A Fast and Efficient Procedure of Iron Species Determination Based on HPLC with a Short Column and Detection in High Resolution ICP OES

The optimization and application of a new hyphenated procedure for iron ionic speciation, i.e., high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with short cation-exchange column (50 mm × 4 mm) coupled to high resolution inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP hrOES), is presented in this paper. Fe(III) and Fe(II) species were separated on the column with the mobile phase containing pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDCA). The total time of the analysis was approx. 5 min, with a significantly low eluent flow rate (0.5 mL min^-1) compared to the literature. Additionally, a long cation-exchange column (250 mm × 4.0 mm) was used as reference. Depending on the total iron content in the sample, two plasma views were chosen, e.g., an attenuated axial (<2 g kg^-1) and an attenuated radial. The standard addition method was performed for the method's accuracy studies, and the applicability was presented on three types of samples: sediments, soils, and archaeological pottery. This study introduces a fast, efficient, and green method for leachable iron speciation in both geological and pottery samples.

A peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence recovery system based on the interaction of N-doped graphene oxide nanosheets and an oligopeptide for ultra-sensitive and selective copper(II) ion detection

In this paper, a peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence (CL) recovery system based on the interaction of N-doped graphene oxide nanosheets (N-GONs) and an oligopeptide for copper(II) ion detection has been reported. N-GONs as an excellent CL enhancer are prepared by the hydrothermal method using citric acid and ammonia, and the morphology and structure are characterized in detail by TEM, XPS, FT-IR and UV/vis, etc. In the bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)oxalate (TCPO) and hydrogen peroxide (TCPO + H₂O₂) CL reaction system, the addition of N-GONs gives a remarkable CL emission, which can be quenched by an oligopeptide composed of ten amino acid residues due to the interaction between the N-GON plane and the oligopeptide strand. While in the presence of copper(II) ion, the quenched CL is recovered gradually along with the addition of copper(II) ion in the system. Based on the above CL reactions, a TCPO + H₂O₂ + N-GONs + oligopeptide CL system is constructed, achieving an ultra-sensitive and selective detection of copper(II) ion in environmental water samples. The detection limit of this method is as low as 0.2 pmol L^-1, which is at least three orders of magnitude lower than other CL methods. The N-GONs and oligopeptide involved in the CL system are environmentally friendly, making it possess potential in the detection of copper(II) ion in environmental water samples.

Determination of Pb(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Co(II) ions by flame atomic absorption spectrometry in food and water samples after preconcentration by coprecipitation with Mo(VI)-diethyldithiocarbamate

A new, simple, and rapid separation and preconcentration procedure, for determination of Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), and Co(II) ions in environmental real samples, has been developed. The method is based on the combination of coprecipitation of analyte ions by the aid of the Mo(VI)-diethyldithiocarbamate-(Mo(VI)-DDTC) precipitate and flame atomic absorption spectrometric determinations. The effects of experimental conditions like pH of the aqueous solution, amounts of DDTC and Mo(VI), standing time, centrifugation rate and time, sample volume, etc. and also the influences of some foreign ions were investigated in detail on the quantitative recoveries of the analyte ions. The preconcentration factors were found to be 150 for Pb(II), Zn(II) and Co(II), and 200 for Cd(II) ions. The detection limits were in the range of 0.1-2.2 μg L(-1) while the relative standard deviations were found to be lower than 5 % for the studied analyte ions. The accuracy of the method was checked by spiked/recovery tests and the analysis of certified reference material (CRM TMDW-500 Drinking Water). The procedure was successfully applied to seawater and stream water as liquid samples and baby food and dried eggplant as solid samples in order to determine the levels of Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), and Co(II) ions.
