Assessing fire hazard potential and its main drivers in Mazandaran province, Iran: a data-driven approach

Geospatial forest fire risk assessment and zoning by integrating MaxEnt in Gorkha District, Nepal

Forest fires are an imminent danger to natural forest ecosystems, and carrying out zoning studies and forest fire risk assessments are of great practical significance in steering fire prevention, minimizing fire incidents, and limiting the environmental consequences of fire. Using the Gorkha district of Nepal as a case study, this study used remotely sensed high-temperature fire data as the forest fire sample. Nine parameters related to topography, climatic conditions, vegetation, and human intervention were used as environmental variables affecting fire occurrence. Next, a MaxEnt forest fire risk assessment model was generated with GIS and R, which analysed the contribution, significance, and responses of environmental variables to the forest fire in Gorkha District. The findings demonstrate that (1) following a test of sample locations for forest fires, the MaxEnt model has excellent relevance and practicality when applied to fire risk assessment; (2) Out of 2747 fire points in the forest, only 110 Spatio-temporally independent fire points were used for the model building having high and normal confidence level. Regarding Area Under Curve (AUC) values, the training data yielded results of 0.875, while the test data produced acceptable results of 0.861 with a standard deviation of 0.0322; (3) the importance of climatic and Land Use Land Cover (LULC) variables to forest fire are 56.2 % and 32.9 %, respectively, and their contribution to forest fire are 32 % and 47.6 %, respectively. (4) There are numerous and intricate ways that environmental factors influence forest fires. The forest fire response curves to the nine chosen environmental variables are complex and nonlinear rather than linear; Maximum temperature of the warmest month (bio_5), Isothermality (bio_3), Precipitation of Driest Quarter (bio_17) and mean Diurnal Range (bio_2) bear a nonlinear positive link with the possibility of forest fires. In contrast, elevation, slope, temperature seasonality (bio_4), distance from the settlement, and LULC have a favorable stimulating response to the possibility of forest fires within an appropriate interval. (5) In Gorkha, there are geographical differences in the risk of forest fires. Only 12.83 % of the whole area is made up of areas at significantly high risk or above, compared to 87.17 % for high-risk and below.

National-scale spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation fire occurrences using MODIS satellite data

As the risk of climate change increases, robust fire monitoring methods become critical for fire management purposes. National-scale spatiotemporal patterns of the fires and how they relate to vegetation and environmental conditions are not well understood in Zimbabwe. This paper presents a spatially explicit method combining satellite data and spatial statistics in detecting spatiotemporal patterns of fires in Zimbabwe. The Emerging Hot Spot Analysis method was utilized to detect statistically significant spatiotemporal patterns of fire occurrence between the years 2002 and 2021. Statistical analysis was done to determine the association between the spatiotemporal patterns and some environmental variables such as topography, land cover, land use, ecoregions and precipitation. The highest number of fires occurred in September, coinciding with Zimbabwe's observed fire season. The number of fires significantly varied among seasons, with the hot and dry season (August to October) recording the highest fire counts. Additionally, although June, July and November are not part of the official fire season in Zimbabwe, the fire counts recorded for these months were relatively high. This new information has therefore shown the need for revision of the fire season in Zimbabwe. The northern regions were characterized by persistent, oscillating, diminishing and historical spatiotemporal fire hotspots. Agroecological regions IIa and IIb and the Southern Miombo bushveld ecoregion were the most fire-prone areas. The research findings also revealed new critical information about the spatiotemporal fire patterns in various terrestrial ecoregions, land cover, land use, precipitation and topography and highlighted potential areas for effective fire management strategies.

Developing a New Hourly Forest Fire Risk Index Based on Catboost in South Korea

Forest fires can cause enormous damage, such as deforestation and environmental pollution, even with a single occurrence. It takes a lot of effort and long time to restore areas damaged by wildfires. Therefore, it is crucial to know the forest fire risk of a region to appropriately prepare and respond to such disastrous events. The purpose of this study is to develop an hourly forest fire risk index (HFRI) with 1 km spatial resolution using accessibility, fuel, time, and weather factors based on Catboost machine learning over South Korea. HFRI was calculated through an ensemble model that combined an integrated model using all factors and a meteorological model using weather factors only. To confirm the generalized performance of the proposed model, all forest fires that occurred from 2014 to 2019 were validated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) values through one-year-out cross-validation. The AUC value of HFRI ensemble model was 0.8434, higher than the meteorological model. HFRI was compared with the modified version of Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC) used in the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating Systems and Daily Weather Index (DWI), South Korea’s current forest fire risk index. When compared to DWI and the revised FFMC, HFRI enabled a more spatially detailed and seasonally stable forest fire risk simulation. In addition, the feature contribution to the forest fire risk prediction was analyzed through the Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) value of Catboost. The contributing variables were in the order of relative humidity, elevation, road density, and population density. It was confirmed that the accessibility factors played very important roles in forest fire risk modeling where most forest fires were caused by anthropogenic factors. The interaction between the variables was also examined.

Performance Evaluation of Machine Learning Methods for Forest Fire Modeling and Prediction

Predicting and mapping fire susceptibility is a top research priority in fire-prone forests worldwide. This study evaluates the abilities of the Bayes Network (BN), Naïve Bayes (NB), Decision Tree (DT), and Multivariate Logistic Regression (MLP) machine learning methods for the prediction and mapping fire susceptibility across the Pu Mat National Park, Nghe An Province, Vietnam. The modeling methodology was formulated based on processing the information from the 57 historical fires and a set of nine spatially explicit explanatory variables, namely elevation, slope degree, aspect, average annual temperate, drought index, river density, land cover, and distance from roads and residential areas. Using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and seven other performance metrics, the models were validated in terms of their abilities to elucidate the general fire behaviors in the Pu Mat National Park and to predict future fires. Despite a few differences between the AUC values, the BN model with an AUC value of 0.96 was dominant over the other models in predicting future fires. The second best was the DT model (AUC = 0.94), followed by the NB (AUC = 0.939), and MLR (AUC = 0.937) models. Our robust analysis demonstrated that these models are sufficiently robust in response to the training and validation datasets change. Further, the results revealed that moderate to high levels of fire susceptibilities are associated with ~19% of the Pu Mat National Park where human activities are numerous. This study and the resultant susceptibility maps provide a basis for developing more efficient fire-fighting strategies and reorganizing policies in favor of sustainable management of forest resources.
