Soil amendments for vanadium remediation: a review of remediation of vanadium in soil through chemical stabilization and bioremediation

Research on the optimal ratio of improved electrolytic manganese residue substrate about Pennisetum sinese Roxb growth effects

Electrolytic manganese slag (EMR) is a solid waste generated in the manganese hydrometallurgy process. It not only takes up significant land space but also contains Mn2+, which can lead to environmental contamination. There is a need for research on the treatment and utilization of EMR. Improved EMR substrate for Pennisetum sinese Roxb growth was determined in pot planting experiments. The study tested the effects of leaching solution, microorganisms, leaf cell structures, and growth data. Results indicated a substrate of 45% EMR, 40% phosphogypsum, 5% Hericium erinaceus fungi residue, 5% quicklime, and 5% dolomite sand significantly increased the available phosphorus content (135.54 ± 2.88 μg·g-1) by 17.95 times, compared to pure soil, and enhanced the relative abundance of dominant bacteria. After 240 days, the plant height (147.00 ± 0.52 cm), number of tillers (6), and aerial dry weight (144.00 ± 15.99g) of Pennisetum sinese Roxb increased by 5.81%, 200%, and 32.58%, respectively. Analyses of leaves and leaching solution revealed that the highest leaf Mn content (46.84 ± 2.91 μg·g-1) being 3.38 times higher than in pure soil, and the leaching solution Mn content (0.66 ± 0.13 μg·g-1) was lowest. Our study suggested P. sinese Roxb grown in an improved EMR substrate could be a feasible option for solidification treatment and resource utilization of EMR.

Pyrrhotite-dependent microbial reduction and magnetic separation for efficient vanadium detoxification and recovery in contaminated aquifer

Microbial reduction under anaerobic condition is a promising method for remediating vanadate [V(V)] contamination in aquifers, while V(V) may be re-generated with redox fluctuations. The inability to remove vanadium after remediation has become a key issue limiting bioremediation. In this study, we proposed the use of pyrrhotite, a natural mineral with magnetic properties, to immobilize V(V) to insoluble V(IV) under microbial action and remove vanadium from the aquifer using a magnetic field, which could avoid the problem of V(V) recontamination under redox fluctuating conditions. Up to 49.0 ± 4.7 % of vanadium could be removed from the aquifer by the applied magnetic field, and the vanadium in the aquifer after the reaction was mainly in the acid-extractable and reducible states. pH had a strong effect on the magnetic recovery of V(V), while the influence of initial V(V) concentration was weak. Microbial community structure analysis showed that Thiobacillus, Proteiniphilum, Fermentimonas, and Desulfurivibrio played key roles for V(V) reduction and pyrrhotite oxidation. Structural equation model indicated the positive correlation between these genera with the magnetic recovery of vanadium. Real time-qPCR confirmed the roles of functional genes of V(V) reduction (napA and nirK) and SO42- reduction (dsrA) in such biological processes. This study provides a novel route to sustainable V(V) remediation in aquifers, with synchronous recovery of vanadium resources without rebound.

Vanadium mobilization and redistribution during mineral transformation of vanadium-titanium magnetite tailings with different weathering degrees

Due to the long-term open stockpile, the release of vanadium (V) from V-containing tailings will cause continuous V pollution in the mining area. Previous studies on the concentration and speciation of V primarily focused on surface tailings at a regional scale. However, the mobilization and redistribution of V within the tailing profile during the mineral transformation of tailings remain unclear. Herein, a series of concentrations of V(V) (0-200 mg L-1) solutions were added to the vanadium‑titanium magnetite tailings at different depths separately to simulate the redistribution of dissolved V released from tailings in the solid phase of tailings. During the 56-day incubation, the concentrations of aqueous V in the surface tailings were significantly lower than those in the deep tailings under the same level of V(V) treatment, indicating that the shallow tailings had a stronger immobilization capacity for V than the deep tailings. Morphological analysis and color overlays of the elements demonstrated that most of V was immobilized into the tailings and adsorbed or precipitated by the Fe (hydr)oxides in the tailings in 200 mg L-1 V(V) treatment. This portion of V mainly occurred in acid-soluble and reducible fractions in the tailings after a 7-day incubation, accounting for >71.7 % of the total V. However, these two factions of V with high bioavailability were gradually mineralized over time and transferred to residual V, which is difficult to move and has low bioavailability. Mineral phase analysis revealed that additional V(V) favored the formation of melanovanadite (Ca2V8O20·10H2O) and chromium vanadium oxide (Cr2V4O13) in the tailings. This study reveals that the dissolved V influenced the fractionation and redistribution of solid-phase V during tailing weathering, improving the understanding of the geochemical processes of V in tailing profiles and providing important guidance for the management of V-containing tailings.
