remediation methods to improve soil health and reduce human exposure. We have developed best management practices for practitioners that include: (1) urban soil testing should be prioritized because of the high probability of Pb contamination, and urban gardening should not begin until thorough testing or remediation has been done; (2) documentation of land-use history should be required in all property transactions so that the potential for soil (and other) contamination can be clearly identified; (3) amendments cannot be relied upon as a treatment for contaminated soils to reduce risk to gardeners because they do not always make contaminants less harmful; (4) certain crops (such as fruiting vegetables) are much less susceptible to contamination than others and thus should be prioritized in urban gardens; (5) wherever feasible, raised beds filled with upcycled local mineral and organic materials are the preferred substrate for urban gardening. Further monitoring of potentially contaminated and remediated soils as well as effective communication with the public are necessary to ensure human safety.

Global issues in setting legal limits on soil metal contamination: A case study of Chile

The establishment of legal limits for soil contamination with trace elements is a global issue that has not yet been resolved. However, the resolution of any global problem begins at the national level. In this vein, we present the case of Chile, the world's leading copper producer, where soil contamination by trace elements in mining areas has been severe. We evaluated the magnitude of the ecological and human health risks from exposure to arsenic (As), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in soils of the La Ligua and Petorca basins, two important mining areas in Chile. Contrary to what might be expected in soils affected by Cu mining activities, As was identified as the most hazardous element in the studied soils, both in terms of ecological and human health risks. On the other hand, Chile does not currently have specific legislation establishing legal limits on soil contamination with trace elements. Since Chile is geochemically similar to New Zealand, Mexico, and Italy, we used the limits of these three countries as benchmarks. We determined the background concentrations of As, Cu, Zn, and Pb in the soils of the two river basins under study and found that they tend to exceed the limits established by foreign laws. We also found that the differences in background elemental concentrations in the studied soils were primarily due to the varied lithology of soil-forming rocks. This means that absolute "one-limit-fits-all" values of element concentrations may not be adequate to regulate the level of soil contamination in areas affected by mining. As a fundamental first step, it is necessary to establish background soil concentrations of trace elements in each river basin in Chile. It is clear that Chile urgently needs to move from rubber-stamping foreign laws to the development of national legislation on soil metal contamination.

Effects of soil lead exposure and land use characteristics on neurodevelopment among children under 3 years of age in northern Taiwan

Lead (Pb) exposure increases the risks of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. Child-specific activities and land use scenarios may lead to elevated opportunities for Pb exposure through the soil. Therefore, we investigated hair and fingernail Pb concentrations among young children in northern Taiwan, in relation to soil Pb pollution and land use characteristics. We also explored the effect of the Pb exposure burden and land use scenarios on neurobehavioral development. In total, 139 healthy children under 3 years of age were recruited in October 2011 to April 2014. Pb levels in hair and fingernail samples were determined using an inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometer. Pb concentrations in soils and land use types surrounding the children's homes were accessed by a geographic information system to identify any associations with hair Pb levels. The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (Bayley-III) were used to evaluate the cognitive, language, and motor development of the children. A multivariable regression model was performed to assess the effects of soil Pb levels and land-use status on Pb exposure in children, as well as associations of Pb exposure and land-use scenarios with neurodevelopmental abilities. Geometric mean Pb concentrations in hair, fingernails, and soil were 2.9 ± 4.8 μg/g, 0.8 ± 5.1 μg/g, and 20.8 ± 4.3 mg/kg, respectively. The multivariable analysis indicated that soil Pb concentrations and green areas around residences had potential links with Pb exposure among children in northern Taiwan. Hair Pb concentrations were negatively associated with expressive language scores. Soil Pb exposure was positively associated with hair Pb concentrations. Land use types around the children's homes in northern Taiwan were associated with their neurodevelopment. Increased green areas were negatively associated with hair Pb concentrations. Living near a highway may have had negative impacts on gross motor scores. A healthy residence can avoid potential health risks for children during their early life.

Perspectives on the Health Effects of Hurricanes: A Review and Challenges

Hurricanes are devastating natural disasters which dramatically modify the physical landscape and alter the socio-physical and biochemical characteristics of the environment, thus exposing the affected communities to new environmental stressors, which persist for weeks to months after the hurricane. This paper has three aims. First, it conceptualizes potential direct and indirect health effects of hurricanes and provides an overview of factors that exacerbate the health effects of hurricanes. Second, it summarizes the literature on the health impact of hurricanes. Finally, it examines the time lag between the hurricane (landfall) and the occurrence of diseases. Two major findings emerge from this paper. Hurricanes are shown to cause and exacerbate multiple diseases, and most adverse health impacts peak within six months following hurricanes. However, chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and mental disorders, continue to occur for years following the hurricane impact.

The limits of lead (Pb) phytoextraction and possibilities of phytostabilization in contaminated soil: a critical review

This review article focuses on lead (Pb), one of the most ubiquitous and harmful toxicants found in soil. Our objective is to address misconceptions regarding the ability of plants to uptake Pb through their roots and translocate it to above-ground tissues, and their ability to act as hyperaccumulators and thereby phytoextract Pb. In accordance with a number of cited definitions, we suggest that species capable of Pb phytoextraction can be rated with the following three criteria: (1) root uptake above a nominal threshold of 1,000 mg Pb/kg, (2) bioconcentration factor (BCF or shoot/soil concentration) >1, and (3) translocation factor (TF or shoot/root concentration) > 1. We review the literature in the updated USDA Phytoremediation Database and conclude that without amendments: no plant has met all three criteria; no plant has been confirmed as a Pb hyperaccumulator. Our analysis suggests that Pb phytoextraction is not a viable remediation option. Pb phytostabilization, however, may be an effective remediation tool in a variety of settings. Planting some of the many species capable of tolerating soil Pb exposure and sequestering it in or around the root zone will limit Pb movement into other ecosystems, prevent resuspended dusts, and mitigate Pb exposure.

Remediation of an urban garden with elevated levels of soil contamination

Urban gardening is popular in many cities. However, many urban soils are contaminated and pose risks to human health. This study was conducted in a highly publicized urban garden in Brooklyn, NY with elevated Pb and As levels. Our objectives were to: (1) assess the nature and extent of Pb and As contamination at this site; (2) evaluate the effectiveness of amendments on reducing the bioaccessibility and phytoavailability of Pb and As in soil; and (3) assess the potential exposure of children to Pb and As through direct and indirect exposure pathways. Field surveys of the site revealed that contamination was highly concentrated in one area of the garden associated with fruit tree production. Field plots were established in this area, with three different treatments (bone meal, compost, sulfur) and an unamended control. Bioaccessibility of Pb was significantly reduced by all three treatments compared to the control (33%): bone meal (24%), compost (23%), sulfur (24%). In this study, As bioaccessibility remained high (80-93%) with or without treatments. We found that the effectiveness of soil remediation with amendments is variable and often limited, and contaminated sites can still pose a significant risk to urban gardeners. The results of a simple assessment model suggested that Pb and As exposure was mostly from soil and dust ingestion, rather than vegetable consumption. This work is unique in that it evaluates actual elevated levels of contamination, in actively gardened urban soils, in a highly visible public context. It fills important gaps between basic research and analysis of human exposure to toxic trace metals that can be a constraint on a highly beneficial activity.

Chilean regulations on metal-polluted soils: The need to advance from adapting foreign laws towards developing sovereign legislation

Chile as a major international Cu producer faces serious soil contamination issues in mining areas. Currently Chile does not have any specific law governing the maximum permissible concentrations of metals in soils to protect ecosystems and human health. Chile heavily relies on the use of environmental laws of 14 foreign countries; the choice of the country depends on the similarity of its environmental conditions with those in Chile. In this study, we used an online database to compare the similarity of Chilean rocks to those in foreign countries. Likewise, we performed soil sampling and determined the background concentrations of Cu, As, Pb, and Zn in soils of the Aconcagua basin, the largest river basin in the Valparaiso Region of central Chile. The results showed that geochemical patterns in Chile have the greatest resemblance to New Zealand, Mexico, and Italy. The background Cu concentration in the Aconcagua basin (134 mg kg^-1) exceeded the legislated limits of New Zealand (100 mg kg^-1) and Italy (120 mg kg^-1), whereas the background Zn concentration (200 mg kg^-1) exceeded the legislated limit of Italy (150 mg kg^-1). Due to the elevated natural abundance of Cu and Zn in Chile, international laws should not be applied in Chile for the assessment of soil contamination. In addition, we assessed ecological risk using the results of our previous studies obtained by analyzing native field-contaminated soils of the Valparaiso region. In the Aconcagua basin, Cu posed high risk for plants in 11% of the samples, whereas As posed high risk for earthworms in 48% of the samples. We suggest that future studies are required to search for other organisms that can serve as biomarkers of metal toxicity because our previous studies were limited to plants and earthworms. Importantly, As posed high risk to human health in 25% of the samples in our study. There is a need for future studies to demonstrate empirically an association between soil As and children's blood As in order to establish the national threshold values of soil As to protect human health. We conclude that there is an urgent need in Chile to advance from the current approach of adapting foreign laws to developing Chilean sovereign environmental legislation.

Estimating the national burden of mild intellectual disability in children exposed to dietary lead in China

The effects of lead as a dietary pollutant remain a global public health concern that needs urgent resolution. Children are highly susceptible to the adverse outcomes of lead pollution, as even low levels of lead may cause irreversible damage to intellectual development. Since several sources of lead exposure are present in the environment, it is necessary to identify the attributable burden of lead-related diseases arising from different exposure sources. In the present study, we used epidemiological data from studies around the nation to estimate the burden of mild intellectual disability (MID) attributed to lead exposure sources by using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). To this end, a dose-response approach was used and a model comprising three components was established: exposure, dose-response, and DALYs module. In Chinese children aged 0-6 years, blood lead levels (BLLs) of 5.34 ± 3.09 μg/dL resulted in a MID incidence rate of 12.84 cases per 1000 children, with an estimated burden of disease (BoD) of 42.23 DALYs per 1000 children. Owing to dietary lead exposure, 36.64 healthy life years per 1000 children were lost, which was notably higher than the outcomes associated with exposure from other sources. This was consistent with the result that dietary exposure was the main contributor to children's lead exposure, accounting for 86.76%. According to the regional distribution based on the existing literature, the areas in China with higher BLLs were Heilongjiang, Shanxi, and Jiangxi. Our findings provided the information for lead risk management decisions and policies making.

Advanced determination of the spatial gradient of human health risk and ecological risk from exposure to As, Cu, Pb, and Zn in soils near the Ventanas Industrial Complex (Puchuncaví, Chile)

The townships of Puchuncaví and Quintero, on the coast of central Chile, have soils contaminated by atmospheric deposition of sulfur dioxide and trace elements from the nearby Ventanas Industrial Complex. The purpose of this study was to evaluate potential human health and ecological risks, by determining the spatial distribution of soil total concentrations arsenic (As), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in these townships. Total concentrations of these elements were determined in 245 topsoil samples, used to generate continuous distribution maps. The background concentrations of Cu, As, Pb, and Zn in the studied soils were 100, 16, 35, and 122 mg kg^-1, respectively. The concentrations of Cu, As, and Pb were positively correlated with each other, suggesting that their source is the Ventanas copper smelter. On the other hand, correlations for Zn were weaker than for other trace elements, suggesting low impact of the Ventanas copper smelter on spatial distribution of Zn. Indeed, only 6% of the study area exhibited Zn concentrations above the background level. In contrast, 77, 32 and 35% of the study area presented Cu, As, and Pb concentrations, respectively, above the background level. The carcinogenic risk due to exposure to As was above the threshold value of 10^-04 in the population of young children (1-5 years old) on 27% of the study area. These risk values are classified as unacceptable, which require specific intervention by the Chilean government. Based on the estimated concentrations of exchangeable Cu, 10, 15, and 75% of the study area exhibited high, medium, and low phytotoxicity risk, respectively.

The legacy lead deposition in soils and its impact on cognitive function in preschool-aged children in the United States

Surface soil contamination has been long recognized as an important pathway of human lead exposure, and is now a worldwide health concern. This study estimates the causal effects of exposure to lead in topsoil on cognitive ability among 5-year-old children. We draw on individual level data from the 2000 U.S. Census, and USGS data on lead in topsoil covering a broad set of counties across the United States. Using an instrumental variable approach relying on the 1944 Interstate Highway System Plan, we find that higher lead in topsoil increases considerably the probability of 5-year-old boys experiencing cognitive difficulties such as learning, remembering, concentrating, or making decisions. Living in counties with topsoil lead concentration above the national median roughly doubles the probability of 5-year-old boys having cognitive difficulties. Nevertheless, it does not seem to affect 5-year-old girls, consistent with previous studies. Importantly, the adverse effects of lead exposure on boys are found even in counties with levels of topsoil lead concentration considered low by the guidelines from the U.S. EPA and state agencies. These findings are concerning because they suggest that legacy lead may continue to impair cognition today, both in the United States and in other countries that have considerable lead deposition in topsoil.

Children's Blood Lead Seasonality in Flint, Michigan (USA), and Soil-Sourced Lead Hazard Risks

In Flint; MI; USA; a public health crisis resulted from the switching of the water supply from Lake Huron to a more corrosive source from the Flint River in April 2014; which caused lead to leach from water lines. Between 2010 and 2015; Flint area children’s average blood lead patterns display consistent peaks in the third quarter of the year. The third quarter blood lead peaks displayed a declining trend between 2010 and 2013; then rose abruptly between the third quarters of 2013 from 3.6% blood lead levels ≥5 µg/dL to a peak of about 7% in the third quarter of 2014; an increase of approximately 50%. The percentage of blood lead level ≥5 µg/dL in the first quarter of 2015 then dropped to 2.3%; which was the same percentage as the first quarter of 2014 (prior to the Flint River water source change). The Flint quarterly blood lead level peak then rose to about 6% blood lead levels ≥ 5 µg/dL in the third quarter of 2015; and then declined to about 2.5% in the fourth quarter of 2015. Soil lead data collected by Edible Flint food collaborative reveal generally higher soil lead values in the metropolitan center for Flint; with lower values in the outskirts of the city. The questions that are not being asked is why did children’s blood lead levels display a seasonal blood lead pattern before the introduction of the new water supply in Flint; and what are the implications of these seasonal blood lead patterns? Based upon previous findings in Detroit and other North American cities we infer that resuspension to the air of lead in the form of dust from lead contaminated soils in Flint appears to be a persistent contribution to lead exposure of Flint children even before the change in the water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River.

A Temporal Association between Accumulated Petrol (Gasoline) Lead Emissions and Motor Neuron Disease in Australia

Background: The age standardised death rate from motor neuron disease (MND) has increased from 1.29 to 2.74 per 100,000, an increase of 112.4% between 1959 and 2013. It is clear that genetics could not have played a causal role in the increased rate of MND deaths over such a short time span. We postulate that environmental factors are responsible for this rate increase. We focus on lead additives in Australian petrol as a possible contributing environmental factor. Methods: The associations between historical petrol lead emissions and MND death trends in Australia between 1962 and 2013 were examined using linear regressions. Results: Regression results indicate best fit correlations between a 20 year lag of petrol lead emissions and age-standardised female death rate (R² = 0.86, p = 4.88 × 10⁻²³), male age standardised death rate (R² = 0.86, p = 9.4 × 10⁻²³) and percent all cause death attributed to MND (R² = 0.98, p = 2.6 × 10⁻⁴⁴). Conclusion: Legacy petrol lead emissions are associated with increased MND death trends in Australia. Further examination of the 20 year lag between exposure to petrol lead and the onset of MND is warranted.
