Effect of ethylene glycol on electrochemical and morphological features of platinum electrodeposits from chloroplatinic acid

Palladium Particles Modified by Mixed-Frequency Square-Wave Potential Treatment to Enhance Electrocatalytic Performance for Formic Acid Oxidation

Palladium catalysts have attracted widespread attention as advanced electrocatalysts for the formic acid oxidation (FAO) due to their excellent electrocatalytic activity and relatively high abundance. At present, electrodeposition methods have been widely developed to prepare small-sized and highly-dispersed Pd electrocatalysts. However, the customary use of surfactants would introduce heterogeneous impurities, which requires complicated removal processes. In this work, we reported a two-step electrochemical method that employed square-wave potential treatment (SWPT) to modify electrodeposited Pd particles without the use of capping agents. Under the SWPT with a mixed frequency, Pd particles show significantly reduced size and more dispersed distribution, exhibiting a high mass activity of 1.43 A mg−1 toward FAO, which is 4.6 times higher than the counterpart of commercial Pd/C. The increase in electrocatalytic activity of FAO is attributed to the highly developed surface of palladium particles uniformly distributed over the support surface.

Electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen at platinum nanoparticles dispersed on electrochemically reduced graphene oxide/PEDOT:PSS composites

Composites of commercially available graphene oxide (GO) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) with solvent additive ethylene glycol (EG) were investigated as an alternative support for Pt nanoparticles towards the electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen. The surface characteristics of the materials were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) at rotating disk electrodes (RDEs) and rotating ring-disk electrodes (RRDEs) were used to characterise the electrocatalytic activities of the composites materials. The structural and electrochemical studies reveal that the addition of EG favours the homogeneous distribution of Pt particles with reduced particle size and improves the electrocatalytic properties. A 30% and 16% increase in electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), a 1.2 and 1.1 fold increase in specific area activity (SA), and a 1.5 and 1.2 fold increase in mass activity (MA) were observed for 30% and 40% Pt loading on PEDOT:PSS after the addition of EG. A composite of rGO and PEDOT:PSS(EG) was investigated for different (w/w) ratios of PEDOT:PSS and rGO. The 1 : 2 w/w ratio showed an enhanced catalytic activity with high limiting current, more positive onset potential, higher SA and MA with lower H₂O₂ yield compared to PEDOT:PSS(EG) and rGO and previously reported values for PEDOT:PSS.

Oxygen reduction reaction on Pt-skin Pt3V(111) fuel cell cathode: a density functional theory study

Pt-non-precious transition metals (Pt-NPTMs) alloy electrocatalysts have gained considerable attention to develop cheaper and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this report, density functional theory (DFT) has been applied to study the catalytic activity of Pt-skin Pt₃V(111) electrocatalyst for ORR in PEMFCs. The results revealed that the ORR intermediates (O, OH and OOH) have lower binding energies on Pt-skin Pt₃V(111) compared to pure Pt(111) surface. The ORR on Pt-skin Pt₃V(111) surface proceed via OOH dissociation with an activation energy of 0.33 eV. The formation of OH is found to be the rate determining step with an activation energy of 0.64 eV, which is even lower than in pure Pt(111) surface (0.72 eV). This indicates a better performance of Pt-skin Pt₃V(111) for ORR compared to pure Pt(111) surface. Moreover, the DFT results revealed that the negative formation energy of the Pt₃V alloy and the positive dissolution potential shift of the surface Pt atoms revealed the better stability of Pt-skin Pt₃V(111) surface over pristine Pt(111) surface. Due to the improved activity and better stability, the new Pt₃V alloy electrocatalyst is very promising for the development of low-cost and efficient PEMFCs.
