Privacy-Preserving Breast Cancer Classification: A Federated Transfer Learning Approach

Breast cancer is deadly cancer causing a considerable number of fatalities among women in worldwide. To enhance patient outcomes as well as survival rates, early and accurate detection is crucial. Machine learning techniques, particularly deep learning, have demonstrated impressive success in various image recognition tasks, including breast cancer classification. However, the reliance on large labeled datasets poses challenges in the medical domain due to privacy issues and data silos. This study proposes a novel transfer learning approach integrated into a federated learning framework to solve the limitations of limited labeled data and data privacy in collaborative healthcare settings. For breast cancer classification, the mammography and MRO images were gathered from three different medical centers. Federated learning, an emerging privacy-preserving paradigm, empowers multiple medical institutions to jointly train the global model while maintaining data decentralization. Our proposed methodology capitalizes on the power of pre-trained ResNet, a deep neural network architecture, as a feature extractor. By fine-tuning the higher layers of ResNet using breast cancer datasets from diverse medical centers, we enable the model to learn specialized features relevant to different domains while leveraging the comprehensive image representations acquired from large-scale datasets like ImageNet. To overcome domain shift challenges caused by variations in data distributions across medical centers, we introduce domain adversarial training. The model learns to minimize the domain discrepancy while maximizing classification accuracy, facilitating the acquisition of domain-invariant features. We conducted extensive experiments on diverse breast cancer datasets obtained from multiple medical centers. Comparative analysis was performed to evaluate the proposed approach against traditional standalone training and federated learning without domain adaptation. When compared with traditional models, our proposed model showed a classification accuracy of 98.8% and a computational time of 12.22 s. The results showcase promising enhancements in classification accuracy and model generalization, underscoring the potential of our method in improving breast cancer classification performance while upholding data privacy in a federated healthcare environment.

Improved tomato leaf disease classification through adaptive ensemble models with exponential moving average fusion and enhanced weighted gradient optimization

Tomato is one of the most popular and most important food crops consumed globally. The quality and quantity of yield by tomato plants are affected by the impact made by various kinds of diseases. Therefore, it is essential to identify these diseases early so that it is possible to reduce the occurrences and effect of the diseases on tomato plants to improve the overall crop yield and to support the farmers. In the past, many research works have been carried out by applying the machine learning techniques to segment and classify the tomato leaf images. However, the existing machine learning-based classifiers are not able to detect the new types of diseases more accurately. On the other hand, deep learning-based classifiers with the support of swarm intelligence-based optimization techniques are able to enhance the classification accuracy, leading to the more effective and accurate detection of leaf diseases. This research paper proposes a new method for the accurate classification of tomato leaf diseases by harnessing the power of an ensemble model in a sample dataset of tomato plants, containing images pertaining to nine different types of leaf diseases. This research introduces an ensemble model with an exponential moving average function with temporal constraints and an enhanced weighted gradient optimizer that is integrated into fine-tuned Visual Geometry Group-16 (VGG-16) and Neural Architecture Search Network (NASNet) mobile training methods for providing improved learning and classification accuracy. The dataset used for the research consists of 10,000 tomato leaf images categorized into nine classes for training and validating the model and an additional 1,000 images reserved for testing the model. The results have been analyzed thoroughly and benchmarked with existing performance metrics, thus proving that the proposed approach gives better performance in terms of accuracy, loss, precision, recall, receiver operating characteristic curve, and F1-score with values of 98.7%, 4%, 97.9%, 98.6%, 99.97%, and 98.7%, respectively.

Enhancing Lung Nodule Classification: A Novel CViEBi-CBGWO Approach with Integrated Image Preprocessing

Cancer detection and accurate classification pose significant challenges for medical professionals, as it is described as a lethal illness. Diagnosing the malignant lung nodules in its initial stage significantly enhances the recovery and survival rates. Therefore, a novel model named convolutional vision Elman bidirectional-based crossover boosted grey wolf optimization (CViEBi-CBGWO) has been proposed to enhance classification accuracy. CT images selected for further preprocessing are obtained from the LUNA16 dataset and LIDC-IDRI dataset. The data undergoes preprocessing phases involving normalization, data augmentation, and filtering to improve the generalization ability as well as image quality. The local features within the preprocessed images are extracted by implementing the convolutional neural network (CNN). For extracting the global features within the preprocessed images, the vision transformer (ViT) model consists of five encoder blocks. The attained local and global features are combined to generate the feature map. The Elman bidirectional long short-term memory (EBiLSTM) model is applied to categorize the generated feature map as benign and malignant. The crossover operation is integrated with the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm, and the combined form of CBGWO fine-tunes the parameters of the CViEBi model, eliminating the problem of local optima. Experimental validation is conducted using various evaluation measures to assess effectiveness. Comparative analysis demonstrates a superior classification accuracy of 98.72% in the proposed method compared to existing methods.

Self-attention-based generative adversarial network optimized with color harmony algorithm for brain tumor classification

This paper proposes a novel approach, BTC-SAGAN-CHA-MRI, for the classification of brain tumors using a SAGAN optimized with a Color Harmony Algorithm. Brain cancer, with its high fatality rate worldwide, especially in the case of brain tumors, necessitates more accurate and efficient classification methods. While existing deep learning approaches for brain tumor classification have been suggested, they often lack precision and require substantial computational time.The proposed method begins by gathering input brain MR images from the BRATS dataset, followed by a pre-processing step using a Mean Curvature Flow-based approach to eliminate noise. The pre-processed images then undergo the Improved Non-Sub sampled Shearlet Transform (INSST) for extracting radiomic features. These features are fed into the SAGAN, which is optimized with a Color Harmony Algorithm to categorize the brain images into different tumor types, including Gliomas, Meningioma, and Pituitary tumors. This innovative approach shows promise in enhancing the precision and efficiency of brain tumor classification, holding potential for improved diagnostic outcomes in the field of medical imaging. The accuracy acquired for the brain tumor identification from the proposed method is 99.29%. The proposed BTC-SAGAN-CHA-MRI technique achieves 18.29%, 14.09% and 7.34% higher accuracy and 67.92%,54.04%, and 59.08% less Computation Time when analyzed to the existing models, like Brain tumor diagnosis utilizing deep learning convolutional neural network with transfer learning approach (BTC-KNN-SVM-MRI); M3BTCNet: multi model brain tumor categorization under metaheuristic deep neural network features optimization (BTC-CNN-DEMFOA-MRI), and efficient method depending upon hierarchical deep learning neural network classifier for brain tumour categorization (BTC-Hie DNN-MRI) respectively.

Hybrid Whale Archimedes Optimization-based MLPNN model for soil nutrient classification and pH prediction

Soil fertility and environmental factors play an important role in improving productivity and cropland quality in the agricultural sector. A new prediction and classification model for the potential of soil nutrients and hydrogen (pH) levels is proposed. The proposed model, Hybrid Whale Archimedes Optimization-based Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (HWAO-MLPNN), is utilized for soil features classification of pH levels, and the soils are collected from the villages such as phosphorous (P), organic carbon (OC), boron (B), and potassium (K). The village-wise soil fertility prediction and classification model aims to improve soil health, reduce harmful fertilizer usage, enhance environmental quality, and achieve more profits. The proposed model combines the Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (MLPNN) model and the Hybrid Whale Archimedes Optimization (HWAO) algorithm to enhance the classification performance on the validation data. The Marathwada dataset is selected to validate the soil nutrient prediction and classification model, and various measuring units such as cross-validation accuracy, Area Under Curve (AUC), accuracy, Mean Squared Error (MSE), G-mean, precision, specificity, and sensitivity are used for evaluation. The comparative study of this paper shows that the proposed HWAO-MLPNN achieved more classification accuracy of 98.1%, cross-validation accuracy of 98.3% for pH classification, and cross-validation accuracy of 97.9% for soil nutrient classification. The proposed model can be utilized to accurately classify soil nutrients and pH levels, which can have a significant impact on improving soil health, reducing harmful fertilizer usage, enhancing environmental quality, and ultimately increasing profitability in the agricultural sector.
