Using morphometric analysis for assessment of flash flood susceptibility in the Mediterranean region of Turkey

Evaluation of urban flood susceptibility through integrated Bivariate statistics and Geospatial technology

Flood disasters are frequent natural disasters that occur annually during the monsoon season and significantly impact urban areas. This area is characterized by impermeable concrete surfaces, which increase runoff and are particularly susceptible to flooding. Therefore, this study aims to adopt Bi-variate statistical methods such as frequency ratio (FR) and weight of evidence (WOE) to map flood susceptibility in an urbanized watershed. The study area encompasses an urbanized watershed surrounding the Chennai Metropolitan area in southern India. The essential parameters considered for flood susceptibility zonation include geomorphology, soil, land use/land cover (LU/LC), rainfall, drainage, slope, aspect, Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The flood susceptibility map was derived using 70% of randomly selected flood areas from the flood inventory database, and the other 30% was used for validation using the area under curve (AUC) method. The AUC method produced a frequency ratio of 0.806 and a weight of evidence value of 0.865 contributing to the zonation of the three classes. The study further investigates the impact of urbanization on flood susceptibility and is further classified into high, moderate, and low flood risk zones. With the abrupt change in climatic scenarios, there is an increase in the risk of flash floods. The results of this study can be used by policymakers and planners in developing a preparedness system to mitigate economic, human, and property losses due to floods in any urbanized watershed.

Morphometric analysis of Halda River basin, Bangladesh, using GIS and remote sensing techniques

GIS and remote sensing techniques were effectively used to analyse the morphometric parameters including linear, geometric, basin texture (aerial) and relief aspects of the Halda River Basin, Bangladesh. Along with measuring the morphometric parameters using predetermined formulas, advanced geo-computing tools of spatial analysis, cartography, math, geoprocessing and geometric analysis were employed to carry out the spatial distribution of selected parameters, especially aerial parameters. The linear aspect indicates the basin is six-order and oval-shaped. The bifurcation ratio (4.03) and relevant parameters indicate the moderate effect of geology and structural control is evident. The mean stream length (1.27) and Rho value (ranges between 0.11 and 0.20) indicate high runoff in steep areas and hydrologic storage capacity in flat areas. The stream frequency (0.83), drainage density (1.22), drainage intensity (0.68), infiltration ratio (1.02), length of the overland flow (0.41), and constant of channel maintenance (0.82) indicate the presence of moderate hard rock, less structural disturbances and moderate to high surface runoff in the basin. Basin relief (489 m), relative relief (2.02), ruggedness number (400), Melton's ruggedness number (12.43), and mean slope (9.33%) indicate the potential of high erosion and material transfer. The spatial distribution of selected aerial aspects significantly correlated to elevation and slope. The hierarchical pattern and spatial distribution of the morphometric parameters indicate areas with high slopes and lower-order streams have a high potential to be affected by soil erosion, landslides and flash floods, elsewhere, the areas with low slopes are prone to short-duration riverine floods. The research findings will help policymakers for integrated river basin management, agricultural development, and water management. In addition, researchers of morphohydrological, geological and climatological research will be beneficiary.

Flood susceptibility mapping using Sentinel 1 and frequency ratio technique in Jinjiram River watershed, India

Assam is one of the most flood-prone states in India, and the state frequently experiences catastrophic floods that cause significant damage in terms of loss of life and property. Flood susceptibility is considered the most essential and crucial input for managing floodplains and fostering local and regional development. This study focuses on the generation of flood susceptibility maps using the Frequency Ratio (FR) technique and microwave remote sensing inputs in the Jinjiram watershed which experienced disastrous flooding in 2020. The study has been carried out by taking into consideration of different morphological, lithological, and hydrological factors. In this study the flood inventory map was created by extracting the time series SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) Sentinel 1 GRD (Ground Range Detected) images of flooded areas for the past 5 years, from 2016 to 2020. A total of 72 inventory samples were identified of which 70% of total flooded samples were chosen for training and 30% for model testing at random basis. Applying these FR methods, the study determines a range of flood susceptibility which was then divided into five classes, from very low to very high. The Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the accuracy of flood susceptibility maps generated using FR models. The AUC of ROC in flood susceptibility mapping is 0.81167 achieved, corresponding to a prediction accuracy of 81.17%. The findings can be used to calculate risk, develop flood control measures and infrastructural policies, and formulate sustainable water management policies for the watershed.
