Faculty versus students: different perceptions of misconducts at university

Introduction

Academic integrity is a goal to be achieved by university institutions, and student academic behavioral misconduct is a phenomenon to be fought and eradicated. Two of the main problems faced by universities in this area are: (1) the lack of consensus among students and faculty on the seriousness of acts considered academic misconduct; and (2) the difficulty of noticing and controlling certain student behaviors. The main aim of this paper is to assess the importance of these two problems.

Methods

For this purpose, the authors compare, on the one hand, students' and teachers' perceptions of the seriousness of different types of dishonest and inappropriate behaviors and, on the other hand, the frequency with which they report that these misconducts occur. Two samples were taken from the responses of students and teachers of the Economics and Business School of the University of Zaragoza. The first consisted of 333 students and the second of 72 teachers. The academic misconducts asked about were grouped into three categories: academic works, exams, and interpersonal relationships in the classroom. Nonparametric tests were used to study the significance of the differences observed in the responses of students and teachers.

Results

Results show that the greatest differences in the assessment of the seriousness of academic misconducts are in the group referring to interpersonal relationships. In terms of frequency, the study reveals that there is a serious problem of moral hazard in some of the behaviors analyzed, since the frequency with which teachers notice these practices is lower than that expressed by students.

Discussion

Based on these results, possible measures to be adopted in universities in order to eradicate the academic misconduct problem are discussed.

Entwicklung und Überprüfung einer Kurzskala zur Messung akademischen Betrugsverhaltens im Selbstbericht

Zusammenfassung: Akademisches Betrugsverhalten ist ein bedeutsames Phänomen, zu dessen Prävalenz und Randbedingungen im Hochschulsektor deutliche Forschungslücken bestehen, insbesondere aufgrund Ermangelung valider und ökonomischer Selbstberichtsmaße. Die vorliegende Kurzskala zur Erfassung akademischen Betrugsverhaltens soll unter Bedingung hoher Testökonomie eine verhaltensbezogene Erfassung von akademischen Betrugsverhalten im Selbstbericht ermöglichen. Die Itemgenese orientierte sich an umfassenden englischsprachigen Verhaltensinventaren. Insgesamt werden mit jeweils einem Item die zentralen Komponenten „Nutzung unerlaubter Hilfsmittel und Hilfestellungen“, „Plagiarismus“ und „Täuschung zur eigenen Vorteilnahme“ erfasst. Analysen zur Testgüte des 3-Item-Maßes in einer Stichprobe von N = 1 994 Studierenden zeigen eine akzeptable interne Konsistenz und ein deutliches Muster konvergenter Validität (Assoziationen mit umfassenderen Verhaltensinventaren und der Persönlichkeitseigenschaft Ehrlichkeit / Bescheidenheit). Konfirmatorische Faktoranalysen verdeutlichen, dass sich die Skala für die latente Modellierung des Konstruktes eignet und sie messinvariant für verschiedene Fachgruppen sowie Geschlechter ist. In der Summe bietet die vorgestellte Kurzskala eine verhaltensbezogene, ökonomische und reliable Messung akademischen Betrugsverhaltens.

Elucidating the Associations Between Achievement Goals and Academic Dishonesty: a Meta-analysis

Academic dishonesty is a pervasive problem undermining the effectiveness of educational institutions. From a motivational perspective, researchers have proposed achievement goals as antecedents of academic dishonesty. Empirical findings corroborate the notion that mastery goals (focus on learning and competence development) are negatively linked to academic dishonesty. However, even though theoretical considerations suggest positive links between performance goals (focus on competence demonstration) and academic dishonesty, empirical findings are mixed. To provide a better understanding of how goals matter for academic dishonesty, we conducted three-level meta-analyses encompassing 163 effect sizes from 33 studies and a total of 19,787 participants. We found a disproportional use of correlational designs (using self-report measures of academic dishonesty) and personal goal measures (opposed to surrounding goal structures). Evidence of publication bias was not found. Our results confirmed the expected negative associations between mastery goals and academic dishonesty and revealed heterogenous findings for performance goals, with indications of positive associations within behavioral and intentional dishonesty measures, but not within self-reports. To further clarify the associations between achievement goals and academic dishonesty, we call for more methodological rigor in the measurement of goals and dishonesty as well as multi-methods approaches when investigating their interplay.

Intention to deceive: undergraduates' perception of fraudulent excuse-making

Purpose

Issues on fraudulent excuses have become a common phenomenon at higher educational institutions. Although these misbehaviours can unfavourably impact the quality of graduates, nonetheless, these issues have been largely ignored as the focus of academic debates is placed more on other academic dishonest behaviours such as cheating in exams and plagiarisms. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to examine undergraduates' perception of fraudulent excuse-making and to offer a fruitful academic discussion on this deceitful behaviour that has been a somewhat undesirable culture in tertiary educational settings.

Design/methodology/approach

An online self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted to 346 undergraduates at a Malaysian public university.

Findings

The results suggest that, while the number is low, fraudulent excuses are indeed being mobilised by undergraduate students in their attempt to avoid academic responsibility. The influence of demographic profiles on fraudulent excuse-making is also evident.

Originality/value

A scarcity of studies on fraudulent excuses has contributed to a lack of understanding of the pertinent reasons and causes leading to the engagement of these misbehaviours. The paper hopes to shed some light that can be beneficial to the relevant managerial authorities within the university in any policy changes in an attempt to curb this problematic behaviour from continuously affecting the inner quality of graduates.

The effects of personality traits and attitudes towards the rule on academic dishonesty among university students

Academic dishonesty is becoming a big concern for the education systems worldwide. Despite much research on the factors associated with academic dishonesty and the methods to alleviate it, it remains a common problem at the university level. In the current study, we conducted a survey to link personality traits (using the HEXACO model) and people’s general attitudes towards the rule (i.e., “rule conditionality” and “perceived obligation to obey the law/rule”) to academic dishonesty among 370 university students. Using correlational analysis and structural equation modeling, the results indicated that both personality traits and attitudes towards the rule significantly predicted academic misconduct. The findings have important implications for researchers and university educators in dealing with academic misconduct.

Self-reported academic performance and academic cheating: Exploring the role of the perceived classroom (in)justice mediators

BACKGROUND

As a point of departure, this study assumes that teaching to impart knowledge is inseparable from its moral role to create an ethical citizenry, such as developing standards of academic integrity.

AIMS

The study aims at delving into how different facets of the sense of (in)justice in the classroom may play a significant role in explaining cheating behaviour, in general, and among low-achieving students, in particular.

SAMPLE AND METHODS

The study was conducted among 5,084 eighth and ninth graders Israeli students. CFA and a structural modelling equations method were used to examine the study's factorial constructs and model, respectively.

RESULTS

Findings pointed to a good fit of the measurement model using SEM. In accordance with the mediating hypothesis, self-reported academic achievement was negatively related to self-reported academic cheating. Moreover, perceived 'school injustice' (procedural and distributive justice as estimates) played a mediating role in explaining the relation between academic performance and cheating behaviour. It is noteworthy, however, that the facet of the personality-like construct of justice sensitivity displayed inconsistent findings and no mediating effect when examined as a separate model.

CONCLUSIONS

Self-reported academic performance and academic cheating among middle school' students were explained more strongly by contextual justice-related factors, namely perceived teachers' distributional and procedural practices in the classroom, than by justice sensitivity, which is a personality factor. Thus, teachers' justice practices seem to be crucial for developing a predisposition to academic honesty.

Readymade Solutions and Students’ Appetite for Plagiarism as Challenges for Online Learning

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of online learning has increased. Inherently, the stakes of a sustainable approach to the challenges raised by the wide access to the Internet, the use of readymade solutions to meet didactical tasks, and students’ appetite for plagiarism have become higher. These challenges can be sustainably managed via a procedure aimed at constructively converting students’ appetite for plagiarism (SAP conversion) into a skill of critically approaching relevant materials that are available online. The solutions proposed by the specialized literature concerned with the problem of plagiarism can be grouped into five categories: better trained students, more involved teachers, the use of anti-plagiarism software, clear anti-plagiarism policies, and ethical education of the youths. The SAP conversion procedure is a solution targeting increased involvement on behalf of teachers. Its partial application in the case of the disciplines included in the undergraduate educational program of Sociology conducted by the Transylvania University of Brasov, where students’ evaluation is based on essays, has considerably decreased the amount of student plagiarism.

Project-based learning and its contribution to avoid plagiarism of university students

Este estudio presenta los resultados de una investigación documental sobre los enfoques recientes de las causas y soluciones del plagio de los estudiantes universitarios. Contiene una clasificación de las causas de acuerdo con el nivel en el que ocurren. Además, según los resultados de una observación directa, el estudio muestra que en Rumania, donde se promueve el aprendizaje basado en proyectos, la costumbre de los estudiantes de usar fuentes basadas en internet de manera poco ética se desarrolla antes de la educación académica, con el requisito de que los alumnos elaboren proyectos escolares. Esto se propone como una causa adicional de plagio de estudiantes universitarios. El hábito de copiar y pegar materiales disponibles en línea es difícil de contrarrestar de manera eficiente, pero puede corregirse y dirigirse hacia la adquisición de nuevos conocimientos. El plagio ya no es eficiente para los estudiantes cuando se les pide explícitamente que hagan comentarios sobre materiales que ya están disponibles en línea.
